Description

Dec. 2, 1958 I J. c. SOBESKY 2,862,318
LABEL HOLDER Filed April 15, 1956 United States Patent LABEL HOLDER John C. Sobesky, Detroit, Mich., assignor to Office Products, Inc., Detroit, Mich., a corporation of Michigan Application April 13, 1956, Serial No. 578,011
1 Claim. (CI. 40-11) This invention relates to label holders for books and the like, and particularly to a label holder made of transparent material attached to arms which support the holder on the back of a book.
The present label holder is similar to that illustrated, described and claimed in the patent to W. Galeone, No. 2,539,069 issued January 23, 1951, and assigned to the assignee of the present invention. In the patented holder, a sheet of metal was employed having the central portion removed to form a window opening, with the side edges reversely bent over the material at the edges of the opening to form attachment means for the supporting arms which secure the label holder to the book. The metal member was arcuately formed laterally to conform to the arcuate shape of the rear face of the book.
The holder of the present invention embodies a sheet of transparent or translucent thin resin material which has the side edges bent back upon the central body portion providing partially cylindrical edges of predetermined radius which receive a leg of a pair of U-shaped supporting elements. The edges of the reversely bent flanges are in engagement with the back surface of the main body portion of the sheet material to hold a label against the back face of the holder.
Accordingly, the main objects of the invention are: to provide a label holder made from thin transparent sheet material supported on a pair of U-shaped wire elements by which the label holder is attached to the back of a book; to flange the side portions of a thin transparent sheet material inwardly about a predetermined radius, with the ends in contact with the rear face of the sheet and with one leg of a pair of U-shaped elements within the corners formed by the flanges; to provide a label holder made from a sheet of material which may be tinted different colors so that the books of aset may be identified by the color of the holder, and, in general, to provide a label holder which is simple in construction and economical of manufacture.
Other objects and features of novelty of the invention will be specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of the invention, to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of the label holder embodying features of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is areduced sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1, taken on the line 22 thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the label holder illustrated in Fig. 2, taken on the line 33 thereof.
Referring to the figures, a label holder 30 is illus trated having a transparent formed or extruded body member 31 which is arcuately shaped laterally across the member. The side edges 32 are formed as part of a cylinder, with an inwardly projecting flange 33 which preferably engages the rear face of the arcuate portion of the body member. The side edges'32 of cylindrical shape provide a pin receiving portion 34 in which one leg 35 of a hairpin-shaped supporting element 36 is secured. The leg 35 when unsecured is of arcuate shape to normally assume a position as illustrated in dot and dash line 37. When the leg is inserted into the pin receiving portion 34, a binding of the leg 35 within the pin receiving portion occurs which secures the hairpinlike elements at each side of the body member 31. The leg 38 of the hairpinlike member 36 is also bent at 39 to have the lower portion extend outwardly to permit the leg to be radially inserted over the back binding portion of a book. The body member 31 when continuously extruded is cut off to desired lengths, and while transparent, may be tinted to provide color thereto either in the material before extrusion or a dye may be applied after the extrusion operation to provide color to the resulting card holder.
The label is retained in the holder by the inwardly directed flanges, having edges which abut the faces of the body portion which is supported by the separate hairpinlike elements. After the label has been placed in position, the arms 14 are moved downwardly over the back of the book, preferably between the leaves and covers to retain the label holder on the back thereof. As pointed out above, the material of the material of member 31 may be tinted a desired color so that books of different sets may be recognized by the color of the label holders.
What is claimed is:
A label holder having a body portion made of transparent material and sides edges reversely bent to form substantially cylindrical shaped pin receiving portions, flanges extending toward each other from the bent side edges in engagement with the rear face of the body portion toward the center part thereof, and a pair of hairpin-shaped elements having two legs each of which is bent intermediate its ends to provide a holding force to one of the legs when inserted within one of the pin receiving portions and a holding force to the other leg in relation to the outer surface of the side edge.
