Fried, University Heights, and Milton C. Carle= ton, South Euclid, Ohio, assignors to Nash Manufacturing Company, Cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application October 26, 1955, Serial No. 542,932
3 Claims. (Cl. -308) The present invention relates generally as indicated to a drawer for beds, and more particularly to a drawer assembly which may be easily and sturdily mounted on any one of a variety of difierent sizes and styles of beds.
It is one object of this invention to provide a drawer for beds which is of dust-proof construction and which has longitudinally adjustable drawer guides adapted to be secured to the side rails of a bed, whether the bed be of the wood frame type, the metal frame type, the metal cot type, or of the open type.
It is another object of this invention to provide a drawer for beds which employs hook-type bolts at the four corners of the extensible drawer guide assembly, said bolts being engaged on top of the slat rails in Wood frame beds or on top of the horizontal flanges of metal frame and cot type beds to thereby draw the drawer guides and extensions upwardly into tight engagement underneath such slat rails or horizontal flanges, as the case may be.
It is another object of this invention to provide a drawer for beds in which a unitary dust cover structure provides drawer guide channels and wherein the adjustable drawer guide extensions are of channel form to longitudinally slidably embrace the drawer guides with the top flange of each channel being made wider and so formed that the guides and extensions are held in longitudinal alignment in all relative adjusted positions.
It is another object of this invention to provide hook bolt clips attached to the ends of the drawer guides and to the ends of the slidable extensions which are so formed as to impart added rigidity or stability when the guides and extensions are firmly clamped under the side rails of the bed.
It is another object of this invention to provide a drawer for beds which, in the case of metal frame beds, is so formed that the drawer guides and slidable extensions simply hook over the vertical flanges of the side rails, the guides and extensions being held in predetermined laterally spaced-apart relation as by means of flexible metal straps.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent as the following description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the invention, then, comprises the features hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the following description and the annexed drawing setting forth in detail certain illustrative embodiments of the invention, these being indicative, however, of but a few of the various ways in which the principle of the invention may be employed.
In said annexed drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a preferred embodiment of this invention, the same being shown mounted on a wood frame bed;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary cross-section view, on enlarged 2,854,676 Patented Oct. 7, 1958 scale, taken substantially in a vertical plane passing through line 2-2 Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section view of one of the corner mountings, such section having been taken substantially along line 33, Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal cross-section view taken substantially along the line 4-4, Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a cross-section view similar to Fig. 3 except illustrating the manner of mounting the drawer structure to a metal frame bed in which the side rails are angles each having a vertically extending flange and a bottom horizontally inwardly extending flange;
Fig. 6 is another fragmentary cross-section view similar to Figs. 3 and 5 except illustrating the manner of mounting of the present drawer structure on a metal cot type bed in which the side rails comprise angles each having an inwardly extending horizontal flange and a downwardly extending vertical flange, a block of wood or the like being interposed between the hook bolt horizontal flanges and the drawer guide or extension thereof; and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a modification in which the drawer guides and extensions are integrally formed with hooks engaged over the upper edges of the outer upwardly extending flanges of the side rails of a conventional metal frame bed.
Referring now in detail to the drawer structures herein illustrated, and first to that illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6, the reference numeral 1 in Fig. 1 designates a familiar form of wood frame bed which includes a headboard 2, a footboard 3, and parallel side rails 4 extending therebetween, said side rails having nailed or otherwise secured thereto slat rails 5 upon which slats (not shown) are adapted to rest and to extend crosswise from one side rail 4 to the other, said slats being adapted to support thereon a box spring, inner spring mattress, or the like, in well known manner.
In the form of drawer structure illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6, there are opposite drawer guides 6 which are in the form of channels, the top and bottom flanges of which extend toward each other. The drawer guide channels 6 are held in predetermined spaced-apart relation as by means of the sheet metal dust cover 7 which has downwardly extending flanges along its opposite edges which are spot-welded or otherwise secured to the webs of the respective drawer guide channels 6. In order to make possible the use of relatively thin gauge sheet metal for said cover 7, the same may be formed with stiffening ribs 8 as shown.
Longitudinally slidably embracing the drawer guide channels 6 are opposite extension channels 9 which have bottom flanges underlying the bottom flanges of the drawer guide channels 6, and top flanges overlying the top flanges of said guide channels 6.
In order .to maintain the respective extension channels 9 and guide channels 6 in longitudinal alignment, the top flanges of the former are lanced or dimpled as at 10 and at points adjacent the edges of the top flanges of 1 the guide channels. For this purpose, the top flanges of the extension channels 9 are preferably wider than the top flanges of the guide channels 6.
Welded or otherwise secured adjacent the remote ends of the drawer guide channels 6 and extension channels 9 are hook bolt clips 11 providing openings for the hook bolts 12 and being formed with re-bent portions 14 to add to the effective width of the top flanges of the guide channels 6 and extension channels 9 and thereby provide added strength and stability when such guide channels 6 and extension channels 9 are engaged under the side rails 4 of the bed 1.
