Application October 17, 1956, S erial'No. 616,412 4 Claims. c1. 42-1 The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in locks for firearms and has for its primary object to provide, ina manner as hereinafter set forth, novel key controlled means for enclosing the trigger and l its guard for preventing unauthorized use of the gun and unintentional or accidental operation of said trigger.

Another very important object of the invention is to provide a firearm lock or guard of the character described comprising novel adjustable attaching means whereby the device may be readily mounted for use on various convendescribed and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

The embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises an elongated metallic cup 9 which is engageable beneath the gun 6 for enclosing the guard 7 and the trigger 8. As shown to advantage in Figure 3 of the drawing, the cup 9 is substantially U-shaped in transverse section.

A pair of substantially U-shaped resilient metallic straps 10 removably secure the cup 9 in position beneath the gun 6. The straps 10 straddle the gun 6 and have one end portion pivotally secured, as indicated at 11, to one of the side walls 12 of the cup 9.

The other end portions of the straps 10 are adjustably and detachably secured to the other side wall 13 of the cup 9 by metallic connectors 14. The connectors 14 comprise metallic blocks or plates 15 having slots 16 extending vertically therethrough for slidably receiving the straps 10. Set-screws 17 are threadedly mounted in the inner sides of the plates 15 and engaged with the straps 10 for securing said straps in adjusted position in said plates. Threaded openings 18 in the plates 15 accommodate the set-screws 17. .The set-screws 17 comprise reduced necks 19 projecting from the plates 15 and terminating in 'is substantially reversed.

Rotatably mounted in the cup 9 on the side wall 13 thereof between the openings 21 is a disk 22. A pair of. bolts 23 have one end portion pivotally connected offcenter to the disk 22, as indicated at 24. The free end portions of the bolts 23 are slidable in guides 25 which are provided therefor in the cup 9. The disk 22 is actuated by a suitable lock 26 on the cup 9. The bolts 23 are engageable with the necks 19 behind the heads 20 of j the screws 17.. Toward this end, the bolts 23 are pro- -1 vided in their free ends with notches or recesses 27 for thev reception of the screws 17. i

It is thought that the use of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly,

the cup 9 is slipped upwardly over the trigger guard 7 beneath the gun 6. The straps 10 are then engaged over the gun 6, the plates 15 are adjusted, if necessary, on said straps and secured by the screws 17 and said screws are then inserted in the cup 9 through the openings 21. Through the medium .of a suitable key the lock 26 is then actuated for projecting the bolts 23 into engagement with the screws 17 for securing the connectors 14 in position on the cup 9. It will thus be seen that the trigger 8 is completely enclosed and shielded for preventing unauthorized use of the gun or the accidental firing thereof. Of course, to remove the device the foregoing procedure If desired,-the bolts 23 may be spring projected. Q The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modficatons and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact constructon and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling Within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A gun lock of the character described comprising: a cup engageable beneath the gun and adapted to receive the trigger and the trigger guard thereof, a pair of substantially U-shaped attaching straps straddling the gun and having one end portion anchored to one side of the cup, and means adjustably and detachably connecting the other end portions of said straps to the other side of said cup, said means including plates having slots therein slidably receiving the straps, screws threadedly mounted in the plates and' engaged with the straps for securing said plates in adjusted position thereof, and means securing said screws on the cup.

2. A gun lock of the character described comprising: a cup engageable beneath the gun and adapted to receive the trigger and trigger guard thereof, substantially U-shaped attaching straps straddling the gun and having one end portion pivotally secured to the cup, said cup having a pair of openings therein, a pair of plates mounted for sliding adjustment on the other end portions of the straps, screws threadedly mounted in the plates and engaged with the straps for securing said plates in adjusted position thereon, said screws being insertable in the cup through the openings, and means in the cup for anchoring the screws therein.

3. A gun lock of the character described comprising: a cup engageable beneath the gun and adapted to receive the trigger and trigger guard thereof, substantially U-shaped attaching straps straddling the gun and having one end portion pivotally secured to the cup, said cup having a pair of openings therein, a pair of plates mounted for sliding adjustment on the other end portions of the straps, screws threadedly mounted in the plates and engaged with the straps for securing said plates in adjusted posit-ion thereon; said screws being insertable in the cup throughthe openings-and means -inthe cup for-anchoring the screws therein, said means-including a disk rotatably mounted in the cup, and a pair *of bolts slidab ly mounted in the cup 'and -h'avin'goneiend portion pivotally' secured ofi'e-ceriterl-ito the disk for actuation thereby; the=free-ends of said bolts beingengageablewith the screws.-
