ApplicationDecember 31, 195.6 ,=SerialtNo. 6313701 3 Claims-.---(Cl. 150 -28) The present invention relates to handbags or purses and more particularly to a novel cover for ladies fashion handbags.

The almost universal use of ladies handbags or purses is well known and because they are carried about and continually come into contact with other objects, hand bags are particularly susceptible to soiling and becoming worn. Since handbags are generally of non-washable material, they must be discarded after becoming soiled. Also, the worn handbag is of little value and is quickly discarded. It is to these and other disadvantages of conventional handbags that the present invention is directed.

Accordingly it is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved type of handbag.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a combination of a cover and a ladies handbag.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a cover for handbags which is made of a washable material.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a cover for ladies handbags which is of simple construction and which may be readily and conveniently slipped over a handbag.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a novel handbag and a cover therefor which is of an improved construction.

In accordance with the above and other objects, a handbag is provided which is made of an ovate-cylindrical body portion of semi-rigid material having an end member at the bottom end thereof. The upper end of the handbag body member terminates in two extensions which can be bent inwardly or toward each other to serve as upper flaps one over the other. Thus a handbag is provided which is of simple construction yet attractive in appearance. A cover member made of a washable material is made to fit over the handbag. The cover is also of an ovate-cylindrical contour closed at the bottom end. The upper end of the cover has two extensions or flaps similar to the handbag body member. Each of the side extensions on the cover has a piece of lining material on the inner side thereof and sewed along the upper edge of the cover so that, in effect, a pair of pockets are provided at the upper end of the cover member. These pockets conveniently fit over the flaps of the handbag and serve to maintain the cover in place in a snug fit around the handbag. Also, this construction provides a convenient arrangement for removing the cover.

13 and 14." A handle 15 issecured'at'each'end'to the'upper'corners of the handbag as shown in Fig. 1. It is readily seen that the handbag may be conveniently closed merely by bending flaps 13 and toward each other.

Because the handbag is susceptible to wear and soiling during its normal use, a cover member 16 is provided which will conveniently fit over the purse 11. The cover is preferably of a flexible cloth like material and comprises an ovate-cylindrical body portion 17 closed at the bottom by end member 18. The body portion 17 may be made of one piece of material sewed along a seam 19, or it may be made of two pieces of material sewed along two seams. The upper end of the cover 16 terminates in

21 and 22, each of which serves as one side of a pocket. An inner flap 23 is of the same size and contour of extension 21 and sewed along the upper edge 24 thereof so that a pocket 25 is formed. Similarly an inner flap 26 is sewed along the upper edge 27 of extension 22 to provide a pocket 28.

It is readily seen then that the cover member 16 may be conveniently slipped over the purse or handbag 10 and

25 and 28 respectively of the cover so that the cover is held snugly in place around the handbag. Thus, as the cover becomes worn or soiled during the normal use of the handbag it may be conveniently removed and either washed or replaced by another cover. Another advantage of the present invention is that a number of covers 16 of different colors or having different designs thereon may be provided. Thus if an owner desires to change the color or appearance of her handbag she need only slip off one cover and replace it by another cover of the desired appearance.

Though the present invention has been described by reference to a specific embodiment thereof it is understood that this is not to be considered as limiting the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A handbag comprising a body member of relatively rigid material, the upper end of the body member terminating in two flaps adapted to be bent over to close said handbag, a cover made of flexible material comprising a body member, the upper end of the cover body member terminating in two extensions of substantially the same size and shape of said handbag body member flaps, each of said extensions forming the outer side of a cover pocket, a cover flap secured along the edge thereof to each of said cover extensions whereby a pair of pockets are formed, said cover adapted to fit snugly over said handbag whereby each handbag flap is received within one of said cover pockets.

A handbag comprising a body member of rigid material, a flat end member secured along the outer edge thereof to the bottom of said handbag body member, the upper end of the body member terminating in two flaps adapted to be bent over to close said handbag, a cover made of flexible material comprising a body member, an end member secured along the outer edge thereof to the bottom of said cover body member, the upper end Patented" Aug. 5, 1958 of the cover body member terminating in two extensions of substantially the same size and shape of said handbag body member flaps, each of said extensions forming the outer side of a cover pocket, a cover flap secured along the edge thereof to each of said cover extensions whereby a pair of pockets are formed, said cover adapted to fit snugly over said handbag whereby each handbag flap is received within one of said cover pockets.

A handbag comprising an ovate-cylindrical body member of rigid material, a flat ovate end member secured along the outer edge thereof to the bottom 'of said handbag body member, the upper end of the body member terminating in two flaps adapted to be bent over to close the upper end of said handbag, a cover made of washable material comprising an ovate-cylindrical body 1 the upper end of the cover body member terminating in two extensions of substantially the same size and shape of said handbag body member flaps, each of said exten sions forming the outer side of a cover pocket, a cover flap secured along the edge thereof to each of said cover extensions whereby a pair of pockets are formed, said cover adapted to fit snugly over said handbag whereby each handbag flap is received within one of said cover pockets.
