11 Claims. (Cl. 223-96) I This invention relatese to new and useful improvements in clothes hangers.

More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved clothes hanger which can be used to hold a pair of trousers or other` garments tautly in proper creased retaining position regardless of whether the hanger is hung in a closet, suitcase or any other place.

As a further object, the present invention proposes forming the hanger with a crossbarrand with an angular member having a horizontal bar adapted to be disposed substantially parallel to the crossbar .and with extendible and retractable means connecting the angularmember and the crossbar to adjust the hanger for dierent size garments and to permit garments to be easily and Vconveniently put on and removed from the hanger and to be securely and properly held on the hanger.

Another object of the invention is to provide means to facilitate folding of the garment and to prevent the folded portion from slipping olf the hanger.

A specific object is to provide a clothes hanger adjustable in two directions to accommodate the hanger to various sized suitcases and the like whereby shifting of the hanger is prevented.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

A garment hanger `made in Vaccordance with the first form of the invention is illustrated in Fig. l and is designated generally by the reference numeral 15. The hanger is preferably made of metal such as a heavy gauge wire but may be made of plastic o-r any other suitable hangerV material. The hanger consists Aof a three-sided frame formed of anV upper angular section and a lower angulary section. The upper angular section consists of a- ,cross or horizontally disposed 'bar 16 and an integral vertically disposed bar 17 extending downwardly therefrom at one end thereof. The lower end 18 of har 17 is externally screw-threaded. The other end of the 'crossbar is free.

The lower angular section consists of a horizontally disposed bar-19 and a vertically disposed integral bar 20 at one end thereof extending upwardly in alignment with the vertical bar 17 of the upper section. The upper end 22 of vertical bar 20 is externally screw-threaded, the threads etxending in a direction opposite to those of bar 17. A turnbuckle in the form of an elongated internally screw-threaded tube 23 connects the two

17 and 20, the threads of the tube being righthanded and left-handed to icoact with the threads on the vertical rods. Upon turning of the turnbuckle, the sections will move toward or away from each other thereby adjusting the length of the frame.

A hook 24 having an elongated externally screwthreaded shank 25 extends through a threaded hole 26 in the crossbar 16 midway its ends, whereby the hook is supported in adjusted upright position.

The lower horizontally disposed bar 19 is made extensible by means of an elongated screw-threaded rod 27 separate therefrom and adjustably supported parallel and adjacent thereto by an internally screw-threaded eye or metal loop 2S secured to the extreme free end of the bar. Rod 27 is provided with a head 29 on its outer end.

30 and 31 provide releasable clip means to hold both waist and end portions of a garment suspended from the crossbar 16 with the garment folded around the horizontal rod 19 of the lower angular section.

The operation of the device is simple. Hook 24 enables the hanger to be hung in closets and the like, and when packed in a suitcase such as shown in Fig. 3, it serves by engaging the wall of the suitcase to steady the frame and keep the frame and supported garment from shifting in ythe suitcase. The waistband of a pair of trousers, for example, or other garment is gripped by the

30 and 31 and the trouser legs or other portions ofthe supported garment are folded around the horizontal rod 19 of the lower angular section, ends of the other supported garment are brought upwardly and pinched by the clothespins against the crossbar 16 thereby securely clamping the garment onto the frame. In supporting trousers, for example, the head 29 of the rod 27 is positioned outside of the metal loop 28 for adjustment so as to engage the inner face of a suitcase or the like .and to prevent the garment hanger from shifting transversely. The turnbuckle 22 provides extensible and retractable means for tautly and rmly holding the garment between the upper crossbar 16 and the horizontal bar 19 of the lower angular section.

In the modied form of hanger shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the turnbucklevis replaced byan eye or loop member '30 with'smooth inner wall on the vertical rod 17 of the upper section, and with a similar eye or loop member 31 on the vertical rod 26 of the lower angular section whereby said vertical rods may be positioned alongside of and in slidable relation to each other, so thatV the frame may be lengthened or shortened. In all other respects, the form of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is similar to the form of Fig. l and similar reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts.

In the modifications shown in Fig. 5, the frame is much simplified, consisting only of an upper horizontally disposed bar 40 supporting the clothespins 41 and a lower horizontally disposed bar 42 parallel to bar 40. The

40 and 42 are connected by an elongated rod 43 extending through a threaded hole 44 in the upper crossbar 40 and formed at its upper threaded end with a hook 45. The bottom end of the rod 43 is formed with a reduced neck portion 46 and an enlarged head 47 at its extremity. The head is swivelly housed in an upstanding cylindrical hollow lug 48 having a restricted opening 49 around the neck portion 46. In this form, the upper horizontal bar 40 may be turnably adjusted along the rod 43 to move said bar toward and away from the lower bar 42.

