UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL N. DUNZACK, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
CHISEL FOR OPENING BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,848, dated June 26, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL N. DUNZAOK,
of Salem, in the county of Essex and State I of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved Box-Chisel for Opening Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal elevation; Fig. 3, a transverse section; Fig. 4, a longitudinal section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in a chisel B, with a slot I, and a notch R, cut in its thin end, to admit a nail as seen at Fig. 1. Chisel B, also has a groove O, out near its thin end, to admit a small oblique chisel T, Fig. 1. Chisel T, is operated in said groove O, by a fulcrum N, Fig. 3. Fulcrum N is secured between two thin oblong plates of iron or steel L, L, Fig. 3. Said plates vibrate freely on, and serve as a rest for chisel B, Fig. 1. Fulcrum N, passes through one end of plate L, which is placed on chisel B, Fig. 1, thence through a square hole A, which is in chisel B, Fig. 2, thence through the bottom plate L, which is under chisel B, Fig. 1, said fulcrum N, being retained in its place through chisel B, and the two plates L L, by two pins P, P, Fig. 3. At the other end of plates L, L, is placed a stop Z, Fig. 1, which is secured between the two plates L, L, by a bolt and nut M, Fig. 1. One object for placing stop Z, between plates L, L, is to keep the two plates L, L, at a uniform distance from each other, so that chisel B, may move freely from right to left between them. The other object is, if the box is made of a thin material, or the nail is driven too near the edge of the lid, so that when chisel B, is driven between the box and its lid, if notch B, Fig. l, strikes the nail before plates L L, strike the side of the box,
chisel B, cannot be driven any farther. Oon-.
sequently there will be a space between the edges of plates L L, and the side of the box, which will prevent chisel B, when its handle is turned toward the operators left hand, from acting on the nail for the want of a fulcrum, but by turning the longest part of stop Z, between the front edges of plates LL, and the side of the box, it fills said space, and serves as a fulcrum for chisel B, so that when the handle of chisel B, is turned toward the operators left hand, chisel T, is thrust forward and cuts the nail. The small hole E, near hole A, Fig. 2, is to admit pin F, which is secured in the back end of chisel T, Fig. 4, so that when chisel T, is thrust forward, the sharp edge of chisel T, will pass over notch R, and pin F, will strike against the forward part of small hole E, and prevent chisel T, from being I thrust forward by fulcrum N, beyond its prescribed limits so as to drop out.
The mode of operation is as follows: When chisel B, is driven between the box and its lid, slot I, follows the nail until notch R, in chisel B, strikes against the nail, and the steel plates L L, strike against the side of the box. Then by turning the handle of chisel B, toward the operators left hand, notch R, which is in chisel B, grasps the nail. At the same time the steel plates L L, or stop Z, remain stationary against the side of the box and fulcrum N, thrusts chisel T, forward and cuts the nail.
The common practice for opening boxes, is to drive a chisel between their lids, and sides, and then pry open their lids. By so doing, the lids of the boxes are split, and the edges of their sides injured, so as to render them unfit for as good a purpose afterward.
The object of this chisel is to enable persons to open boxes with great ease and rapidity, and to save their lids and sides, and
render them capable of being used over and DANIEL N. DUNZAOK.
