Description

y 1958 I A. SAVINELLI CIGARETTE-HOLDER WITH DENICOTINIZING FILTER WITH DOUBLE EJECTOR Filed March 17, 1954 United States Patent CIGARETTE-HOLDER WITH DENICOTINIZING FILTER WITH DOUBLE EJECTOR Achille Savinelli, Milan, Italy Application March 17, 1954, Serial No. 416,819
1 Claim. (Cl. 131-182) This invention relates to cigarette holders which utilize cartridges for filtering cigarette smoke.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved cigarette holder which enables the ejection of the remains of a cigarette and also the ejection of used cartridges.
To achieve the above objects, the invention contemplates the provision of a cigarette holder wherein a mouthpiece is movable within a hollow body made of two separable parts. The invention provides for accommodating a cartridge in such relationship to the mouthpiece that it is capable, on the one hand, of ejecting a cigarette butt and, on the other hand, of being ejected by the movement of the associated mouthpiece whereby no contact need be made with either the cigarette or the cartridge to effect an ejection of the same.
The invention will be explained in greater detail with reference to a preferred embodiment thereof and the annexed drawing in which the sole figure is a partial axial section of a cigarette holder provided in accordance with the invention.
The cigarette holder shown in the drawing comprises a mouthpiece 1 and a body comprising first and second cylindrical tubular body sections 2, 2a having ends correspondingly threaded for mutual endwise engagement and being arranged substantially coaxially relative to a passage 3 provided in the mouthpiece 1 for the inhalation of smoke.
The cigarette holder further comprises a cartridge seat 4 having a threaded spindle 4 which is threadably engaged in a corresponding recess in the mouthpiece 1. It will be noted that the inner surface or profile of the seat 4 is so shaped as to accommodate an extreme of a filter cartridge. Moreover, it will be noted that the member 2 is provided with an inwardly directed abutment at its lowermost extreme whereby a disengagement of the mouthpiece 1 is prevented.
At the upper end of member 2' is also provided an inwardly directed abutment against which comes to rest in its normal position a cigarette seating member 5 which is frictionally engaged within the member 2. The member 5 is provided with a central aperture of sufficiently small diameter as to prevent the passage of a flange 6 of an ejector member 7 which is hollow to permit the passage of smoke.
Between the cartridge seat 4 and a second flange on the extreme of the ejector 7 is positioned a cartridge 8. A spring 9 wound around the ejector 7 is compressed by the seating of the cartridge 8 and consequently functions both to retain the cartridge 8 solidly in its seat and to maintain the cigarette seating member firmly against the abutment of the tubular section 2'. 7
It is to be noted that the tubular section 2 has a length substantially equal to that of the cartridge 8 and that the mouthpiece 1 has its inner end slidably mounted within section 2 for movement between the extremities thereof, the mouthpiece having its inner end normally adjacent the abutment of section 2 so that any movement of the mouthpiece into section 2 will effect a displacement of the cartridge 8.
With the section 2 engaged with the section 2, a movement of the cartridge 8 will operate through ejector 7 and flange 6 to eject a cigarette or its remains from the seating member 5.
It is also to be noted that the cartridge seat 4 extends upwardly along the cartridge 8 for a very short distance which, for example, is less than half the length of this cartridge. As a consequence, with section 2' removed from section 2 and with displacement of the mouthpiece 1 into section 2, the cartridge 8 is displaced from within the body of the holder and is thus automatically removed therefrom without need for contact with the cartridge, which when used, is generally coated with tars and similar disagreeable substances.
It is also of interest to note that the flanges of the ejector 7 prevent a disengagement between the ejector 7 and the cigarette seating member 5 so that with no cartridge in the holder, the member 7 is nevertheless held in readiness for operation.
As has been noted above, a cigarette holder is provided in accordance with the'invention which provides for the automatic ejection of both a cigarette or its remains and a cartridge.
There will now be obvious to those skilled in the art many modifications of the structure set forth which do not depart from the spirit of the invention as defined in the following claim.
What is claimed is:
A cigarette holder having a cartridge for a filter and comprising a mouthpiece, first and second cylindrical tubular body sections having ends correspondingly threaded for mutual endwise engagement, said first and second sections having their opposite ends provided with inwardly directed abutments, said first section having a length substantially equal to thatof the cartridge, said mouthpiece having an inner end slidably mounted within said first section for movement between its extremities and limited in movement by the abutment of said first section to prevent disengagement in one direction therefrom, said mouthpiece having its inner end normally adjacent the abutment of the first section, a cartridge seat having a length of less than one half the length of said first section and being detachably engaged in said mouthpiece for engaging one extreme end of the cartridge and supporting the cartridge in such a manner that the same extends slightly out of said first section when said monthpiece is in the normal position, a cigarette seating member frictionally engaged in said second section and defining an aperture substantially coaxial with the cylindrical sections, an elongated ejector extending through the aperture and including flanged ends to avoid disengagement from said cigarette seating member, said ejector being adapted to engage by means of one of its flanges a cartridge positioned in said first section and seated in said cartridge seat, and a spring on said ejector intermediate said cigarette seating member and said one flange to urge said cigarette seating member against the abutment in said second section and to urge said one flange against the cartridge to position the same firmly in its seat whereby the movement of said mouthpiece operating through said cartridge and ejector may serve to eject a cigarette and, with said second section removed, to eject the cartridge.
