The present invention relates to a device for attaching traveler split rings to spinning rings or yarn rings, and more particularly to a manually operated device in which the traveler split rings are resiliently urged against a stop means, and transversely pushed onto the flange of a spinning ring.
Traveler attaching devices in which the traveler split rings are gravity fed are known, but the known arrangements frequently jam, and are difficult to refill with traveler split rings. Moreover, the known devices for attaching travelers to spinning rings are diflicult to operate.
It is one Object of the present invention to provide a device for attaching travelers to spinning rings which operates reliably, and can be easily used by inexperienced operators.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an attaching device for travelers which can filled with a new stack of travelers.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an attaching device for travelers in which a stack of superimposed travelers is slidably guided on the carrier means toward a stop means which permits only pushing out of a single traveler by transversely moving operating means.
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide an attaching device for travelers having means for attaching the device to a spinning ring, while a traveler is pushed out and attached to the spinning ring.
With these objects in view the present invention mainly consists in an attaching device for attaching traveler split 1 in longitudinal direction of said car rier means. The carrier means is preferably a rod, but it is also contemplated to guide the stack of traveler split rings in a tubular member. At the rear end of the elongated carrier means, resilient means are provided which urge the stack of superimposed traveler split rings towards the front end of the carrier means so that the foremost traveler split ring is urged beyond the front end of the carrier means and abuts against a stop means which is spaced from the front end of the carrier means for substantially the thickness of a traveler split ring. Operating means are provided which are movable in a direction transverse to the carrier means and to the stack of traveler split rings for pushing the foremost traveler split ring in transverse direction and onto the flange of be easily rewhichthe slot formed in the stack of traveler split rings by the aligned end portions of the traveler split rings is located exactly opposite the flange of the spinning ring to which the traveler split rings have to be attached.
According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention a carrier rod on which the traveler split rings are strung is arranged in a tubular handle member on which an operating lever is pivoted for operation by the thumb of the person holding the tubular member. The operating lever carries a pusher member which is -ar ranged opposite the foremost traveler split ring and pushes the same onto the spinning ring flange when the operating lever is operated.
Another tubular member, closed at one end, carries in its interior a resilient means which engages the rear end of the stack of traveler split rings when the tubular member is attached to the tubular handle member. Such attachment is preferably carried out by releasable locking means, for example by a bayonet connection.
For refilling the device with a new stack of travelers a detachable magazine rod aligned with the carrier rod whereupon the new stack of travelers is manually pushed from the magazine rod onto the guide rod. The magazine rods are provided with blocking means for holding a stack of travelers thereon, such blocking means being released during the refilling operation. The magazine members have preferably channel-shaped cross-section and are drawn, cast, pressed, or extruded and consist of metal or a suitable synthetic resin.
According to a preferred construction of the channelshaped magazine members the cross-section is so chosen, that the magazine member engages the travelers split rings at three points.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating a spinning ring flange and a traveler split ring;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 in Fig. 4;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary, partly sectional view, of a detail of a device according to the present invention;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the attaching device;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view showing an empty attaching device;
Fig. 6 is a front view of the attaching device in operation;
Fig. 7 is a side-view of a magazine member during the refilling operation;
Fig. 8 is a side-view of another magazine member; and
Fig. 9 is a cross-sectional view of a preferred embodiment of a magazine member.
Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 3, a stack of traveler split rings 1 whose shape is best seen in Fig. 1, is guided on the elongated carrier rod 5 and urged by resilient means 6 toward the slightly resilient stop means 4. The distance between the forward end of the carrier rod 5 and the stop means 4 is designated with reference numeral 7 and is slightly less than the thickness 8 of one traveler split ring. The foremost traveler split ring is free to move in transverse direction when the pusher member 9 is moved in the direction of the arrow 10 since the resilient stop 4 gives a little when the traveler split ring slides over the end of carrier rod 5 which projects a short distance into the foremost traveler split ring, as shown in Fig. 3. The foremost traveler split ring is held by the end of rod and by stop 4 and cannot fall out, but must be pushed out. The carrier rod 5 is formed with an arcuate recess 5a which fits onto the outer periphery of the flange 2a of the spinning ring '2 so that the flange 2a of the spinning ring projects into the arcuate recess 5a when the device is held to the flange 2a. In this position, the traveler split rings project over the flange 2a for a short distance so that transverse movement'of the pusher member 9 snaps the foremost traveler split ring completely over the flange 2a of the spinning ring 2.
