IMPROVED WASHING AND WRINGING MACHINE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,698, dated November 12, 1861.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS FACE, of Covington, inthe county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Clothes Washing and \Vringing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the foilowing is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side sectional View of my invention, taken in the line Fig. 3; 2, a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 2.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.

The object of this invention is to obtain a clothes Washer and wringer so arranged and combined that both operations may be thoroughly performedv and wit-h but a simple manipulation of the parts.

The invention consists in the employment or use of a jointed or hinged box or frame, which is fitted within the suds-box and used in connection with oscillating wash-boards, one of which is tted in the suds-box and the other in the hinged box or frame, and arranged to operate as hereinafter described.

The invention further consists in a clotheswringing device applied to the suds-box and arranged substantially as hereinafter shown and described, so that the device may be readily used after the washing operation is done.

To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A represents the suds-box or receptacle which receives the suds and clothes. This box has parallel sides c a and a curved bottorn b, and is supported at a suitable height by legs c.

To the upper part of the suds-box A there is attached at one end by pivots d a box or frame B. This box is allowed to t snugly in the upper part of the suds-box, and it is formed of two side pieces e e, connected by a crosspiece f, which forms its head-piece. The box or frame B is also provided with a door g, and a flap or door h is attached to its lower end. The box or frame B when not in use may be elevated or turned up out of the suds-box A, as shown in Fig. 1, and when required for use may be turned down so as to tit. snugly on or in the upper part of the sudsbox A, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.

On the outer part of the box o r frame B there is secured a lever or hand-frame C, to which two pairs of rods h h h h are attached at opposite sides of its fulcrum t'. The rods h h are attached by joints j to a wash-board C', the upper end of which is secured by pivots 7s to the lower part of the box or frame B. The rods h 71J are attached to the center of the Wash-board C', as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The rods h' h are attached to the upper end of a wash-board D, the lower end of which is pivoted in the lower part of the suds-box A, as shown at Z. y

From the above description it will be seen that by vibrating the lever or hand-frame C the wash-boards C' D will be oscillated and the clothes which are placed in the suds-box A with a requisite quantity of suds will be thoroughly washed or cleansed. The Washboards are perforated, as shown at fm, in order to allow the suds to pass freely through them and thereby insure a more eflicient action of the wash-boards on the clothes.

To each side of the suds-box A there is attached an upright. These uprights are designated by D D. One upright D has concave sides, and around this upright the clothes to be wrung are placed. The other upright D has a thimble m fitted in it, and in this thimble the inner end of a crank E is fitted or secured by a pivot n. The thimble'm/ has a trilateral opening o made through it, and the inner end of the crank has a straight or nearly straight surface p, which forms a tangent with its fulcrum or pivot n, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.

The two u prights D D with the thimble m and crank E form the wringing device, and when it is used the box or frame Bis elevated or turned up, as shown in Figs. l and 3. This elevated position of the box or frame B leaves the uprights D D fully exposed, equally so as if the box or frame B were not attached, andthe clothes are passed ordoubled around the upright D, and the ends placed in the thimble m and clamped or secured therein by the inner end of crank E, the power applied tothe crank in turning it caussacos ing the inner end of the crank to grasp firmly the ends ot' the clothes andinsure the proper twisting or wringing of the same. Thus it will be seen that by the arrangement of the box or frame B it may be elevated out of the Way when the Wri n gin g device is required for use, and still be adjusted in proper position to admit of the Wash-boards C D being operated equally as Well as if the box or frame .B were permanently attached to the sndS-box A.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination of the suds-box A with the box or frame B, the latter being secured to the former by hinges or joints, and said box or frame having thelever or hand-frame C attached, which frame C is connected to the Wash-boards C D by the rods h h h h', all being arranged, as shown, to admit of the elevation of the box or frame CWhen not required for use. K

2. The uprigllts D D', attached to the sides of the suds-box A, the upright D being provided with the thimble m', and crank E, arranged, substantially as shown and described, so as to grasp and hold the ends of the clothes and insure the proper twisting or wringing of the same, as set forth.

3. The adjustable box or frame B and wasliboards C D, arranged as shown in relation With the suds-box A, in combination with the wringing device formed of the uprights D D', thilnble m', and crank E, all arranged for joint operation, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
