To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON PHELrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illi- 5 nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Planters; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and4 eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to corn-planters of that class in which a disk with seed-holes arranged in one or more circular series concentric with its axis of rotation is given an intermittent rotary motion by a reciprocating slide. In planters of this class as heretofore constructed either there has not been any means provided when the seed-wheel has been given part of its ordinary movement bya half-throw of the slide for returning the seed-wheel to its normal position by the return half-throw of the slide, or when such means have been provided they have consisted of lugs or projections other and additional to the lugs or pawls for propelling the seed-wheel, and the lugs or projections for arresting its motion at the end of each of its movements.
The obj ect of my invention is to use the same A lugs which arrest the motion of the seed-wheel at the end of each full movement thereof in returning it to its normal position by the return movement of the slide when the slide has only made apartial stroke and given thereby only a partial movement to the seed-wheel; and to this end my invention consists in the construction and in the relative arrangement of the stop-lugs on the slides with reference to the actuating-pawls, in combination with a seed-'wheel having radial lugs projecting outwardly above the slide, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a top plan showing the actuating-slide at the left-hand end of its throw; Fig. 2, a top plan showing the slide at the opposite end of its throw from that shown at Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side eleva- 5o tion of the working parts in same relative positions as shown at Fig. l, and seed-box bottom in section. Fig. 4 is a top plan showing the slide as having made a .half throw toward left hand. Fig. 5 is a top plan hereinafter 55 described. Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation in the line x .fr in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by letters, the same letter indicating the same part in the several figures, A represents the bottom,with 6o discharge-opening a, and B the sides, (in section,) of an ordinary corn-planter seed-box.
C is a transverse barl of the frame ofthe planter.
D is the slide, formed .of side limbs or bars, d d, connected at their ends 'by bars c. As shown, the slide D is held in its path as it kis reciprocated by the sides B of the box and by a lug, a, which slides in a slot, a, in the bottom A. 7o
E is the seed-wheel, with series of holes c in a circle and radial lugs e on its periphery. As shown, the lugs e have a concave side, e", and a sloping side, e. The wheel E is j ournaled byastud, f, to and upon a disk,G, which is fixed to or projects above the bottom A, about the vertical thickness of the slide D, so that the lugs e project outwardly above the slide D.
lIhe foregoing parts described by letter con- 8o stitute parts of an ordinary planter, and may be constructed and adapted to operate as shown, or in any other desired manner which will permit of the application thereto of my improvement. The cap for covering the seed wheel and slide (except the path traversed by the seed-holes) is not shown in the drawings, but may be of any ordinary construction.
H H are pawls, one on each limb d d', located as shown, and each pivoted by a bolt, t', between standards i', which project from the slide D. The long ends h of the pawlsH H project in opposite directions, and their other ends, h, have each a spring, L, located between it and the slide D, which tends to raise said end, and thereby hold the other end, h', down to the slide-bar D with a yielding force.

At Fig. 1 the slide D is shown as having been moved a full throw toward the left-hand side of the seed-box, and in so doing the pawl and coincident with the discharge-hole a in' the bottomrA. As the slide D came to rest -after the throw just described, the lug J and one of the lugs e came in contact, as shown, and the motion of the seed-wheel was thereby arrested at the proper time to insure the coincidence of the seed-'hole e and the hole a. At the next movement of the slideD, or toward the right hand, the pawl H will act on a lug, e', to move the seed-wheel, and the stop J' act on another to arrest its motion, as shown at Fig. 2. When the pawl on either side of the seed-wheel is advancing, the retreating spring-pawl on its other side will yield and slide upward and over the lug e',which passes beneath it.' Gravitating pawls may be used instead of spring-pawls, if preferred.
In operation, especially when a check-row attachment is used, in planters as generally constructed, the slide D will sometimes only make a partial throw and then return, and at the next throw lock with the lugs of the seedwheel, or other diiiiculties occur. A partial throw of the seedslide, as last described, is shown at Fig. 4 as having been made toward the left hand, and at Fig. 5 the slide D is represented as having commenced its return from the position shown at Fig. 4 toward the right hand, and thereby brought the lug J' in contact with one of the lugs e', so that the complete return movement of the slide D toward the right hand willrestore the seed-wheel to its proper position, and ready for the proper action of the pawl H', as its slide moves toward the left hand at the next throw.
The pawls and the lugs on the seed-wheels may be constructed differently from what Ihave shown, and hence I do not limit my claim to the specific construction of these parts shown; but
WIhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a seed-wheel having seed-cups and radial lugs, and a slide having pawls adapted to impart an intermittent rotary motion to the seed-wheel; the lugs or stops J J', located on the slide and adapted to act as stops to arrest the motion of the seedwheels, and as pawls to reverse its movement when the slide is reversed or returned from a partial throw, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 2. `In combination with a seed-wheel having seed-holes and radial lugs, a slide with limbs located beneath said lugs, and provided with pawls adapted to impart an intermittent rotary` motion to the seed-wheel, and with lugs adapted to act as stops when the seed-wheel makes a complete movement, and to act as pawls when the slide returns after a partial throw, substantially as. and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination, the seed-Wheel havingseed-holes e', and slide D, having push-pawls H H and lugs J J', adapted to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In combination with the seed-wheel, and
slide having means for imparting an intermittent rotary motion to the seed-wheel, lugs located on the slide and adapted to arrest the motion-of the seed-wheel at the end of a full throw of the slide, and to return or reverse the motion of the seed-Wheel when the slide returns after a partial throw, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
