Thisinvention relates to forearms for firearms and more particularly to a utility forearm adapted for use with a firearm to enhance the ornamental appearance of the same, to provide a novel and useful hand grip for the firearm, and, if desired, to provide a steady rest for the same.
The principal object of this invention is to provide for a firearm a utility forearm having a tip of ornamental appearance and adapted to be moved into position to act as a hand grip, or firearm steady rest.
A further object is to provide a forearm for a firearm which will be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, simple in construction, compact, of ornamental appearance, and which is very emcient and useful.
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, there has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings one form in which the features and principles of this invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.

Figure 1 is a side view of a firearm havingv a forearm embodying in its structure the features and principles of this invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the forearm of this invention;
Figure 3 is a top view of a broken portion of the forearm shown in Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of the forearm taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the reference numeral II denotes a firearm stock, having, in this instance, a forearm part I2 formed integral therewith, a receiver I3 having a barrel I 4 secured thereto and extending therefrom is mounted in the stock II, the forearm part I2 being disposed below the barrel I4 and having a longitudinal groove I5 therein which is arcuate in cross-section to receive the barrel I4, and forms sides I6 and H which extend upwardly about the barrel :The usual firearms parts, such as a trigger I8, a magazine I9, an operating handle 20, and sights 2| .and 22 are also provided.
In accordance with the principles of the present invention the forearm part I2 is provided with a tip 23 which has a longitudinally extending arcuate groove 24 to snugly fit around the barrel I 4, and forming sides 25 and 26 which extend upwardly along the sides of the barrel I4. To provide an ornamental appearance as well as to serve a useful purpose the upper edges of the 2 sides 25 and '26 are cross-grooved, in-this instance three cross-grooves 21 are provided. The forearm tip 23 is arranged to be swung downwardly away from the barrel I4 to form a hand grip, see dotted lines in Figure 1, or, by resting its end 28 upon a support, to form a steady rest for the firearm.
The forearm tip 23 is adapted to be swung upon a pivot pin 29 which extends transversely through the rear end of the tip 23 and the front end of the forearm part I2. In this instance a tongue 3I is formed on the rear end of the tip 23 adapted to fit into a groove 32 provided in the front end of the forearm part I2 to receive the same. The pivot pin 29 is so located that the under surface 33 of the rear end of the tip 23 will abut the front surface of a shoulder 34 of the forearm part I2 formed by the groove 32, to insure that the tip when it is swung downwardly will be rigidly supported in the desired position.
The forearm tips 23, when it is in barrel engaging position, as shown in full lines in Figure 1, is maintained in snug-engagement with the barrel I4 by means of a spring pressedplunger 36. The plunger 36 is arranged to'actuate within a bore 31 formed in the front end of the forearm part I2. This instance the bore 31 is lined with a metallic tube 38. A coiled spring 39 is disposed in the bore 36, or tube 31, and reacts between the inner end 4| of the bore and a head 42, pror vided on the outer end of the plunger 36, to constantly urge the plunger outwardly and, into pressing engagement with the rear end of the tip 23, when the forearm part I2 is against the barrel I4, or into pressing engagement against the lower surface 33 of the rear end of the tip 23, when the forearm part I2 is swung downwardly to form a hand grip. To insure that the forearm tip 23 is snugly pressed against the barrel I4 by the plunger 36, the axis of the bore 31, and/or the tube 38, is spaced below the axis of the pivot pin 29 whereby a constant upward swinging urge is imposed upon the tip 23. When the tip 23 is swung downwardly the plunger head 42 enters into a counter-bore 43 provided in the shoulders 34.
By the provision of the above described structure, a utility forearm is provided for a firearm which will enhance the ornamental appearance of the latter and be useful as a hand grip, or steady rest for the firearm.
While there has been shown and described herein a preferred form in which the features and principles of this invention are practically embodied, it will be understood that the same may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit and essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiment" be: considered. in: allrrespects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference beingz had to the claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the inventiom.
Having thus fully disclosed the invention,.what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is: I
1. A utility forearm for afirearm: comprising a forearm part having a vertical groove formedin its forward end, a forearm tip having, a tongue upon its rear end to fit into the groove in saidforearm part, a pivot pin extending through the forward end of said forearm part and the tongue onsaidforearnr tip, and a'spring pressed plunger, carriecthy saidforearm partina bore therein, the axis of said plunger being. below the axis of the; pivot. pin-,, inengagementwiththe rear end of the tongue; to urge the forward endof. the forearm tip upwardly.

A utility forearm for a firearm. comprising. a. forearm part having a vertical groove. formed in its: forward end, aforearm tip having. a tongue. upon: its; rear. end to fut into.- the groove in. said. forearm, part. .said: tongue having. an upper and a. lowersurfa'ce, apivotpirr extending: through the: forward: endtof said forearm. part and the/tongue. on: said forearm. tip-,. and a forwardly directed shoulder ontheforearm partat thebottom of the groove therein, said pivot, pin being disposed above; the lower surface of. the tonguev an. amount. gneater than it is: disposed below the. upper. surface ofsaid tongue to insure that said lower surface eng-agesisaict shoulder tolimit. the downwardswinging, movement of. said=forear1n tip. onsaid pivot pin.

4., In a firearm having a barrel, a forearm comprising-a forearm part extending forwardly along the-rear. portion ofthe firearm barrel, a forearm tip pivoted to. the front end of said forearm part I and extending substantially in alignment with .the forearm part. from the front end of the forear'm part toward the front end of the barrel and in..clos.e engagement with the under surface of the barrel, a pivot pim extending through the forearm. part and the forearmtip with. its. center above the longitudinalaxis. ofthe forearm tip, and spring means. positioned to react between the.
