26 Claims. (Cl. 60-97) This invention relates to automatic machines, and more particularly to novel and improved means for controlling fluid operated machines. The invention is herein illustrated as applied to a fluid operated toe lasting machine of the type disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 2,663,036, issued December 22, 1953, on an application filed in my name. It will be understood, however, that in its broader aspects the invention is not limited to machines of that particular character or to the exact mechanical construction herein illustrated.
The machine disclosed in the aforementioned patent includes a plurality of fluid operated mechanisms, a plurality of valves for controlling the flow of fluid under pressure, respectively, to and from said mechanisms, a plurality of cams rotatable as a unit for operating said valves, fluid operated means for rotating said cams through a single turn to cause the machine to perform a complete operating cycle, and means for regulating the speed of rotation of the cams by said rotating means to determine the duration of the operating cycle. The fluid operated mechanisms which are controlled by the valves are adapted to actuate the operating elements of the toe lasting machine in a predetermined sequence, as is explained in detail in the mentioned patent. These operating elements include upper tensioning grippers, a toe former which is movable heightwise of a shoe to shape the upper about the toe end of its last, wipers for wiping the lasting margin of the upper inwardly over the toe end of an insole on the last, an upper trimming device operable to sever the innermost layers of a multi-ply upper, subsequently to the tensioning of the upper materials by the gripper, and a cement applying nozzle adapted to apply cement to the toe end of the insole prior to the operation of the Wipers and to function as a retarder when the outer layer of-the upper materials is wiped inwardly over the insole, the upper trimming device and the cement applying nozzle being carried by an arm which is swung to different angular positions and moved heightwise of the shoe by certain of the fluid operated mechanisms to bring these elements into operative relation to the toe end of the shoe.
In order to provide for two different operating cycles, i. e., one in which the tensioning grippers are operated to pull the upper materials both before and after the upper trimming operation and in which the toe former wipes the upper materials heightwise of the last both before and controls the upper pulling action of the grippers, two cams for the valve which controls the mechanism for effecting movements of the toe former lengthwise toward and away from the toe end of the shoe, and .two cams for operating ice the valve which controls the mechanism for efiecting movements of the toe former heightwise of the shoe, these six cams being mounted for axial shifting movement ase unit by the operator to different positions for'causing the machine to pertormone or the other of these two operating cycles. As is explained in the last mentioned pa'tent, when these cams are positioned to cause the grippers to pull the upper only once in the cycle, the jaws of the grip pers are still closed twice, the second closing of the grippers, however, occurring idly when the grippers, are in such positions that there is no upper between them-"1n additiomthe machine of Patent No. 2,663,036 isprovided with operator .controlled stop means for selectivelylimiting the extent of downward movement of the arm which carries the upper trimming device, and also the cement applying nozzle, thereby to prevent the. trimmingwdevice from operating on the shoe as, for example, Whenitbecomes necessary to operate a second time onthe toe end of a shoe which has been previously lasted and trimmed in the machine.
It will be apparent'from what has beensaid 'above,:that the machine disclosed in Patent No. 2,663,036xmayreadily be adapted for use in lasting open-toe shoes by :setting the stop means in position to eliminate the trimming operation and by suitably positioning the six axially shiftable cams to cause the grippers and toe former to operate only once during the operating cycle .of the machine. In this connection, it will be noted that inasmuch, as the upper materials of an open-toe shoe terminate short of the toe end of the last there is no need for the trimming operation, and a single operation of the grippers to tension the upper materials together with a single operation of the toe former to Wipe the upper materials heightwise around the toe end of the last is all that is required. However, when this prior machine is thus used to last open-toe shoes, a considerable portion of the time required for the completion of the operating cycle of the second type mentioned above is actually wasted, thus detracting materially from the over-all efliciency of the machine.
