1 Claim. (Cl. -21) This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a sofa, and more particularly to such articles that may be converted from one type of furniture to another type.
One of the objects of this invention is the a sofa adapted to be converted to a bed.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a bed adapted to be converted to a sofa.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a sofa-bed provided with storage space for linens or such other suitable articles.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a sofa-bed whereby when the invention is not used as a bed it may be converted into a sofa so as to save space, and permit such furniture to be used in living rooms.
Other objects and features will more fully appear from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the invention in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective View of the front of the sofa illustrating a pair of guide rails in extended position;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sofa showing its upper portion of a seat cushion in extended position;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the invention in open position of a bed;
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1; i
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view similar to Fig. 5 and showing the invention in extended position for use as a bed;
Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 88 of Fig. 6, and
Fig. 9 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 9-9 of Fig. 6;
Referring more particularly to the invention the sofabed is represented by the numeral 1 and is provided with arms 2 and 3. Each arm and its structural embodiment is of similar construction and a description of the interior mechanical structure of one arm is thought sufficient for the proper evaluation and construction of the device.
Arms 2 and 3 are provided with tops 4 that are respectively secured to a back 5 which forms the rear portion of the sofa. Fronts 6 of the arms are secured to the top arm rests and to baseboards 7. Side panels 8 are respectively secured to arm top rests 4, back 5, fronts 6 and baseboards 7. Inside panels 9 are respectively fastened to arm tops 4, fronts 6 and baseboards 7. It is thought obvious from the foregoing that the arms form a rectangular box-like structure and are covered with suitable upholstering.
The fronts 6 have recesses 10 in their lower portions and have offsets forming slots to permit the ingress and egress of structural mechanisms more fully described hereinafter. Doors 11 are hinged to said fronts and register provision of with the recesses so as to hide or cover the aforesaid mechanical structure. The back 5 (Fig. 5) extends upwardly from arms 2 and 3 and has a lid or top 12 hinged thereto in pivotal fashion. End supports or panels 13 are respectively secured to tops 4 ofthe arms and back 5. A rear cushion or back rest 14 is mounted in pivotal fashion to supports 13 and is adapted to swing in arc-like fashion when lid or top 12 is in open position as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 6.
A brace 15 is secured to inner panels 9 of arms 2 and 3 and an angular partition 16 (Figs. 5 and 6) is secured to said brace and panels and is part of a compartment 17; which is formed by back 5, panels 9, top 12, cushion 14 and said angular partition. By the provision of this compartment sheets and bedding or any suitable articles may be stored therein.
A fabric 18 made of cloth, plastic or any suitable material has one of its ends secured to the basal portion of partition 16 and the other of its ends to the rear part of a cushion 19. The fabric extends across the insideof the back lower portion of the sofa and may be used to support pillows or other articles and also closes the space between the cushion and back of said sofa. A seat cushion 20 is adapted for disposition, in movable fashion, over cushion 19, and its utility and operation will be hereinafter more fully explained.
A pair of supports 21 (Fig. 2) are respectively provided with rollers 22 mounted in bearings in brackets 23 secured to the front portion of said supports. Rollers 24 are likewise secured in brackets 25, which extend below said rollers and above said supports so as to act as a guide; all of which is clearly illustrated in Fig. 9. Since each of the supports 21 are similar in structure only one has been illustrated.
Tracks 26 (Figs. 5, 6 and 9) are respectively secured to baseboards 7 and rollers 24 are adapted to ride thereon and be guided by the brackets 25 that extend over the sides of said tracks. As hereinbefore stated the lower portions 6 of the arms are narrower than their upper portions so as to permit supports 21 to be extended or stored. It is also to be again noted that brackets 25 extend upwardly beyond supports 21 and ride along the outer sides of a guide rail 26 (Figs. 5, 6 and 9) secured to back 5 and fronts 6 of the arms.
On the inner sides of supports 21 are respectively secured rails 27 (Fig. 2), and when the former are extended from the sofa, seat cushion 20 is adapted to rest thereon and be supported by such rails when it is pulled forward, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The seat 21) has a pair of rollers 28 (Figs. 3 and 6) mounted in legs 29 respectively on the basal portion of said seat.
The lowermost cushion 19 (Figs. 5, 7 and 8) has a pair of bearings 30 (Figs. 6 and 8) secured to its basal portion and into which are mounted angular rods 31. The rods 31 extend through rails 26 and have extended end portions respectively engaging ends of springs 32; the latter having their other ends secured to fronts 6 as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
To the front basal corner portions of cushion 19 (Fig. 7) (one of which is not shown as the structure is similar) a support .33 is secured thereto by a hinge 34 and the basal portion of said support is likewise secured to a beam 35 by a hinge 36; said beam spans the bottom portion of the sofa and its ends are respectively secured to baseboards 7. It is thought obvious that cushion 19 is raised and lowered upon arms 31 and support 33 when suitable force is applied.
A spring 37 has one of its ends secured to the support 33 and the other of its ends fastened to front 6. it is to be noted that when cushion 19 is elevated to the same plane as seat cushion 20 the fabric 18 being attached to its rear portion follows same and thereby provides a support and also a cover to prevent articles from dropping down into the basal portion of the sofa; such for instance as hairpins and other articles.
The device functions as follows: Of course, when it is desired to be used as a sofa Fig. 1 is a proper illustration. When the sofa is desired to be converted into a bed doors 11 are opened and supports 21 extended or pulled outwardly from the sofa. Their outward movement is stayed by stops 38 on each of the supports 21. The seat cushion is then slid outwardly from the sofa (Fig. 6) and its rear portion rests on rails 27 of the supports. The lower cushion 19 is then pulled forward and rods 31 and support 33 are elevated and cause it to be moved into the plane of cushion 20, and the latter is held against counterclockwise movement by springs 32 and 3'7.
Having described this invention what is claimed is:
-In a sofabed construction, comprising box-like constructions constituting hollow arms of the sofa, a plurality of cushions, one upright cushion and two horizontal cushions, said horizontal cushions being spaced one above the other when the constructoin is a sofa and arranged in a horizontal position in a common plane when said construction is a bed, means comprising angular rods constituting levers of the third class, each lever having two horizontal portions adapted to be journaled, respectively, in an upper bearing and a lower stationary bearing, said upper bearing being on the bottom of the lower cushion and the lower bearing being adjacent the bottom of the construction, each lever having an upright arm terminating in an eyelet, whereby it is connected to means comprising a tension spring having its other end connected to the forward portion or wall of the box-like construction, in combination with a link, hinged at one end to the bottom of the lower cushion and its other end hinged adjacent the bottom of the box-like construction, said link and the long arm of the lever being the same length, whereby said lower cushion can be moved in a rising but constantly horizontal condition, the intermediate portion of said link having a tension spring connected thereto whereas the other end of said spring is connected to the front of said box-like construction, said springs aid in elevating the lower cushion and maintaining it in a proper horizontal condition.
