Description

Jan. 27; .1959- J. s. ROSENTHAL wmmc APPAREL Filed march 4, 195 s VIIIIIIIIIIIA VIIIII'IIIII INVENTOR dosspx/ 5. ficsENT/ML J ATTORNEYS.
United WEARING APPAREL Joseph S. Rosenthal, New York, N. Y., assignor to Cisco, Inc., a corporation of New York This invention relates to the art of wearing apparel and more particularly to a combined muffler and vest-like member.
It is among the objects of the invention to provide an article of wearing apparel that may readily be manufactured from any suitable cloth, that will provide the utility of a conventional mufiler without likelihood of slippage when worn and will also simulate the appearance and provide the utility of a conventional cardigan, yet may be donned by the wearer without need for removing his coat or jacket, covering a substantial portion of the chest of the wearer as shown in Fig. 1.
According to the invention, these objects are accomplished in the manner hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings in which is shown one or more of various possible embodiments of the several features of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a view illustrating the article as worn,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the article,
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3 of another embodiment of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings, the article comprises an elongated rectangular strip of fabric 11 such as is commonly used in scarves or mufilers and preferably of wool of synthetic fibre such as Orlon" or the like.
The strip 11 is of length such that When placed around the neck of the wearer, as shown in Fig. 1, the lower ends 12 thereof will reach to approximately the waist and the depending portions thereof will form two panels 13, 14 which may lie respectively on each side of the wearers chest.
The adjacent inner edges 15, 16 of the panels 13, 14 are illustratively provided with complementary fastening means, preferably button holes 17 and buttons 18, which when engaged will retain the edges 15, 16 together and the panels 13, 14 adjacent their lower ends 12 are desirably provided with pockets 19.
If desired, button holes and buttons may extend substantially the length of the inner edges 15, 16 of the panels to reach the neck of the wearer.
tates Patent According to another embodiment of the invention, the adjacent inner edges 15, 16 of the panels 13 and 14 may be permanently joined as at 20 (Fig. 4) and buttons 18' may be sewed along the length of such connected portion.
The article, above described, when worn beneath a jacket or coat will allord the wearer all the benefits of a conventional scarf or mufiler, yet by reason of the connected lower portions of the panels 13, 14 will be retained in fixed position around the neck of the wearer without slippage. In addition, the article has the attractive appearance of a cardigan or vest-like member and also its utility, in that it provides pockets for small articles such as cigarettes, keys or the like. As the article is devoid of aback portion, it may readily be donned by merely placing the neck portion over the head of the wearer and as readily removed, all without removal of the coat or jacket.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter con tained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
As an article of manufacture, a combined mufller and vest-like member comprising an elongated rectangular strip of fabric of the same width throughout its entire length and devoid of discontinuities along its parallel longitudinal edges, adapted to be positioned around the neck of a wearer to define two panels depending from the neck portion of the strip and adapted to lie on the chest of the wearer on each side thereof and of combined width to cover a substantial portion of the chest of the wearer, said panels being of length substantially to reach the waist of the wearer, a plurality of complementary button holes and buttons along each of the adjacent inner edges of said panels near the lower ends thereof, said complementary buttons and button holes coacting releasably to join the adjacent inner edges of the panels together with said edges overlapping, each of said panels having a pocket adjacent the lower end thereof.
