Definitions

  • This apparatus mounted on the chain carfying the cane to the extracting-mill, consists, first, of a large trough, A, of sheet metal, into which extends the upper part of the chain, which feeds the cane forward in proportionto the motionimparted to it; second, four inj ectors or nozzles, whereof two, B B, are'in the upper part of the trough, and two, 0 and G, on the sides; third, on thelower side of this trough there is a hole or pipe, D, which allows the condensed steam to be drawn off; fourth, at the inlet and at the outlet of the trough two 7 hinged traps or valves, E E, serving to retain the injected steam within the trough Operation of the apparatus: When the cane which is to be worked up is placed on the chain, and when this is set in motion, the injecting of steam, hot water, or hot air is started as soon as the cane begins to pass into the apparatus, and it continues as long as the chain works.

the following is a specification.
UNITED STATES PATENT CHARLES BLANDIN, OF LA POINTE-A-PITEE, GUADELOUPE, WEST INDIES.
' APPARATUS FOR COAGULATING THE ALBUMTNOUS MATTERS CONTAINED IN SUGAR-CANE;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,902, dated November 6, 1883.
Application filed April d, 1883. (1\'o model.) Patented in France June 17, N82, No. 150,442.
La Pointed-Fibre, Guadeloupe, one of the NVest Indies, have invented new and useful improvements in apparatus for coagulating the albuminous matters contained in sugarcane by means of steam, hot air, or hot water, (for which I have obtained a patent in France, No. 150,442, dated June 17, 1882,) of which In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is aside view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a crosssection upon line L M of Fig. 1. p
This apparatus, mounted on the chain carfying the cane to the extracting-mill, consists, first, of a large trough, A, of sheet metal, into which extends the upper part of the chain, which feeds the cane forward in proportionto the motionimparted to it; second, four inj ectors or nozzles, whereof two, B B, are'in the upper part of the trough, and two, 0 and G, on the sides; third, on thelower side of this trough there is a hole or pipe, D, which allows the condensed steam to be drawn off; fourth, at the inlet and at the outlet of the trough two 7 hinged traps or valves, E E, serving to retain the injected steam within the trough Operation of the apparatus: When the cane which is to be worked up is placed on the chain, and when this is set in motion, the injecting of steam, hot water, or hot air is started as soon as the cane begins to pass into the apparatus, and it continues as long as the chain works. The steam, hot air, or hot water so inj ected raises the cane to a temperature more than sufificiently high'for coagulating the albuminous matters contained in the sugarcane, and causes the latter to arrive at the mill at a sufficiently high temperature to prevent 'all fermentation after the extraction.
I claim-- In an apparatus for coagulating the albuminous matter in sugar-cane, the combination of a trough for holding sugar-cane with an endless chain for conveying said trough and pipes for supplying steam to said trougln substan tially as set forth.