Referring now to Figs. 2, 4 and 5 which show a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a slotted supporting member 12 carries on a pivot means 13 a thumb operated lever 14 which is urged into the illustrated position by the spring 15. When the operating lever 14 is pressed by thumb pressure toward the stop means 4, the pusher member 9 separates the foremost traveler split ring 1 from the stack which is possible since the front end of the carrier rod 5 is spaced a suitable distance from the transverse face 4' of the stop means 4, as best seen in Fig. 5. The stop means 4 is secured to a member 16 which is mounted in a slot of the supporting member 12 and held therein by screws 17. The relative position of the members 16 and 4- can be adjusted since the screws 17 pass through elongated slots 16a in the member 16.
The carrier rod 5 has a projecting wall portion 30, best seen in Fig. 2, which is also clamped in the slot of the supporting member 12 and held by the screws 17. A tubular handle member 11 is also secured to the supporting member 12, and receives another tubular member 18 which is provided at the front end thereof with a bayonet connection 19 by which it is hooked to the projecting wall portion 30.
The tubular member 18 can be pulled out in the direction of the arrow 20, and is inserted in the opposite direction. A coil spring 6 is mounted in the interior of the tubular member 18 abutting against the closed rear end of the same and engages with its front end the rear end of the stack of traveler split rings which is supported on the carrier rod 5, urging the same in forward direction so that the foremost traveler split ring engages the stop means 4.
Fig. 6 is a front view of the arrangement showing the preferred construction of the stop means 4. The stop means 4 is provided with an attaching portion 4a which has a hooked-shaped portion 23 engaging the flange of the spinning ring during the attaching operation. The stop means have also a guiding portion 4b.
During the attaching operation the spinning ring 2 IS clamped into a member 21, and the guiding portion 4b is so dimensioned that the slot in the stack traveler split rings is located at the height of the flange 2a of the spinning ring 2 when the guiding portion 4b is placed on the guiding surface 22 of the member 21. The stop means 4 has also an arcuate projection 4c which fits into a peripheral recess of the spinning ring so that the device can be easily attached to the spinning ring in the exact position required for pushing a traveler split ring onto the flange of the spinning ring by operation of the operating lever 14.
Fig. 7 illustrates a magazine member 24 carrying a supply of traveler split rings 1. A pin 25 at one end, and a resilient releasable blocking means 27 hold the travelers on the magazine body, which is provided with a cenering pin 26. When the supply of travelers on the carrier rod 5 requires refilling, the tubular member 18 is taken off, and the centering pin 26 inserted into a corresponding recess'26a at the rear end of the carrier rod 5, whereupon the resilient blocking means 27 is manually depressed, and the stack of travelers pushed from the magazine body onto the carrier rod 5.
The embodiment of the magazine member'24a shown in Fig. 8"isprovided with a fixed ring 25a at one end a 1 thereof and with a detachable resilient ring 28 at the other end thereof.
A preferred embodiment of the magazine member is illustrated in Fig. 9 which shows a channel-shaped magazine member 2412 having a V-shaped cross-section and engaging the traveler split rings at three spaced points. The traveler split rings 1 have two leg portions 1a which are connected by curved portions having a small radius of curvature to the main center portion which has a greater radius of curvature. The ends of the legs of the V-shaped magazine member 24b engage the portions having a small radius of curvature, and the apex of the magazine member engages the center portion of the traveler split ring whereby an exact centering of the traveler split rings on the magazine member 2412 is obtained. Consequently the ends of all leg portions 1a are aligned, and a single slot is formed in the stack of travelers which permits an easy attachment of the device to the flange of the spinning ring 2 as shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 6.
The device according to the present invention is operated in the following manner: As shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 6, the device is attached to the flange 2a of the spinning ring 2 by hooking the attaching portion 4a at 23 onto the flange of the spinning ring and by resting the portion 412 on the supporting face 22 so that the flange of the spinning ring projects into the slot formed by the ends of the leg portions 1a of the stack of traveler split rings. Since the height of the supporting portion 4b corresponds exactly to the distance between the flange of the spinning ring and the supporting face 22, the operator can arrange the device into the required position without any difficulty, and even without looking. The traveler split rings are now in the position shown in Fig. l, and when the operating lever 14 is operated, the pusher member 9 moves in the direction of the arrows 10 in Fig. 3, and 3 in Fig. 1 and snaps the foremost traveler split ring over the annular flange 2a of the spinning ring 2.
