2 Claims. (Cl. 24-66) This invention relates to fastening means, and more particularly to a paper clip whereby a number of sheets of paper may be secured together.

One object of the invention is to provide a paper clip of the above nature, which may be attached to the corners of a plurality of sheets, so as to maintain them in alignment with each other.

Another object of the invention is to provide a paper clip of the above nature which embraces one corner of the group of sheets to be secured, and wherein a portion of each of the sheets is folded inwardly to prevent them from becoming separated.

A further object of the invention is to provide a paper clip of the above nature having a slotted opening into which the corners of the papers are inserted and wherein means is provided for guiding the papers into said slot.

A further object is to provide a paper clip of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance and very efiicient and durable in use.

With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing, one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.

Fig. 5 is a plan view of the paper clip, on a somewhat reduced scale, showing the first step in attaching the sheets together.

Fig. 6 is a view, similar to Fig. 5, showing the corners of the sheets after they have been turned over.

Fig. 7 is a cross-section taken on line 7--7 of Fig. 6.

Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates a. metal blank stamped or punched out prior to forming the paper clip and which comprises a bottom strip 11 and a top strip 12 extending at right angles to the bottom strip, and joined thereto by a spacer 13 disposed at an angle of 45 degrees with respect to each of the bottom and top strips 11 and 12.

The free edges of each of the strips 11 and 12 are also provided with

14 and 15 respectively, each of which is disposed at an angle of 45 degrees with respect to the strip with which it is incorporated and at right angles to the first spacer 13.

Extending from the lower edge of the strip 11 is a curved guide tab 16 and extending upwardly from the center of the strip 11 there is a lip 17.

In order to strengthen the members 11 and 12 they may be provided with longitudinally extending

concave ribs

18 and 19 respectively.

The lip 17 may be strengthened by cupping it slightly as at 20 to form a concave dished portion, and inasmuch as this lip is intended to be bent forwardly over the papers, in use, it may be desirable to form a rib 21 on said lip where it joins the member 11.

In forming the completed paper clip, the

14 and 15 will be bent upwardly along the dotted lines 14a and 15a, at right angles to their respective strips 11 and 12.

The strips 11 and 12 are then bent toward each other about the respective dotted lines 13a and 13b, so as to place them in parallel relationship, with the spacer 13 extending at right angles between them, at one end, and with the overlapped

14 and 15 separating said strips at the other end, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The paper clip is now ready for use. This construction will avoid side movement of the strips 11 and 12, without requiring soldering them together.

Operation In operation, a plurality of sheets of paper 22 which it is desired to clip together, may be secured by introducing one corner 23 of the stack of sheets 22 into the space between the strips 11 and 12. It will be found that the guide tab 16 will be of material assistance in accomplishing this insertion, as it will only be necessary to press the corner of the sheets down against the guide tab 16 prior to introducing them between the strips 11 and 12.

After the sheets of paper 22 have been inserted in the clip in the position shown in Fig. 5, with the spacers 13 at one edge and

14 and 15 adjacent the other edge, the lip 17 may be bent forwardly over the corners into abutment with the top of the upper strip 12 as shown in Fig. 6. The

13, 14, 15 insure accurate alignment of the sheets 22 when the clip is closed upon them.

Preferably the clip 10 will be made of malleable metal, in which case after the lip 17 has been bent down over the corner 23, it will remain in that position, and will effectively prevent the sheets 22 from becoming thereafter separated from each other. One or more of the sheets 22 may be removed from the clip by bending the lip 17 back into its original position, and depending on the type of material employed, it will be possible to use a clip end over again.

While there has been disclosed in this specification, one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other equivalent forms, without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired. to secure Letters Patent is:

1. A paper fastener comprising a pair of parallel metal strips adapted to extend diagonally about the corner of a plurality of paper sheets to be fastened together, a spacer portion joining said strips at one end extending at right angles to the planes of said] strips and disposed at an oblique angle with respect to the lengths of said strips, one of said strips being provided at its lower side with a downwardly extending guide tab, and having a lip at its opposite upper side extending upwardly and adapted to bend the corners of said sheets down upon said clip.
