Description

p 1958 c. K. ADCOCK 2,850,772
SLIDING DOOR TRACK Filed July 15, 1957 2,850,772 Patented Sept. 9, 1958 SLIDDI G DOOR TRACK Clem K. Adcock, Tucumcari, N. Mex.
Application July 15, 1957, Serial No. 671,848
2 Claims. (Cl. 20-19) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in overhead, tracks particularly for sliding by-pass closet doors and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a track of this character which, when installed, will be substantially concealed from view, obviating the necessity of casing in around the track to cover the same, as at present.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a sliding door track of the character described which constitutes the header of the door frame.
Still another important object of the invention is to provide a novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby it will be virtually impossible for the door hangers to jump the track.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a sliding door track of the character set forth which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, neat and attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured and installed at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view, showing a door track embodying the present invention installed;
Figure 2 is a view in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure l; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of an end portion of the track.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a track which is designated generally by the reference character 4. The track 4 is of metal and includes an elongated plate 5 of suitable dimensions having fixed longitudinally thereon a centrally located reinforcing T-bar 6. Longitudinal slots 7 are provided in the plate 5 on opposite sides of the bar 6.
The track 4 extends between the upper end portions of the jambs 8 of a door frame 9. Inverted angle iron bars 10 are fixed on the longitudinal marginal portions of the plate 5 and provide, in conjunction therewith, channels 11 having fixed therein nailing strips 12 of suitable wood to which the trim (not shown) is secured.
Reference character 13 designates a pair of sliding doors suspended from the track 4. This is accomplished through the medium of hangers 14 comprising brackets or plates 15 fixed on the upper end portions of the doors 13 and operable in the slots 7. Rotatably mounted on the upper end portions of the brackets or plates 15 are wheels or rollers 16 which travel on the plate 5.
It is thought that the invention will be readily understood from a consideration of the foregoing. Of course, any desired number of hangers 14 may be provided on the doors 13. The track 4 with the nailing strips 12 provides a header for the frame 9, which header is of the same width as the jambs 8. As hereinbefore stated, the usual trim is nailed directly to the strips 12. It will be observed that the construction and arrangement is such that derailment of the hangers 14 is virtually impossible.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily uderstood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. An overhead sliding door track comprising: an elongated plate for mounting on the upper end portions of the jambs of a door frame, angle bars fixed longitudinally on the plate and defining, in conjunction with the longitudinal marginal portions thereof, a pair of channels, and nailing strips fixed in the channels for securing trim to said plate, said plate having longitudinal slots therein between the angle bars for the reception of door hangers.
2. A sliding door track of the character described comprising, in combination with a door frame including a pair of jambs, an elongated plate extending between the upper end portions of the jambs, said plate having a pair of spaced, parallel, longitudinal slots therein for the reception of door hangers, a reinforcing inverted T-bar fixed on the plate between the slots, inverted angle iron bars fixed longitudinally on the plate and defining channels in conjunction with the longitudinal marginal portions of said plate, said plate conforming substantially to the width of the jambs, and nailing strips fixed in the channels for mounting door frame trim on the track.