Preferably the distance 7 between the stop means 4 and the forward end of the guiding rod 5 is slightly smaller than the thickness of any one traveler split ring and the stop means 4 resiliently gives during the traveler ejecting operation so that the ejected traveler split ring can slide over the end of rod 5 which projects into the foremost traveler split ring, and normally holds the same. When the pressure on the operating lever 14 is relieved, the spring 15 urges the lever to return to its inoperative position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, so that the spring 6 moves the stack of travelers forwardly, and the next following traveler engages the stop means 4 and is ready to be pushed out. 7
When so many travelers have been used that the coil spring 6 abuts on the projecting wall portion 30 of the carrier rod 5, a new stack of staples must be placed on the carrier rod 5. For this purpose the tubular member 18 is slightly pressed against the action of the spring 6 into the handle member 11 until the bayonet hook 19 releases the wall portion 30 whereupon the tubular member 18 is slightly turned into a position in which the slot of the bayonet connection is aligned with the wall portion 30 permitting removal of the tubular member 18. The rear end of the carrier rod 5 is now exposed. As shown in Fig. '7, the magazine member 25 is centered on the exposed rear end of the carrier rod 5, the blocking means 27 are depressed, and a spare stack of travelers is pushed onto the carrier rod 5 whereupon the tubular member 18 is inserted into the tubular handle member 11, the spring 6 compressed, and the bayonet connection 19 hooked onto the supporting wall portion 30 of the carrier rod 5.
In the event that the magazine member is shaped as shown in Fig. 9, corresponding center means are provided on the same and on the rear end of the carrier rod 5.
Instead of the thumb-operated lever 14, a doublearmed lever may be provided which extends along the tubular handle member 11 and is operated like a pair of pliers permitting exertion of a greater manual force.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of devices for attaching traveler split rings to spinning rings differing from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a device for attaching traveler split rings to spinning rings by transversely expelling the foremost traveler split ring of a spring urged stack of traveler split rings, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A device for attaching traveler split rings to a spinning ring, comprising, in combination, an elongated carrier means adapted to slidably support a stack of loosely superimposed traveler split rings for movement in longitudinal direction of said carrier means; supporting means supporting said carrier means; resilient means arranged at one end of said carrier means and adapted to urge the stack of superimposed traveler split rings toward the other end of said carrier means; a resilient stop means adjustably mounted on said supporting means for movement in longitudinal direction of said carrier means and having a smooth transverse face located opposite said other end of said carrier means so as to be adapted to block movement of the stack of traveler split said resilient means, said transverse face being spaced from said other end of said carrier means; means for adjusting said stop means to adjust the distance between said other end and said transverse face to a predetermined distance adapted to be slightly less than the thickness of any one of said traveler split rings so that only a portion of the foremost traveler split ring abutting on said traneverse face is located beyond said other end of said carrier means, said stop means having a transversely projecting hook-shaped attaching portion formed with a cutout matching the crosssectional outline of the spinning ring and adapted to engage the spinning ring for guiding the device along the spinning ring with said other end of said carrier means in a predetermined position with respect to the spinning ring, said transverse face extending onto said attaching portion for guiding an ejected traveler split ring onto the spinning ring; and operating means movable in a direction transverse to said carrier means for pushing said single foremost traveler split ring along said transverse face onto the spinning ring While said resilient stop means resiliently gives to permit passing of said foremost traveler split ring over said other end of said carrier means.
2. A device for attaching traveler split rings to a spinning ring, comprising, in combination, an elongated carrier rod adapted to slidably guide a stack of loosely superimposed traveler split rings strung thereon for movement in longitudinal direction, said carrier rod being formed with an arcuate recess for receiving a flange of the spinning ring; a supporting member supporting said carrier rod; a tubular handle member secured to said supporting member and housing said carrier rod in its interior; a tubular member attached to said tubular handle member, said tubular member being closed at one end thereof and having the other end thereof open and located within said tubular handle member surrounding said one end of said carrier rod; a coil spring located in said tubular member supported at said closed end of the same and adapted to engage and urge the stack of traveler split rings toward the other end of said carrier rod; releasable bayonet locking means for detachably connecting said open end of said tubular member to said handle member; a resilient stop means adjustably mounted on said supporting member for movement in longitudinal direction of said carrier rod and having a smooth transverse face located opposite said other end of said carrier rod so as to be adapted to block movement of the stack of traveler split rings under the action of said coil spring, said transverse face being spaced from said other end of said carrier rod; means for adjusting said stop means to adjust the distance between said other end and said transverse face to a predetermined distance adapted to be slightly less than the thickness of any one of said traveler split rings so that only a portion of the foremost traveler split ring abutting on said transverse face is located beyond said other end of said carrier means; a manually operated operating lever pivotally mounted on said tubular handle member; and a pusher member secured to said operating lever and being movable with the same in transverse direction to an operative position projecting between said transverse face of Said References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS
