SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,211, dated October 9, 18 83.

Be it known that I, ALFRED L. lVLlCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gant'on, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reservoirs for BurningFluids; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in reservoirs for holding and supplying oil, gasoline, or other burningfluids to street-lamps, vapor-stoves, and other devices of a similar character, the object of the present invention being to'provide such a reservoir as will be simple in its construction, inexpensive in its manufacture, capable of being readily employed in connection with any of the devices above enumerated, and which, when emptied of the oil or fluid, may be easily removed and a filled one substituted, thereby saving time and obviating the danger of explosions incidental to the careless filling of the reservoirs while in place upon 3 5 the stove or lamp with the flame still in ignition; also, by the construction hereinafter described, the fluid has no means of escape until the reservoir is placed in its proper position for use, the fluid being also prevented 40 from evaporation and from water or other impurities entering therein when said reservoir is exposed to weather or used in a dusty place, and the flow of the oil or fluid to the burner being free and uninterrupted, a clear and steady flame is thus insured.
The invention therefore consists in forming a portable reservoir in such a manner as to fit and rest upon a stationary tank adapted to be secured to the service-pipe of the lamp, stove, or other similar device, said reservoir being provided with suitable feed and air pipes, having a valve or stopper kept in its closed position by a spring or other like fastening, said feed and air pipes being preferably removable from the reservoir, substan- 5 5 tially as shown in the accompanying drawings, and hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A represents the reservoir, preferably of a cylindrical form, having-its bottom a set in a sufficient distance to pro- 610 vide a flange or rim which fits over and around the annularportion b of a tank, B, adapted to be permanently secured to the service-pipe Oof a lamp, stove, or other similar device, said tank being preferably funnelshaped, and is provided with a top or cover, D, having an opening, 0, to admit the entrance of the screwcapped portion d of the reservoir-bottom a when said reservoir is placed in position for use.
To the screw-cap E is suitably connected an air-pipe, F, extending up inside to nearly the top of the reservoir, and projecting outwardly from said cap a short distance, as shown at ca Adjoining this air-pipe F is the feed-pipe G, 7 5' which terminates at the screw-cap, as shown in Fig. 1. Secured to these pipes F G is a hinged valve, H, which prevents the oil or fluid from splashing out when the reservoir is being carried from one place to another, a suitable spring, f,or other like fastening, keeping said valve in its closed position.-
To fill the reservoir, the screw-cap E is removed and the oil or fluid poured in through the opening which it covers. After filling, the cap is replaced and the pipes F G closed by the valve H, and, if necessary to transport the reservoir, the same is carried top downward, said top being made flat in order to give it a firm rest when laid down in its reversed posi- 0 tion.
WVhen the reservoir is to be placed in position for use, the valve is opened and said reservoir inverted and placed upon the tank B, which is permanently attached to the service pipe 0 of the lamp or stove. The oil or fluid now feeds down through the pipe G into the tank B, air being admitted to the reservoir through the pipe F until said oil or fluid rises and covers the ends of both pipes, thus pre 10o venting the further admission of air, and thereby stops the oil or fluid from feeding faster than it is consumed by the burner, the top or cover D of .the tank preventing the vapor from escaping, the opening in said top being only large enough to admit the screw, capped portion d of the reservoirs bottom, and said portion tapering in order to secure a tight joint. WVhen the oil or fluid is exhausted, the reservoir may be readily removed from the 'stati onary tank and a filled one substituted. It will be seen by the above description that I a reservoir applicable to devices enumerated is provided that is self-sealing, self-regulat ing, and which, when filled, may be carried or transported from place to place without dangerol its contents leaking or spilling; also,
when in use, its several parts cannot become clogged by dust or dirt, and, owing to its construction, water is prevented from entering or evaporationtaking place, this being of great advantage when the device is employed in conneetion with street or other lam-p exposed to theweather, thereby lessening the danger of explosions by ignition of escaping vapor or, careless refilling of the reservoir while the flame may be burning, it being impossible to fill said reservoir without removing it 'from the stationary tank. a
Havingnow fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination,withthe reservoirherein described, having its bottom set in to 'form a flange, and provided with an openingadapt ed to receive a screwcap ,havi'n g secured there to or formed therewith suitable air and feed pipes, of a funnel-shaped tank having its upper portion of an annular form, and provided with atop or cover having, anopening to admit the screw-capped portion of the reservoir, said tank being capable of permanent connection with the service-pipe of a lamp, stove, or other similar device, substantially as specified.
