n lylnunnwllnmir support the removable barrel-tray 11.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. CHAPMAN, OF THERESA, NEIV YORK.
OIL-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,967, dated October 2, 1883. Application filed August 24, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Theresa, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Safes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective outside view of my improved oil-safe, showing the side doors open. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the safe. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through the same on line 00 a, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the removable barrel-tray with its removable barrel-support.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to safes for the safe keeping of coal-oil, naphtha, or other liquids which for any reason it is desirable to keep under cover and protected, for the double purpose of preventing danger and avoid ing leakage, and it consists in the improved construction of an oil-safe adapted to contain a barrel, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
I11 the accompanying drawings, A is a box or casing, of rectangular shape and any suitable size, having side doors, B, an end door. 0, and a top door, D, which in the drawings I have represented as open in dotted lines. 011 opposite sides of the box or casing A, 011 the inside and some distance above the bottom, are fixed the parallel side sills, E E, which Inserted into the tray and resting upon its bottom is the barrel-support, which consists of end pieces, G G, of such a length as to bridge the casing and rest with their ends upon the side sills, E E, thus relieving the body of the tray, which is made of sheet metal, from strain. These end pieces are recessed midway, as shown at H, to fit the bilge of the barrel, and are conneeted by a bent rod, I. The tray is provided with awaste-pipe, J closed by a plug or other suitable stopper, K, for drawing off any liquid which may leak through the barrel into the tray.
In the bottom of the casing, below the side has been rolled into the safe it will of itself 6 drop into position in its support G I G upon the tray, after which a faucet is inserted into the head of the barrel, through which the oil or other liquid may be drawn off by opening the door 0.
In order to facilitate moving of the safe from one place to another, I provide the case with rollers or casters N, journaled in bent levers O, the fulcrums of which are on bolts 1 fastened in the sides or ends of the case, into which the inner ends of the levers project, bearing with their under side against the cam Q. If it is desired to move the apparatus, this cam is raised by a suitably-constructed handle projecting outside of the casing, so asto raise the inner ends of levers 0, bearing againstit, into a horizontal position, which will cause the castersto project below the bottom of the case, so that it may readily be rolled from one place to another. After *it has been placed in its desired position or location, cam Q is again. turned to release the levers, after which the inner ends of the levers will drop down, and thus enable the casing to rest bodily upon the floor, so that it cannot be easily shoved or pushed out of the way by accident.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In an oil-safe, the combination of the casing A, having doors B G D, and side sills, E E, removable tray F, supported upon the sills, and having waste-pipe J and removable barre1-su )port G I G, resting in the tray up on the side sills, E E, and adapted to hold the tray firmly in position upon the same, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the casing A, bent levers O 0, having rollers N N,fulcru1n-bolts I P, and cam Q, constructed and combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\Vitnesses: WILLIAM l). CHAPMAN.
L. O. HUNGERFORD, DORMAN WALRADT.