The extensible means for the lower bar 42 consists of an elongated cap or head 50 threaded onto the threaded end 51 of the bar 42. In this form the garment is supported in the same manner as in the other forms of the invention, and prevents the hanger from shifting transversely.

While I have illustrate-d and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that l do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modications may be made within the scope of the invention as dened in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

l. A garment hanger Ycomprising a crossbar, a hook supported on the crossbar, a vertical bar extending downwardly from one end of the crossbar, an angular ection including an upwardly extending vertical bar connected with the downwardly extending bar and a horizontal bar disposed substantially parallel to the crossbar, and releasable clip means on the crossbar for securing the waist and en-d portions of a garment to the crossbar with the garment folded around the horizontal bar of the angular section.

2. A garment hanger comprising a crossbar, a hook supported on the crossbar, a vertical bar extending downwardly from one end of the crossbar, an angular section including an upwardly extending vertical bar connected with the downwardly extending bar and a horizontal bar disposed substantially parallel to the crossbar, releasable 4clip means on the crossbar for securing the waist and end portions of a garment to the crossbar with the garment folded around the horizontal bar of the angular section, and extendible and retractable means connecting the vertical bar of the angular section with the vertical bar extending from the crossbar.

A garment hanger comprising a crossbar, a hook supported on the crossbar, a vertical bar extending downwardly from one end of the crossbar, an angular section including an upwardly extending vertical bar connecte-d with the downwardly extending bar, and a horizontal bar disposed substantially parallel to the crossbar, releasable clip means on the crossbar for securing the waist and end portions of a garment to the crossbar with the garment folded around the horizontal bar of the angular section, and extendible and retractable means connecting the vertical bar of the angular section with the vertical bar extending from the crossbar, said extendible and retractable means being a turnbuckle.

A garment hanger comprising a crossbar, a hook supported on the crossbar, a vertical barV extending downwardly from one end of the crossbar, an angular section including an upwardly extending vertical bar connected with the downwardly extending bar, and a horizontal bar disposed substantially parallel to the crossbar, releasable clip means on the ycrossbar for securing the waist and end portions of a garment to the crossbar with the garment folded around the horizontal bar of the angular section, and extendible and retractable means connecting the vertical bar of the angular member with the vertical bar extending from the crossbar, said extendible and retractable means being a turnbuckle, an auxiliary bar secured to the said horizontal bar and means for extending the said auxiliary bar to prevent the hanger from shifting in a transverse direction.

A garment hanger comprising a crossbar, a hook supported on the crossbar, a vertical bar extending downwardly from one end of the crossbar, an angular section having an upwardly extending vertical bar connected `with the downwardly extending bar, and a horizontal bar disposed substantially parallel to the crossbar, and releasable clip means on the crossbar for securing the waist and end portions of a garment to the crossbar with the garment folded around the horizontal bar of the angular section, said releasable clip means being a pair of spaced clip-type clothespins.

A garment hanger comprising a crossbar, a hook supported on the crossbar, a vertical bar extending downwardly from one end of the crossbar, an angular section having an upwardly extending vertical bar connected with the downwardly extending bar, and a horizontal bar disposed substantially parallel to the crossbar, releasable clip means on the crossbar for securing the waist and end portions of a garment to the crossbar with the garment folded around the horizontal bar of the angular section, said releasable clip means being a pair of spaced cliptype clothespins, and extendible and retractable means connecting the vertical bar of the angular section with the vertical bar extending from the crossbar.

A garment hanger comprising a crossbar, a hook supported on the crossbar, a vertical bar extending downwardly from one end of the crossbar, an angular section having an upwardly extending vertical bar connected with the downwardly extending bar disposed substantially parallel to the cross'bar, releasable clip means on the crossbar for securing the waist and end portions of a garment to the crossbar with the garment folded around the horizontal bar of the angular section, said releasable clip means being a pair of spaced clip-type clothespins, and extendible and retractable means connecting the vertical bar of the angular section with the vertical bar extending from the crossbar, said extendible and retractable means being a turnbuckle.

A garment hanger comprising a frame having a pair of opposed angular sections having opposed horizontal bars and aligned threaded vertical bars, a turnbuckle connecting the aligned vertical bars, means on one of the horizontal bars for fastening a garment thereon, and a hook member on said 'latter horizontal bar for supporting the hanger on a support.

A garment hanger comprising a frame having a pair of opposed angular sections having opposed horizontal bars and aligned threaded vertical bars, a turnbuckle connecting the aligned vertical bars, clothespins on one of the horizontal bars for fastening a garment thereon, and a hook member on said latter horizontal bar for supporting the hanger on a support.

A garment hanger comprising a frame having a pair of opposed angular sections having opposed horizontal bars and aligned threaded vertical bars, a turnbuckle connecting the aligned vertical bars, clothespins on one of the horizontal bars for fastening a garment thereon, a hook member on said latter horizontal bar for supporting the hanger on a support, and means for extending the length of one of said horizontal bars.
