CORN-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,663, dated September 11, 1883.

fo all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BYRON PHELPs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline,L in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Planters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same, referd ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters 'or figures of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this spec-incation.
rIhis invention relates to' corn-planters of that class in which an lintermittent rotary mo tion is given the seed-cup wheel by a slide having pawls pivoted or hinged thereto, and the invention consists in the use of pawls so constructed that they will not only act to give forward movement to the seed wheels, but will also act to arrest the movement of the seed-wheel at each end of the throw of the slide, and further act, when the slide has made a partial movement and given a partial move- `ment to the seed-wheel, to give the seed-wheel a reverse movement as the slide is drawn backward.
rlheA invention further con'sists in constructions and combinations hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims hereto annexed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the application of my improvements to the seed-dropping devices of an ordinary cornplanter, Figure lis a top plan showing the actuating-slide at theleft-hand end of its throw.

Referring to the drawings by letters, the same letter 'indicating the same part in the several figures, A representsthe bottom, and 5o B the sides, ofthe seed-box. C is a reciprocat ing slide, formed of side limbs or bars, cc, and end bars, c, guided in its path by the sides B, and by a stud, a, which projects downward from the slide Cinto a slot, a', in the bottom A. D is 5 5 the seed wheel or disk, having radial lugs d projectingfrom its periphery, and a series of seed-holes, d, arranged in a circle concentric to its axis of rotation. rIhe seed-wheel D is centrally j ournaled by `a bolt, c, on a disk, E, 6o which is located between the limbs c c, and is fixed to the bottom A and projects upwardly to yabout same height as the limbs c c. The foregoing parts described by letter are parts of an ordinary corn-planter, and need not be any more fully herein described.4 Any ordinary or desired cap-plate and cut-off maybe used with my invention, and are not shown in the drawings.

A spiral spring, h, is placed beneath the short end or heel of each pawl G G', which presses said end upward, 75 and the long end thereof downward, to its respective limb of the slide. rlhe pawls G G are formed on their under sides as shown by Figs. 2 and 3 by full lines, and at thelother figures by dotted lines-that is, lwith a recess, 8o g, formed therein, having end walls or lugs, g g. rlhese pawls are located at opposite ends of the limbs c c, with their pawl ends pointing in opposite directions and their ends g sloped or tapered upward from the wall g 8 5 outward. As the slide O is moved toward the left hand to complete its throw, as shown at Fig. l, the wall g of the pawl G, acting on a lug, d, will move the seed-wheel the necessary distance to effect the dropping of 'a charge of 9o seed in the ordinary manner through the opening a in the bottom A and disk E. 'As the slide and seed-wheel move, las last described, by the action of the pawl G on a lug d, a lug d nearly on the opposite side of the seed-wheel, striking the slope g of the pawl G,will raise said paw1,`as shown at Fig. 9, and allow the lug d to pass beneath it to the recess g, when the pawl will fall, .and said lug d come in contact with the wall g' of the pawl G, and thereby arrest the movement of theseed-wheel at the proper position for discharging seed, asv
hereinbefore described. At Fig. 5 the slide is shown as having completed its throw to the right hand, in which case the wall g" of the pawl G gave the movement to the seed-wheel, and the wall g' of the pawl G' arrested its movement, in a manner already described. In addition to these functions of the pawls in moving the seed-wheel and in stopping it at the proper angular positions in its rotation, they further have another function of giving a reverse movement to the seed-wheel when the slide is given a lpartial movement only, and then returned in a reverse direction. This feature is illustrated at Fig. 4, where the slide C is shown as having iirst made a partial movement toward the left hand, and the seed-wheel as having made a partial movement by the action of the wall g" on a lug, d. The slide is shown as having been moved then the distance of a space, g, toward the right hand, thereby bringing the wall g' in contact with the same lug d last acted on by a wall, g", so that by the further movement of the slide to the right hand the wall g will acton the lug d and reverse the movement of the seed-wheel, and thereby restore it to its proper position for the full action of the slide at its next throw.
The pawls G G' may both be placed at the same ends of the limbs c c', with their acting ends pointing in the same direction, as shown at Fig. 7, by sloping the under side of one pawl from the wall g' toward its hinged end, as shown at Fig. 8, and by aslight change in the walls g g".
The lugs d may project from the seed-wheel, or from a plate beneath it, connected to the seed-wheel, and smaller than the seed-wheel, so that the limbs c c' will be brought closer together. u
Gravitating pawls may -be used instead of spring-pawls, if preferred. Other changes may be made in the form of the recesses g and lugs g' g", and in the shape of the pawls and manner of hinging them, and in the lugs on the seed-wheels and the slide C, and hence I do not limit my claim to the specific construction of these parts shown; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y 1. In combination with the seed-wheel having radial lugs, the reciprocating slide-bar,
and pawls hinged thereto, having lugs g' g", adapted to impart movement to the seed-wheel, andto bring it to rest at the proper position for dropping seed, substantially as and for-the purpose specified.
2. In combination, the seed-wheel having radial lugs d, with the slide C, having limbs c c', and pawls G G', hinged to said limbs, and provided with lugs or walls g' g", adapted to impart intermittent rotary motion to the seedwheel in one direction, substantially as described. l
3. In combination, the seed-wheel having radial lugs, with the slide C, havinglimbs c c', and pawls G G', hinged to said limbs, and provided eachwith a lug, g", adapted to impart an intermittent rotary motion in one direction, and each with a lug, g', adapted to arrest the motion of the seed-wheel when a full throw of the slide has been made in either direction, and to reverse the movement of the seed-wheel when the slide is reversed after a partial throw, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In combination with seed-wheels having projecting lugs d, pawls G G', having lugs g' Vg", adapted to coact with said lugs d and to be' reciprocated by any suitable mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In combination with awheel, I), and slide C, the pawls G G', having lugs g' g", adapted to coact with projections on said wheel, to impart to it an intermittent rotary motion in one direction and to arrest its movements, substantially'as described.
6. In combination, the seed-wheel having radial lugs, with the slide having pawls G G', hinged thereto, each with lugs g' g" and a sloped part, g, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. In a corn-planter, the pawls G G', constructed substantially as described, in combination 'with a slide to which they are hinged, and aseed-wheel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
8. Pawls G G', having recesses g, walls g' g", and sloping part g', in combination with a corn-planter seed-wheel and a slide to which the pawl is hinged,.substantially as and for the purpose specified.
