TUB-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,302, dated September 18, 1883.

It is the common practice in preparing tubs and similar wares for transportation to pack them in nests-one with another. Some styles of handles very much interfere with this style of packing, while others stick up above the tubs in the nests.
The object of my invention is to provide a neat, compact, strong, and reliable handle for tubs and similar vessels that will obviate the objections referred to.
To this end my invention consists in a metallic handle of peculiar form and a stave of peculiar form, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a stave, showing my handle attached. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of a portion of three tubs nested together for transportation, and Fig. 3 is an inside view of the upper portion of Fig. 1. v
A represents the stave of a tub or other vessel, shaped as usual in all respects, except at the handle 13, where its upper end is cut away to a depth corresponding to about one-half the thickness of a persons fingers-say threeeighths of an inchand to a Width corresponding to the width of the hand or of the opening in the handle B. The depth of this cut 0 does not extend below the chamfer D of the inner edge of the tub. If it did, it would be objectionable, as wasting a portion of the capacity of the tub. The stave, at both ends of and at the outer edge of the cut 0, is shaped to give the cut a neat form fitted to a persons hand.
The handle proper is the cross portion 72. This is provided with two tangs, c, which are but little thicker than common hoops. Therefore they require no special room for packing in the nest. The peculiarity of the handle consists in the curve (1 at the outer angle of the handle and tang, shaped to conform nearly to the inner chamfer, D, of the tub; and a further peculiarity consists in that the handle is riveted to the tub at a height which brings said curve d horizontally opposite to said chamfer, so that when tubs having such handles are nested to gether the curve 01 of the handle of one tub will be contiguous to the chamfer D of the next tub outside it. If this curve d were lower down than the position described, its shoulder would rest upon the next tub and damage it, or prevent close packing, while if this shoulder or curve at were above the top of the tub the thin tang of the handle would be very liable to be broken across the edge of the tub.
The handles will usually be made of cast malleable iron and tinned. The rivets and nails will also be tinned to prevent rust from staining the tub or its contents.
What I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the staves A of a tub, chamfered on their inner upper edge, D, and having one or more cuts, 0, in their upper ends, of the metallic handle B, having 'tangs c secured'to the stave at each side of the cut 0, said handlerising immediately from the top of the stave, and curved on its outer face at its juncture with its tangs opposite to and correspondingly inclined to said chamfered edge 1), as and for the purpose specified.