The drawer 15 may be of any familiar form but preferably is made of sheet metal to provide a bottom 16, opposite sides 17, and opposite ends 18 and 19, the upper edges of the ends preferably being rolled or bent over as at 20 to avoid sharp edges. The opposite sides 17 of the drawer 15 are bent outwardly, upwardly, and inwardly to fit into the longitudinal drawer guides defined by the guide channels 6 and cover 7 (see Fig. 2).
In installing the above-described drawer assembly, the hook bolts 12 adjacent the four corners are engaged with the tops of the opposite slat rails 5, .and the end portions of the guide channels 6 and extension channels 9 are disposed underneath the slat rails S, whereupon when the wing nuts 21 are turned, the guide channels 6 and extension channels 9 are thereby firmly secured in place.
In the case of metal frame beds (see Fig. the hook bolts 12 are simply placed over the inwardly extending flanges of the side angles 23 of the bed with the guide and extension channels 6 and 9 disposed underneath so that again, when the wing nuts 21 are tightened, the drawer assembly is firmly clamped in place.
In the case of metal cot type beds which have side rails 24 as in Fig. 6, it is preferred to use wood or like spacer blocks 25 underneath the top inwardly extending flanges of the angle side rails so as to position the drawer guide channels 6 and extension channels 9 below the bottom edges of the downwardly extending flanges. Here again, when the wing nuts 21 are tightened, the drawer assembly is firmly secured in place.
In Fig. 7, there is shown a simplified form of mounting in which the drawer guide channels 26 and the extension channels 27 are integrally formed with hooks 28 for hooking over the top edges of the vertical outside flanges of the angle side rails 29 as are employed in conventional metal frame beds. In order to prevent the opposite guide and extension channels 26 and 27 from separating, flexible metal straps 38 or the like may be employed. Of course, the drawer 15 itself will prevent the guide and extension channels 26 and 27 from moving toward each other.
As in the other form of the invention, a dust cover for the Fig. 7 drawer structure may be provided. As before, the extension channels 27 are dimpled or lanced as at 31 to maintain longitudinal alignment in all relative adjusted positions of the channels 27 with respect to the guide channels 26.
Other modes of applying the principle of the invention may be employed, change being made as regards the details described, provided the features stated in any of the following claims, or the equivalent of such, be employed.
We therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as our invention:
1. A drawer assembly for a bed comprising a pair of drawer guide channels, a pair of extension channels longitudinally slidably embracing the respective guide channels, said guide and extension channels having horizontally disposed flanges for attachment to side rails of said bed to resist turning of said channels about a longitudinal axis and thereby strengthen and stabilize the assembly when so attached, means to maintain the respective guide channels and extension channels substantially in longitudinal alignment, an open-top drawer longitudinally slidably fitted into said guide channels, a dust cover overlying the open-top drawer when the latter is fitted between said guide channels to serve as a dust .4 seal, said dust cover extending between said channels and secured at its opposite edges to said guide channels further to hold the latter in spaced-apart, parallel relation while permitting longitudinal movement of said extension channels relatively thereto and to impart rigidity to said entire drawer assembly, and means for supporting the remote ends of said guide and extension channels from side rails of said bed.
2. A drawer assembly for beds comprising a pair of drawer guide channels, a pair of extension channels longitudinally slidably embracing the respective guide channels, means to maintain the respective guide channels and extension channels substantially in longitudinal alignment, hook bolt clips secured adjacent the remote ends of said channels, hook bolts extending through said clips and provided with nut member for clamping the end portions of the guide channels and the extension channels under the side rails of a bed, said clips having portions which are flush with the top flanges of the channels to which they are secured to increase the effective width of said channel, said clip portion and top flanges mutually bearing against such side rails to strengthen and stabilize said channels when clamped under said side rails, a drawer longitudinally slidably fitted into said guide channels, and means for holding the guide channels in predetermined spaced-apart, substantially parallel relation.
3. A drawer assembly for beds comprising a pair of drawer guide channels, a pair of extension channels longitudinally slidably embracing the respective guide channels, means to maintain the respective guide channels and extension channels substantially in longitudinal alignment, hook bolt clips secured adjacent the remote ends of said longitudinally embracing channels, hook bolts extending through said clips and provided with nut members for clamping the end portions of the guide channels and the extension channels under the side rails of a bed, said clips having portions which are flush with the top flanges of the channels to which they are secured to increase the effective width of said channel, said clip portion and top flanges mutually bearing against such side rails to strengthen and stabilize said channels when clamped under said side rails, a dust cover extending between said guide and extension channels and having opposed flanges secured to the guide channels to hold the channels in spaced-apart parallel relation while permitting longitudinal movement of said extension channels relatively thereto and to impart rigidity to said entire drawer assembly, and a drawer longitudinally slidably fitted into said guide channels.
