UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLPH S. HUNZEKER, OF PITTSBURG, PA., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WM. A. HERRON, RUFUS H. HERRON, AND WM. J. PATTERSON, ALL OF SAME PLACE.
SPRING AND BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,636, datedv September 11, 1883.
Application tiled December 21, 1882. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH STUWART 'HUNZEKER, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Springs and Spring-Braces; and I do hereby declare that the following is Ca full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, which willv enable others skilled in the art to which it 1o appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists of a brace for taking heavy strains from springs, and thus preventing them from being broken, and also transferring the weight from the middle of the axle toward the wheels, as will be fully understood from the following description and claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is 2o a side view of a double spring having my brace or bed-plate under the lower part of the spring. Fig. 2 represents a single spring attached to a cross-bar. Fig. 3 represents a double spring, with my brace both above and below the same. Fig. 4 is an end view of my brace for springs.
In the application of my spring-brace the center of the spring A may rest on a bolster, B, or on any other suitable support. The 3o same may be held in place by a clip, C, or
otherwise, as is well known t0 the trade.
In Fig. 1 the brace D is made sharp at one end, so as to iit under the spring A, while the center and shoulder or swell of the spring rests in part upon the bolster B.
In Fig. 3 amodified form of brace is shown, said brace extending to support or embrace both sides of the shoulder or swell of the spring instead of having a sharp end, as in Fig. l. 4o
The brace D is made with flanges d, which prevent the spring from sliding from its bed on the brace.
A chain, E, or other means may be used to fasten the brace in place.
It is intended that the brace shall come into action when a heavy load is put on the spring.
My b'races may be made of rubber, wood, metal, or any other suitable material.
Having described myinventiomwhat I claim is- The combination, with a spring, A, constructed substantially as shown, and the support 0r bolster B, of the flanged brace D d, for supporting the swell of the spring, and thus transfer the weight from the middle of the axle toward the wheels when supporting a heavy load, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. RUDOLPH SIUWART IIUNZEKER.
