Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE.
CHARLES F. BAXTER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
FUR/NACE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 248,730, dated June 19, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHS. F. BAXTER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam and Hot-Air Furnaces, Combining the Uses and Advantages of Both a Steam-Furnace and Hot-Air Furnace in One; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
In Figure l, A, represents a double cylinder steam generating and gas burning firepot, to line stove, range, or furnace. Its form may be round, oval or otherwise, to correspond to its use. B, is the inlet water pipe. C, is the water level, and allows a few inches for a steam chamber. D, is a pipe to convey steam for cooking; and to radiators, for warming rooms, &c. E, E, are two pipes passing through the fire-pot and base, to admit air to consume the gases generated in fire chamber F.
Fig. 2, is a vertical section of fire-pot A, with corresponding letters.
Fig. 3, represents a steam generating and hot-air furnace, incased with brick, or portable, in the usual hot-air chamber H, and radiating its hot air, by flues I, to adjacent rooms. The cold air is admitted to chamber H, through openings at the bottom thereof. G, is. an oven,` for baking and roasting. A, is the double cylinder steam generating fire-pot, lining the cylinder J,
.well known-separately.
and inclosing the fire F. E, E, are two 'pipes admitting fresh warm air through the fire-pot and base, to consume the gases generated by the fire F. B, is the inlet water pipe. C, is the Water level. D, the steam pipe, to convey steam to radiators to Warm rooms, not accessible to hot-air flues, and also to convey steam to other vessels for culinary purposes.
I do not claim a double cylinder fire-pot or water jacket; a steam furnace; or hot-air furnace -they are all in use, and
I disclaim all, eX- cept the combination.
I claiml. The combination of a double cylinder steam generating lire-pot with pipes E, E, substantially as described, and for the pur poses set forth.
2. The arrangement of the steam generat ing fire pot E, to stand apart from but within the inner wall J of the hot air chamber H, so that the exterior surface of the fire pot will be constantly surrounded by the hot products of combustion, as shown.
3. The arrangement of the oven G, directly above the fire pot E, but within the inner wall J, of the hot air chamber H, as herein shown.
CHS. F. BAXTER. lVitnesses IVM. T. KIREY, ISAAC W. MANHANT.
