Description

H. W. TAYLOR.
GATE.
(No Model.)
No 285.524 Patented Sept. 25, 1883.
INYENTOR.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. j
HIRAM \V. TAYLOR, OF RAMSEY, ILLINOIS.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 285,524, dated September 25, 1883.
Application filed May 24, 1883.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
l3e it known that I,HIRAM W. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ramsey, in the county of Fayette and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is aspecifieation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to gates; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, whereby a gate shall be pro 1 same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view 011 the line x x in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings designates a sill, which is provided with atransverse recess, B, of the width of the gate. At each end of said recess is a pair of uprights, C G and D D. At the upper ends of the uprights, G C is secured a cap-plate, E, having a pair of flanges, F F, extending downwardly outside the said uprights, and forming a chamber or casing in which is journaled apulley, G. The uprights D D likewise support a cap-plate, E, having three d'ownwardly-extending flanges, H, out side the said uprights, and forming chambers or casings, in the inner one of which a pulley,
G, similar to the other pulley designated by the same letter, is journaled. Another pulley, I, is journaled in the outer chamber or casing.
J J are two sets of lazy-tongs, the lowermost center pivots of which are secured to the ends of the sill A below the open ends of the recess B. The remaining center pivots of the said lazy-tongs are formed or connected by the gate-bars K, which are capable of moving vertically between the uprights C C and D D. I.
Brackets or bearings are providedin front of the sill A for a transverse shaft, L, to the ends of which pulleys M. are secured. Belts or bands N are attached to the said pulleys,
(No model.)
and passed over the pulleys G at the top of the uprights 0 (land D D, thence downwardly,
and attached to the projecting ends of one of The operation of this invention will be I readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When the operatingrope is pulled, so as to raise the weight from its normal position and throw it over to the opposite side of the sill, the shaft L turns, the belts N are unwound from the pulleys M, and the gate is lowered or allowed to drop by its own weight. YVhen the operation is reversed, the belts N are wound upon the pulleys M, and the weight upon the lever 0 serves to raise or close the gate.
I would have it understood that, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the gate might be so arranged as to lift open, instead of being lowered into a recess in the sill. This might beaccomplished by simply attaching the uppermost center pivots of the lazy-tongs to the upper ends of the posts, instead of the lowermost ones to the ends of the sill, and arranging the belts N to be wound upon the pulleys M, instead of being unwound, when the lever is raised from its normal position.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of a sill having a transverse recess extending throughout its entire length, a pair of uprights at each end of said sill, provided with cap-plates having downwardly-projecting flanges forming casings or chambers, pulleys journaled in the said oasings, lazy-tongs connected by their lowermost center pivots to the ends of the sill, below the recess in the same, transverse horizontal bars connecting the center pivots of said lazytongs, a shaft journaled transversely in front of the sill, pulleys upon the ends of the said shaft, bands attached to the said pulleys pass: ing over pulleys at the top of the gate and attached to the projecting ends of one of the my own I have hereto affixecl my signature in gate-bars, a weighted lever at one end of the presence of two Witnesses. transverse shaft and an operating-rope at- VT tached to the said lever and passing over a HIBAM TAYLOR" pulley at the upper end of one of the pairs XVitnesses: of uprights, substantially as set forth. FRANK M. BOLT,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as FRANCIS M. GUINN.