It is, accordingly, an object of this invention to provide novel and improved means for controlling the operation of a machine of the type here under consideration and for speeding up the operating cycle when certain operations, for example, the second upper tensioning and upper pulling operations and the trimmingoperation are eliminated. With this purpose in view, the herein illustrated machine, which has operating elements similar to those of the machine disclosed in Patent No. 2,663,036 and including a toe former, upper tensioning grippers, an upper trimming means, a device for applying adhesive to the toe end of the insole and which also serves as a retarder, and wipers for wiping the lasting margin of the upper materials inwardly over and for pressing the lasting margin against the bottom face of the insole, is provided with novel and improved mechanism for controlling the operation of these several elements. More particularly, thisimproved controlling mechanism, which comprises a plurality of valves for controlling the flow of fluid under pressure through operating cylinders associated with the various operating elements, a pluralityof cams which are rotatable as a unit for actuating these valves, means for rotating these cams to cause the machine to perform a complete operating cycle, and means for regulating the speed of rotation of said cams to determine the duration of the operating cycle, is provided with additional means associated with said cams and shiftable relatively "thereto for varying the action of certain of the cams on the control valves operated thereby, to cause the operating elements controlled by said valves to operate in a different manner during a modified operating cycle and for varying the action of thespeed regulating means to change the. duration of that cycle. ii
Thus, in the herein illustrated machine, there is associated with the plurality of rotatable cams two auxiliary cam members which are shiftable axially, relatively to i the rotatable cams, for modifying the action of the cam which operates the valve for controlling the flow of fluid I under pressure to and from the gripper closing cylinders and for modifying the action of the cam which operates the valve for controlling the flow of fluid under pressure -to-and from the cylinder which effects heightwise movement of the arm which carries the trimming device and the cement applying nozzle. These two auxiliary cams are connected together for movement in unison and are adapted to be shifted axially by means of an operator "-sc'ontrolled member, together with the six axially shiftable cams previously mentioned, with which this machine is --provided. When thus shifted axially, one of these auxiliary cam members which is located adjacent to the gripper closing cam, moves to an inoperative position so that the gripper closing valve is operated in a manner to omit the second closing of the gripper jaws, while the other auxiliary-cam member is moved to an operative position in :which it modifies the action of the valve for controlling the flow of fluid under pressure to the cylinder which efiects heightwise movement of the aforementioned arm -in such a manner that this arm is moved downwardly only once during the operating cycle. The last-mentioned auxiliary cam is also adapted when moved to its operative position to effect opening of a by-pass valve for increasing the speed of rotation of all of the cams by the fluid operated means in order to decrease the duration of the modified operating cycle. Preferably, and in the herein illustrated machine, the improved control means of this *invention also includes means for operating certain of the control valves independently of their operating cams in response to movement of the axially shiftable auxiliary cams by the operator controlled member. The control valves thus operated by this additional means include the 'valve which controls the flow of fluid under pressure to and from the cylinder which effects swinging of the arm,
and the valve which controls the flow of fluid under pressure to and from the cylinder which causes the trimming device to operate. Thus, when the operator controlled member is manipulated to shift the two auxiliary cams. into positions for omitting the second closing of the gripper jaws and for causing the arm which carries the trimming device and cement nozzle downwardly only once during the operating cycle, and to shift the six cams into positions in which the grippers and toe former are operated only once during the cycle, the arm is immediately swung into a position to locate the cement nozzle over the toe end of the shoe and the trimming device is operated idly. Also, the by-pass valve is opened at an appropriate time in the operating cycle to effect a reduction in the duration of the modified operating cycle in keeping with the lesser number of operations performed, thus greatly increasing the over-all efliciency of the machine.

Referring to the drawings, the toe lasting machine which is shown in Fig. l is similar to that disclosed and described in Patent No. 2,663,036 and includes lasting instrumentalities, not shown herein, which are exactly like those of the prior patented machine comprising upper tensioning grippers, a toe former, wipers, an upper trimming device, and a cement applying nozzle which also serves as a retarder'during the operation of the wipers. As in the prior machine, these operating elements, as well as a toe rest and a heel rest which are provided for holding the shoe in position during the lasting operation, are
V operated in predetermined time relation to each other in the course of a cycle of operations of the machine by means of fluid operated mechanisms. Likewise, in accordance with the disclosure of the aforementioned patent, the flow of fluid under pressure to and from these fluid operated mechanisms is controlled by a plurality of valves which are operated by a plurality of cams. These cams are keyed to a shaft 20, Figs. 2 and 3, which is arranged to be rotated through a complete turn, to cause the machine to perform a complete operating cycle, by fluid operated means which will be referred to below. The several control valves are of identical construction and ,two of these which appear in Fig. 3 are identified by reference characters 22 and 24. These valves control the flow of fluid under pressure from a manifold 26 to the several fluid pressure operated mechanisms by means of suitable pipes, two of which are shown in Fig. 3 and identified by reference characters 28 and 30. Associated with each of these valves is an operating lever, see 32, Fig. 3, and these operating levers are each in alinement with a control cam, these cams being positioned axially along the shaft 20 in accordance with the arrangement diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawings.
Included among the several cams on the shaft 20 is a cam 40 which operates the valve for controlling the flow of fluid under pressure to the fluid operated mechanism which rotates the shaft 20; a cam 42 for operating a valve which controls the flow of fluid under pressure to the mechanism which effects heightwise movements of an arm which carries the upper trimming device, indicated generally by the reference character 45 in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and also the cement applying nozzle, not shown herein; a cam 44 which operates a valve for closing oif the exhaust from the manifold 26 to cause a pump, not shown, which supplies fluid thereto to build up fluid pressure in the manifold; a cam 46 which operates a valve for controlling the flow of fluid to mechanism for opening and closing the jaws of the upper pulling grippers; a cam 48 which operates a valve for controlling the flow of fluid under pressure to the mechanism for operating the upper trimming device; and a cam 50 for operating a valve for controlling the mechanism which swings the aforementioned arm to different angular positions locating the upper trimming device 45 and the cement nozzle relatively to the toe end of the shoe being lasted. Except as modfiied in accordance with the present invention and as explained below, the cam 46 corresponds to the cam 282 of the machine disclosed in Patent No. 2,663,036.
Mounted for sliding movement of the left-hand end of the shaft 20, as viewed in Fig. 2, is a bank of six cams 52, 54; 56, 58; and 60, 62, these cams corresponding, respectively, to the cams 1250, 1252; 1254, 1256; and 1258, 1260 of the prior patented machine. This bank of cams r is provided with a hub portion63 having a peripheral spring-pressed plunger 82 which is adapted to project into one or the other of two locating holes to hold the arm, and hence the aforementioned bank'of cams, in one or the other of two positions, one of these. locating holes appearing in Fig. 2 and being identified by the reference character 84. When the arm 80 is in the lower position in which it is shown in Fig. 2, the toe lasting machine is adapted to perform an operating cycle in which the grippers and the toe former operate twice, once before the operation of the trimming device and once after such operation, generally in the same manner as is disclosed in detail in Patent No. 2,663,036. For the purposes of this invention, however, the following improvements have -'been made in the controlling mechanism. 7
Referring first to the cam 46, which as previously explained corresponds to the cam 282 of the prior machine,
this. cam is provided with two separate cam plates 90, 92,
Fig. 4, the former being secured directly to the cam 46 while the latter is rotatable with this cam but is mounted for axial movement relatively thereto in a manner about to be described. As will be understood by reference to Patent No. 2,663,036, the cam 282 of the machine disclosed therein is so constructed as to cause the gripper jaws, which are closed initially in response to the depression-of a control treadle, to open and release the upper, to close again and grip the upper a second time, and finally to open and release the upper, these actions being effected by means of a latch which cooperates with a valve operating lever. Thus, in the herein illustrated machine, when the axially movable cam plate 92, Figs. 2 and 4, is in the position shown in Fig. 2, a latch member 94,
-which is initially set to hold a valve operating lever 96,
Figs. 2 and 3, in the position to which it is moved by treadle mechanism similar to that of the prior patented machine and operated by-a control treadle 98 (Fig. 1), is
operated in the same manner as in the vprior machine to cause two operations of the gripper closing means. Further, in accordance with the disclosure of the prior patent, this same 'treadle mechanism actuates another valve control lever, not shown, and a latch 100 (Fig. 2) which is associated with the'cam 44, which, as already noted, controls the valve for causing fluid under pressure to be developed in the manifold 26, while .a subsequent depression of the treadle actuates a third valve lever, not shown, and a latch 102 which is associated with the cam 40 for controlling the flow of fluid under, pressure to the fluid operating means for rotating the shaft 20 and the cams whichare carried thereby. However, when the cam plate 92 is shifted axially to-the right, Fig. 2, away from the cam 46, the latch member 96 will be tripped only once during arevolution of the shaft 20 and cam 46 so that the grip- 'perjaws, previously closed .in response to the operation of thecontrol treadle 98, are opened to release the upper -'a central hub 118 which is keyed to the shaft .20. Se-
cured to the member 110 are two rods 120, 120 which pass through clearance holes in the cam 44, and mounted on theright-hand ends of theserods, .Fig. 4, .is'a cam member 122. This cam member, whichis provided with a central aperture 123 which fits over a-hub portion of the cam 42, has a peripheral cam surface 12'4"-which*is shaped to provide a lift portion 1'26 and a:=drop portion 128, Fig. 3. Pivotally-mounted on a bracket member associated with the manifold 26 is a lever 131havingan enlarged end 132 which is interposed between the cam surface 124 and the outer end-of'a plunger valve 134, when the-member 110 and the cam 122 are shifted to the right from the positions in which'they are shown vin'Figs. 'Z-and 4 of the drawings. This plunger is urged to the right, Fig. 3, by means of a compression 'sprin'g136 and to the extent permitted .by the engagement of the lower arm of the lever 131 with an abutment surface on the bracket 130.
