Description

A. LEIGHTHEISER.
WASHING MACHINE.
No. 28,494. Patented May 29, 1860.
if/www Juve/2in1? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. LEIGHTHEISER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,494, dated May 29, 1860.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. LEIGHTHEISER, of the city of Reading, county of Berks, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ilashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in having an ordinary tub A, which is furnished with a brace B, across the'center and is secured into the lugs of the tub by means of small pins C, C.
D is a vertical shaft which has its bearings in the brace B, and in a small step in the bottom of the tub A and is furnished with a wheel E which has curved arms and is rigidly secured thereto close to the inner bottom of tub A.
E is a hand crank which ts loosely on the shaft D and is furnished with a small feather which slides in a suitable slot in shaft D and will rise and descend as necessity requires.
Gr is a square hollow shaft which slides over shaft D and is furnished with a hand crank H at the top end which is firmly secured thereto.
J is a center piece which is rigidly secured to the square shaft Gr, and is furnished with semicircular lids K, K, which are attached thereto by means of hinges L.
M are turn latches fastened to the center piece J by which means the semicircular lids K, K, are kept down in proper place during operation.
O, O, are nobs secured into the lids K, K, by which means the lids may be readily opened and closed. The under surface of the semicircular lids K, K, and the center piece J are furnished with curved ribs or arms P P which are cut through at the hinged joints and are curved toward the periphery thereof and the arms of wheel E are curved toward the center in an opposite direction which works the clothes to and from the center while being oscilated by the operation of the machine.
The tub A being partly filled with water and the clothes put therein, the semicircular lids K, K, are closed down and held firmly by the turn latches M; the cranks F and H are operated to and from each other'in an opposite direction by which means the clothes are washed completely. The brace B and the rubber wheels may be readily removed, and the tub used for other purposes which makes it a very useful and cheap machine.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The use of two rubber disks, with radially curved arms, constructed as described.
2. Center piece J, furnished with hinged semicircular lids, turn-latches M, radially curved rubbers E, K, braceB, and hand cranks F, H; the whole arranged and combined for the purposes as set forth.
A. LEIGHTHEISER.
