NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES RICE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR INCREASING THE ORGANIC ACTION OF THE BLOOD, 0R MEDICAL MANIPULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,160, dated September 18, 1883.
' I Application filed June 9, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES RIcE,of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Medical Manipulators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,- which forms a part of this specification.
p This invention relatesto certain new and useful improvements in the construction of medical manipulators, by means of which an elastic compression can be produced upon various parfsof the human system.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the various parts, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing the device is shown with one of the similar jaws of the clamp uncovered. This device, so far as its operating parts are concerned, resembles in structure the two-screw clamp, such as is ordinarily used by mechanics, except as I will now explain.
A represents the fixed jaw, sleeved up on the screwB in such manner as not to interfere with the free rotation of such screw; 0 is the other jaw, through which the screw B is threaded, as well as the screw D, for the purpose of adjusting the jaws in their relative position in the well-known manner. Both these jaws, from the point a in the immediate front of the screw B, are preferably made wider than the other parts of the jaw, and thinner, tapering toward the point, in order to give an elasticity at this end of the jaws, which does not occur in the carpenters clamp, where rigidity of I these parts is necessary for successful operation. To prevent pain to the patient in the application of this device upon more tender 0 parts of the body, I sleeve upon the elastic part of each of these jaws a cushion, E.
This device will be found of great benefit,
when properly applied and manipulated, in
producing more efficient action in the differ- 5 cut organs of the body, in drawing blood from one portion of the system to another, by being securely clamped upon that portion of the system to which it is desired to produce the action and draw the blood, and using the clamp as a handle, so to speak, producing a violent action of the contact parts, which will cause the blood to center at such points, thereby relieving't-he other parts where there may be dan ger arising from a surplus of blood, and in all cases facilitating the cure of the patient where organic action of the blood and its circulation "are the factors necessary to be brought into play.
What I claim as my invention is 1. An adjustable medicalmanipulator, substantially as described, and provided wit-helastic jaws, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. I
2. In combination with the spring-jaws of a medical manipulator constructed substantially as described, the removable cushions sleeved thereon, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
JAMES RICE.
