(Cl. 340-367) This invention is related to protective covers associated with television picture tubes and, more particularly, to an improved protective cover which will be easy to fabricate and inexpensive to manufacture for enclosing and thereby protecting the neck of a television picture tube.

In the past there have been developed many types of protective covers suitable for employment as protective devices for the neck of television picture tubes. The molded plastic variety of protective cover, while offering a high degree of protection owing to its rigidity, nevertheless has disadvantages in cost of manufacture, weight and the ability to print instructions thereon.

Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide a new and useful protective cover to accommodate and thereby protect the neck of a television picture tube, the protective cover being inexpensive to fabricate and manufacture and also being adapted to accommodate printed instructions or information on the exterior thereof as produced by inexpensive printing techniques.

According to the present invention, a sheet of pliable material adaptable for scoring, such as cardboard, is cut and scored while flat so as to provide a cup-shaped cover with mounting tabs upon bending along at least a portion of the scorings. The periphery of the circular aperture normally provided in the back of a conventional television cabinet retains the formed, scoredcover in its intended configuration. The mounting tabs may be stapled to the television cabinet back as desired.

The features of the present invention which are believed to be novel are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The present invention, both as to its organization and manner of operation, together with further objects and advantages thereof, may best be understood by reference to the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a flat pattern lay-out of a protective cover 1 for the neck of a television picture tube, according to the present invention.

Figure 2 is a front perspective view of the protective cover according to this invention when such cover is disposed within the aperture of the back of a conventional television receiver cabinet.

In Figure 1, sheet is made of a cardboard or other suitable material, has a generally circular configuration, and is provided with a central, circular access aperture 11 and a plurality of triangularly shaped relief apertures 12. Sheet 10 is also provided with a plurality of peripheral mounting tabs 13. Dotted lines 14' define cut scored boundaries between tabs 13 and polygonal areas 15. cates "that the cut score is opposite to that of the observer. Solid lines 18, defining the boundaries of the triangular areas 17 and the adjacent polygonal areas 15, signify cut scores on sheet 10 on the same side as the observer.

16 and 18 provide for the folding over of one polygonal area 15, partially, upon another polygonal area 15 with the central triangular areas 17 sandwiched therebetween. Triangular relief apertures 12 may be conveniently included in the design of the protective cover so as to eliminate excess cardboard material near the vertices of triangular areas 17 so as to accommodate the folding of sheet 10.

Figure 2 depicts the protective cover 200, formed as a result of the successive foldings of sheet 10 at the several boundaries, as mounted in the back 201 of a conventional television receiver cabinet to surround and thereby offer protection to the neck of a television picture tube (not shown). Central access aperture 202 (identical with circular access aperture 11 in Figure 1) is provided to accommodate service adjustment of the deflection yokes, etc. The several sides 203 of completed cover 200 may accommodate written instructions to the service man, these instructions being press-printed upon sheet 10 of Figure 1 while in its fiat pattern configuration. Mounting tabs 204 (identical with tabs 13 of Figure 1) may be stapled to television cabinet back 201, as shown by the inclusion of staple 205 in Figure 2.

It is interesting to note that no glue or other securing means is necessary to retain the cover in its formed configuration, since this configuration is obtained by the insertion of cover 200 within the cathode ray tube aperture normally provided in television cabinet back 201.

In addition to the readily apparent ease of manufacturing the protective cover for television picture tubes of the present invention the material employed is also comparatively inexpensive.

While particular embodiments of the present invention have been shown and described, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that changes and modifications may be made without departing from this invention in its broader aspects, and, therefore, the aim in the appended claims is to cover all such changes and modifications as fall within the true spirit and scope of this invention.

I claim:

1. A protective cover adapted to house the neck of a television picture tube extending rearwardly through a rear cover of a television receiver cabinet comprising a sheet of pliable material having first and second sides, said sheet exhibiting a generally circular configuration and provided with a central portion, a plurality of side portions, a plurality of foldable, substantially triangular portions interposed between adjacent side portions, and a plurality of peripheral mounting tab portions bendable in an outwardly direction, said sheet being crease scored upon said first side to define boundaries between said triangular portions and said side portions adjacently disposed thereto in a clockwise direction, said sheet being'crease scored on said second side to define boundaries between said triangu' lar portions and said side portions adjacently disposed thereto in a counter-clockwise direction, said second side of said sheet also being crease scored to define boundaries between said side portions and said central portion; and said sheet being adapted for forming into a cup-shaped cover with said triangular portions being foldably interleaved between adjacent side portions, and said mounting tabs made on sheet 10 on thetside 3 a n being" adapted to be secured to said rear cover of said cabinet;

2. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which said central portion of said pliable sheet is provided with a central aperture.

3. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which relief apertures are provided in the region of intersections of said triangular portions, said side portions, and said central portion.
