NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GIBBONS, or WEST TROY, NEwYoRK, AssieN'on TO THE UNION 3 HARDWARE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, or sAMR PLACE.
HALTER-LOOP FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,808, dated October 16, 1883.
Application filed May 2, 1883. (No model.)
In all whom it may concern:
, cass of fasteners, which will be subsequently detailed herein, having for their object to simplify and better adapt such devices for the use designed. 2
Accompanying this specification, and forming a part of it, are two plates of drawings, containing four figures, illustrating my invention, in all of which the same designation of parts by letter-reference is used.
Figure 1 shows a halter in perspective, with the clasp on the loop-end of the rope connected with the eye of my improved fastener to form the lead-loop, with the loop-fastener in part detached from the rope to illustrate its interior construction. Fig. 2 exhibits in perspective the same parts of a halter that are shown in Fig. 1, with the fastener secured to the rope and with the end claspdisconnected from the eye on the fastener. spective one side of the eye and combined fastener; shown as detached from the rope. Fig. 4 exhibits another perspective of the eye and combined fastener removed from its attachment, and with the side that is opposite to that shown in Fig. 3 as facing the view in this illustration. The several parts of the device containing my invention and those of the halter with which the former connects are designated by letter-reference and their function explained as follows:
The letter A indicates the head or nose strap connecting with the lead-loop B at a a, and R the halter end of the rope, and R the tether end of it.
The letter C designates the clasp on the hal-. ter end of the rope R, and E the eye on the Fig. 3 illustrates in per- I fastener, with which the clasp connects to produce the lead-loop B.
My invention relates entirely to the device on which and with which the eye E adjustably connects to the rope, and this is constructed of the half-cylinder D, which, at one end, 6, is drawn down and flattened in form to produce the ring or eye E, constructed with the opening 0 in its semi-cylindrical surface at one end to receive the rope, and at its opposite end with the passage opening 0", there be ing intermediately placed on its inner concave surface the projecting spur S. \Vith the fastener and combined eye thus constructed the tether end of the rope is entered through the opening 0, as shown at Fig. 1, and then passed under thehook H through the passage-opening O, and that part of the rope between the open ings forced down into the semi-cylinder part D and onto the spur S,where it is firmly held with the parts appearing as shown in Fig. 2. 'When it is desired to increase or diminish the size of the lead loop, the rope is passed from under the strap-hook H and pulled from off the spur S, and with the parts in the position shown at Fig. 1, when the fastener and combined ring may be moved along. on the rope through the opening O to any desired length, and the device se cured as before described.
Among the advantages arising from the use of my construction of ring and combined fastener is that when applied and secured to the rope the attachment to the latter is made on a line nearly parallel with it and without off set projection therefrom, and the convenience with which the fastener can be attached and detached for adjustment.
I am well aware that two attached rings having a fixed connection at their edge and a side offset-eye for the clasp, with aspur between the rings, has been used for the same purpose 5 and I am also aware that three fixed'rings and a terminal eye for the clasp engagementhave also been applied for the same uses, my improvement on these older devices consisting in the application of a grooved-out or semi-cy1indrical passage for the rope between its ingress and egress passage into and from the device, with a spur located on its concave interior, and the the opening 0, the passage 0" for the rope,
and the spur S, constructed on the inner con- I 5 cave face of said semi-cylinder, as and for the purposes herein described and set forth.
Signed at the city of Troy this 30th day of April, 1883, and in the presence of the two Witnesses.
JOHN GIBBONS.
