UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VOLOO'llT A. HULL, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y., AND ROBERT rllOADLE'Y, OF.AN-
SONIA, OONNEOTIIGUT, SA ll) HOADLEY ASSIGNOR TO THE AN SONIA BRASS AND COPPER COMPANY, OF ANSONIA, CONN.
ORNAMENT FOR SHADES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,135, dated October 2, 1883.
Application filed July 16, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, lVoLco'rr A. IIULL, of New York, in the county and State of New York, and ROBERT HoADLnY, of Ansonia, in
the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ornaments for Shades, of which the following is a specification.
, This improvement relates to ornamental rings or bands, such as are sometimes used to ornament shades which are used on illuminating apparatus.
'llheimprovement consists in a ring or band having above the lower edge an inwardly-ex- ,15 tending flange adapted to surround and fit upon the lower part of a shade, and provided with adjustable clasps which are capable of being extended under the lower edge ofihe shade.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ring or band embodying our improvement; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of a lamp-shade and a ring or band embodying the improvement and applied to the shade.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
A designates a shade, whieh may be made of porcelain, opal glass, or other suitable material, and which is shown as of conical form.
The shade may be made of conoidal form, of parabolic form, or of any other desirable shape. v
D designates a ring or band which, prefer- 3 5 ably, will be made of brass or other ornamental metal, and will be cut, embossed, or otherwise shaped, so as to have a tasteful and attractive appearance. Above the lower edge, and as here shown at the upper edge, this ring or band is 4.0 provided with an imvardly-extendi ng flange, a.
This ring or band is intended to be applied to the outside of a shade, as shown i11 1 ig. 2,with the flange a fitting against the exterior of the shade and the vertical portion surrounding the lower edge of the shade. Extending from. 4 5 the ring or band are clasps G,whieh may be of any suitable kind, whieh are adjustable, so that they can be caused to protrude under or can be removed beyond the lower edge of the shade, but which, as here shown, consist of pieces of flexible metal fastened by rivets or otherwise to the ring or band and adapted to be bent under the lower edge of the shade; The ring or band is slipped over the shade, and its flange a will rest upon the shade. The 5 5 clasps are then bent under the lower edge of the shade and will seen re the ring or band in place. This ring or band is simple and cheap and it may be made highly ornamental.
\Vhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A ring or band having above the lower edge an inwardly-extending flange adapted to surround and fit upon the lower part of a shade, and provided with adjustable clasps which are capable of being extended under the lower edge of the shade, substantially as specified.
2. A ring or band having above the lower edge an inwardly-extendi11g flange adapted to surround and fit'upon the lower part of a shade, and provided with clasps of flexible material which are capable of being extended under the lower edge of the shade, substantially as specified.
