Description

REINFORCED ROLLING MILL ROLLS Filed Aug. 31, 1956 IN V EN TOR.
United States Patent REINFORCED RULLING MllLlL ROLLS Harry M. Malaehowski, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Application August 31, 1956, Serial No. 607,377
1 Claim. (Cl. 80-58) This invention relates to rolling mill rolls and particularly to reinforced rolls.
Rolling mill rolls are generally cast from iron or steel in a mold to form a unitary roll of the general shape desired. This cast roll is then machined to final form. These rolls are subject to breaking by reason of flaws and segregation by impurities in the core of the casting as well as from brittleness and the like other causes.
It is an object of this invention to provide a reinforced cast roll which is free of central flaws and impurity segregation in the core.
Another object of this invention is to provide a roll having a central axial reinforcing member surrounded by spaced generally parallel axially extending auxiliary reinforcing members.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a roll having a central axial reinforcing structure made up of a solid cylindrical central member with spaced solid cylindrical satellite members fixed thereto and in contact therewith.
Other objects, advantages and purposes of this invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following description and the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a roll according to this invention partially cut away.
Figure 2 is a section on the line IIIl of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the reinforcing structure according to the invention.
Figure 4 is an end view of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of a holding disc according to this invention.
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated a roll having an axial forged or cold rolled steel rod 11 extending from the outermost ends of the roll necks 12. A plurality of forged or cold rolled steel rods 13 are spaced about the central rod 11 in spaced holding devices or discs 14 which regulate the spacing of the rods 13 and maintain them in contact with the central rod 11.
The roll 10 is formed by casting molten metal in the usual manner about the assembly shown in Figures 3 and 4. The central rod 11 has welded thereto the holding discs 14. The spaced rods 13 are held in the holding discs 14 by welding thereto. The rods 13 are shorter than the body of the roll while the central rod 11 is of sutficient length to extend over the entire roll length including the roll necks.
This roll structure eliminates the piping, segregation, blow holes and the like from the axis of the roll and furnish a worked axial structure in a cast matrix which gives the roll surprising resilience, strength and 'long life.
While .a preferred embodiment of this invention has been illustrated and described in the application it will be understood that the invention may be otherwise embodied Within the scope of the following claim.
I claim:
In a metal roll' construction of the character shown and described for heavy duty rolling mill utilizations, a reinforcing central axial structure comprising a full length worked steel rod core member of solid construction, a longitudinally spaced-apart pair of metal holding discs, each of said discs having a large central hole portion therethrough and a series of peripherally spacedapart relatively smaller hole portions open on their inner peripheries to said central portion and aligned within a bounding outer peripheral edge Wall of the discs, said core member extending through the central hole portion of said discs, said discs being Weld-secured concentrically about and at spaced locations from opposite longitudinal ends of said core member, a plurality of shorter length worked steel rod satellite members of solid metal of reduced diameter with respect to said core member and extending in a peripherally spaced-relationship in abutment with and along a central length portion of said coremember and through the smaller hole portions of said discs within the bounding peripheral edge wall of said discs, and said satellite rod members being weldsecured to said discs to provide the axial structure with an integral construction; a cast ferrous metal matrix roll body having a central roll face portion surrounding said axial structure and fully enclosing said discs and said shorter length satellite members, said central r=oll face portion having a greater total thickness across its diameter than the thickness of said axial structure across its diameter from said satellite rod members, and said roll body having end necks connected to and of smaller diameter than said central face portion and only surrounding end portions of said rod core member.
