Description

March 1954 F. VANDER HOEK REMOVABLE POUCH FOR HANDBAGS Filed Oct. 9, 1951 Patented Mar. 9, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE REMOVABLE POUCH FOR HANDBAGS Frances Vander Hoek, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application October 9, 1951, Serial No. 250,445
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an accessory for handbags and more particularly to a pouch adapted for removable insertion into a handbag to serve as a container for the entire contents of the handbag.
More frequently than not, a ladys handbag is the depository for a miscellany of articles which are considered indispensable and which are, for the most part, carried therein in haphazard fashion for want of a more suitable medium for their receipt and preservation. While ladies, in general, have become thoroughly accustomed to the practice of handling the contents of the handbag for general use, they are always bothered with the necessity of handling each of th individual items contained in the handbag when it is desired to transfer the contents from one handbag to another. The rather frequent change from the use of one handbag to another may be dictated by a change in wearing apparel or ma be desired in changing from day or business handbags to those for evening use or vice versa.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of a new and improved accessory for handbags which will greatly facilitate the transfer of the contents from one handbag to another without disturbing the contents of the bag or requiring the handling of the various individual items in effecting the transfer.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a new and improved accessory for handbags in the form of a receptacle, adapted for removable insertion into a handbag, to serve as a container for the entire contents of the handbag.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a new and improved accessory for handbags in the form of a pouch, adapted for removable insertion into a handbag, to serve as a container for the entire contents of the bag and to provide a device which will greatly prolong the life of the bag by reason of the fact that it saves wear and tear on the regular lining of the bag.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a new and improved accessory for handbags, in the form of a pouch adapted for removable insertion into a handbag, to serve as a container for the entire contents of the ba and to provide a device capable of being transferred from one handbag to another to effect the transfer of the entire contents without requiring the handling of the numerous items individually.
A more specific object of the invention resides in the provision of an open-mouthed pouch adapted for removable insertion into a handbag to serve as a container for the entire contents of the bag; the pouch being constructed in a manner to afford the various desired compartments for accommodating several of the sundry items to assist in maintaining the contents of the bag in a more orderly fashion.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description of an illustrative embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing:
. Figure 1 is a view in perspective of an accessory for handbags constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention showing the same in position within a handba which is illustrated in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the accessory, or pouch, shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the accessory, or open-mouthed pouch, showing the general arrangement of its interior which is provided with a plurality of pockets or compartments;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, showing the general arrangement of its several component parts;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view, taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2, showing the stitching for the seams which join the respective body and gusset portions of the pouch and its lining; and
Fig. 6 is a pattern view of the gusset piece of the pouch or its lining.
The accessory for handbags chosen for illustrative purposes in the accompanying drawing and embodying the teachings of the present invention comprises a pouch I0 adapted for removable insertion into a handbag to provide a receptacle or container for the entire contents of the bag. As will readily be understood, the material from which the pouch I0 is fabricated is of little significance; it may be made of leather, fabric or an other suitable material having the desired wear-resistant quality. Since the primary purpose of the invention is to provide an accessory for handbags which will facilitate the transfer of the entire contents from one handbag to another without disturbing or requiring the handling of the various individual articles in the bag, the most important feature of the invention lies in the provision of an openmouthed pouch having the necessary compartments arranged to contain the entire contents of the bag in an orderly fashion and afford a simple and effective means by which the contents of one bag may be transferred to another b the mere transfer of the accessory.
The accessory or pouch I0 comprises an envelop H and a lining 12 secured together along their marginal top edges by means of stitching 13 to provide an open-mouthed receptacle adapted for removable insertion into a handbag. The envelop H comprises a centrally disposed rectangular piece 14 and a pair of identically formed gusset pieces l5 (shaped substantially as indicated in Fig. 6), The envelop H is formed by attaching one of the gusset pieces l5 to each of the lateral edges of the central rectangular piece M by means of stitching 16. After the pieces have been sewed together, the envelop is turned inside out so that the raw edges of the seams are on the inside of the envelop. The lining I2 comprises a main central portion [7, an auxiliary central portion I8 and a pair of end gussets 19. The main central portion I! of the lining I2 is folded, stitched and fashioned in a manner to provide a large open central pouch portion and a pair of pockets on each side wall of the lining. The auxiliary portion l8 of the lining 12 forms a zipper closured compartment which is attached to the main portion ll of the lining. After the portions 11 and I8 have been formed and joined together, the end gussets 19 are sewed in place along the lateral side edges of the parts I! and [8 to complete the lining l2. With the envelop I l and lining [2 completed, the two are joined together by means of the stitching 13 along their top marginal edges to complete the formation of an open-mouthed receptacle adapted to serve as a container for the entire contents of the bag and one which may be readily transferred from one bag to another.
In function and use the accessory of the present invention serves a real and long felt need. While its outstanding advantage lies in the provision of a device which may readily be inserted into a handbag or transferred from one bag to another to effect the unitary transfer of the contents of the handbag without bother or inconvenience; it has numerous other advantages among which are the added convenience of always having the assurance that some of the desired articles were not inadvertently left in a previously used bag and furthermore that the use of the present device greatly extends the life of iii) 4 the handbag by virtually eliminating wear on the lining of the bag.
While the invention has been described in considerable detail in the foregoing specification, it should be noted that the accessory provides a simple, effective and efiicient means for containing the entire contents of the handbag and provides a device which may be removably inserted into any bag of the users choice with assurance that the selected bag will contain all of the de sired articles without requiring the individual selection or handling of the items in effecting their transfer from one bag to another.
It is also to be understood that various changes may be made in the actual physical embodiment of the invention, as shown in the accompanying drawing without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages hereinafter claimed.
.1 claim:
1. An accessory for handbags comprising an open-mouthed pouch for removable insertion into a handbag to serve as a container for the entire contents of the handbag, said open-mouthed pouch including a substantially rectangular central body portion forming an outer covering, a
lining including pockets on its inner surface, and a pair of wedge-shaped end gussets having their greatest lateral dimension along their top marginal edges, stitching joining the top marginal edges of said outer covering and lining, and stitching joining the lateral marginal edges of said outer covering and lining and lateral and bottom marginal edges of said gussets to form an open-mouthed pouch having an unobstructed central portion and pocketed side portions for the selective receipt and segregation of the separate items of the contents of the handbag whereby the entire contents of the open-mouthed pouch may be transferred from one handbag to another without requiring the individual handling of the separate items contained therein.