The mechanism for rotating the shaft 20 :is the same as thatdi-sclosed in Patent No. 2,663,036 and :in'clu'desa cylinder in which'there is mounted a piston .142, 'a cylinder .144 in whichtthere is mounted another piston, not shown, these two pistons being connectedtogether by means ofa rackbar .146 which is operatively connected to "the shaft 20 in such a way that when thepiston 1421s .movedto the left, Fig. '3, by fluid under pressure admitted to-Lthe cylinder 140 through a'pipe 148'by means of a control valve associated with the manifold 26, the-shaft 20 is rotated in the direction of the arrow, Fig. '3. For reguilating the speed of rotation of the shaft 20 and thus deter- 'mining the duration of the operating cycle, the fluid under pressure whichis admitted to the cylinder 140 is also conducted, .by .means of a pipe 150, .to a plunger valve 152, Fig. 7, which is operated to cause fluid discharged from the cylinder 144, through a pipe .154, to'pass through a fthrottle valve .156, "as disclosed in Patent No. 2,663,036.
In order to increase the speed of rotation of theshaft 20, during a selected portion of the operating cycle of the .machine, there is connected to the pipe 154 a branch'pipe .160 which is in communication with an annular groove 161 provided in the interior of'a valvecasing '162 in which ttheaforementioned plunger valve 134 is'mounted. This plunger valve is of hollowconstruction and is provided with aseries of ports 164 which, when the plunger valve is moved to the left, .Fig. 3, connect the pipe with an exhaust pipe 166 thereby to by-pass some of the fluid exhausting from the cylinder 144 which otherwise would 21 to rotate at an increased speed for a portionof each revolution thereof as determined by the angular disposition of the lift portion 126 and the drop portion 128 of this cam member.
'The cam 42, which, as explained above, operates the valve for controlling the flow of fluid to and from the mechanism .for causing ,the arm carrying the upper trim- .ming device and the cementnozzle tomove in a heightwise direction, in accordance with the disclosure of Patent No. 2,663,036 has two cut-away portions on its periphery whichprovide two lifts 170, 172 and two drops-174, 176 (Fig. 6), the lift serving to open the control valve to cause the arm to descend,'the drop 174 permitting the valve to close so that the arm is elevated by a spring, 'the lift 172 serving to open the valve to cause the arm to descend a second time, and the drop 176 again closing the valve to permit the arm to be elevated by its spring. For the purposes of the present invention, the cam member 122 is-provided with two axially extending portions 180,182 which, when the shiftablemember 110 and the cam member 122 are moved to the right, Figs. 2 and 4, and to the left as viewed in Fig. 6, interfit within the cut-away portions of the cam 42, the portion 182 exactly filling the space between the drop 174 and the lift 172 while the portion 181) partially fills the space between the lift 170 and the drop 176.and provides a different lift 184, which .is advanced somewhat with respectto the lift 170. Thus the action of the cam 42-is modified to cause the aforementioned arm to move downwardly and upwardly only once during the operating cycle of the machine.
The member 110 is provided with an annular groove 190, Fig. 4, in which there is received a pin 192, mounted in the lower arm of a lever 194, Fig. 2. This lever is connected to the lower arm of the lever 68 by means of three interrelated links 196, 198 and 200 which are also connected to two bell-crack levers 202, 204, the lever 194 and these two'bell-crank levers being pivotally mounted on a bracket member 206. As will be apparent, these links and levers are so arranged that when the shiftable group of earns 52, 54, 56, 58, 60 and 62 is moved to the left as viewed in Fig. 2, by swinging the arm 80 to its upper position, thereby rendering the cams 54, 58 and 62 effective to control their associated valves in such a manner that the grippers pull the upper and the toe former wipes the upper heightwise around the toe end of the last only once during the operating cycle in the manner explained in Patent No. 2,663,036, the cam plate 92 is moved to the right away from the cam 46, so that the gripper jaws are opened only once during the cycle, the earn 122 is moved to the right so that its axially extending portions 180, 182 are effective to modify the action of the cam 42 in such a way that the arm which carries the upper trimming device and the cement nozzle is moved downwardly only once during the cycle, while the peripheral cam portion 124 of the cam 122 is so positioned as to open the by-pass valve 134 and thus cause the shaft to be rotated more rapidly during a predetermined angular portion of its single turn.
In addition to the means already described which are shiftable axially relatively to the control cam for causing certain of these cams to function differently during the operating cycle and for decreasing the duration of the provided with means for operating certain of the control valves of the machine independently of their respective operating cams. Connected respectively to the bellcrank levers 202 and 204 are two rods 206, 208 which extend downwardly through a guide member 210, Fig. 2.
The lower end of the rod 206 is in alinement with the outer end of the valve operating lever 32, see Fig. 3, which is adapted to be operated by the cam 50, while the lower end of the rod 208 is in alinement with another valve operating lever 212 which is adapted to be operated by the cam 48. As previously explained, the cam 48 is arranged to operate, through the lever 212, a valve for controlling the flow of fluid under pressure to the mechanism for operating the upper trimming device 45 and the cam 50 is arranged to operate, through the lever 32, the valve 24 which controls the flow of fluid under pressure to the mechanism which swings the arm carrying the trimming device and the cement nozzle. With the arrangement just described, it will be apparent that when the cams 52,
54, 56, 58, 60 and 62 are moved to the left and the cam member 92 and 122 are shifted to the right, Fig. 2, the
the toe end of the shoe and the upper trimming device will be operated idly prior to beginning of the operating cycle which is commenced by a second depression of the treadle Referring to Fig. 8, in this timing chart the double lines indicate when the particular control valve involved is open to admit fluid under pressure to its associated operating mechanism while the single line indicates when the valve involved is closed to cut off the flow of fluid 'under pressure and to permit the operating fluid to exhaust from the operating mechanism. Also, the initials cycle, the herein illustrated control mechanism is also C. T. refer to the operating cycle which is performed when the arm is in the lower position in which it. is shown in Fig. 2, while the initials O. T. refer to the modified operating cycle which is provided when the arm 80 is moved to an upper position wherein the pin 82 enters the hole 84. The first-mentioned cycle is substantially the same as that performed by the machine of Patent No. 2,663,036 and is especially adapted for operating the machine to last shoes having closed toes. The modified cycle in which certain of the functions of some of the operating elements are eliminated, is especially adapted to facilitate the operation of the machine when lasting shoes with open toes. This modified operating cycle is in some respects similar to the operating cycle which is performed by the machine of Patent No. 2,663,036 when the arm 1282 of that patented machine is moved to its upper position. In addition, however, the upper trimming device is operated idly and the arm which carries this device is swung over to a position for locating the cement nozzle over the shoe immediately in response to the initial depression of the control treadle 98. Also, the gripper jaws which are closed in response to the initial depression of the control treadle,
are opened only once during the operating cycle and the aforementioned arm is moved downwardly and upwardly only once during the cycle. In this modified operating cycle, it will be observed from Fig. 8 that the several operating elements of the machine are in effect idle for a substantial portion of the cycle, i. e., from approximately 47 to 250 of the angular movement of thefcam shaft 20. It istherefore possible to cause this shaft to rotate at an increased speed, duringthis particular portion of the cycle, and thereby substantially to decrease the duration of the cycle. This is efiected in the herein illustrated control mechanism by the action of the cam 122 on the by-pass valve 134 as is indicated on the chart of Fig. 8 in which the lowermost double line indicates the time when .this valve is moved to its open position.
