(Cl. 135-35) This invention relates to umbrellas of the type having transparent inserts providing windows in the material and between the ribs thereof, and in particular an umbrella having an insert of transparent material positioned between all of the ribs and having a continuous shield piving transparent sections in umbrellas to permit vision in inclement weather, however, in a hard driving or freezing rain when it is found necessary to hold the umbrella down over the face it is substantially impossible to see through the window sections. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates an umbrella having transparent sections providing windows therein in which an outer shield or skirt is provided to cover the transparent section so that vision is not interrupted, by rain, sleet or like.

The object of this invention is, therefore, toprovide means for mounting at protecting shield over windows through the wall of an umbrella to prevent vision through the windows being obstructed in a heavy rain or in sleet or the like.

Another object of the invention to provide a protective shield over transparent sections, of an umbrella in which the transparent sections and protecting shield permit folding of the umbrella.

A further object of the invention is to provide an umbrella having transparent sections providing windows in the material thereof and a protecting shield covering said transparent sections in which the umbrella is of a simple and economical construction.

With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies an umbrella having a handle with folding ribs and a conventional cover in which transparent sections are provided in the cover and in which an overhanging protecting shield is mounted on the umbrella and positioned to extend over the transparent sections.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the improved clear vision umbrella with a protecting shield mounted on the umbrella and extended outwardly over the transparent sections therein.

Figure 3 is a vertical section through the umbrella shown in Figs. 1 and 2 also showing the protecting shield extended and showing braces for retaining the shield in an outwardly extended position.

Figure 4 is a vertical section showing a portion of the umbrella with the parts shown on an enlarged scale and showing, in particular a protecting shield pivotally mounted on one of the ribs of the umbrella and folded to a nested position over a transparent window of, the umbrella.

Figure 5 is a section through a portion of the umbrella, with the parts as shown in Fig. 3, and with the parts on an enlarged scale illustrating the mounting of a protecting shield over a window in the cover of the umbrella.

Figure 6 is a vertical section through the upper portion of the umbrella showing the mounting of the conventional ribs for holding the umbrella cover and also a mounting of auxiliary ribs for actuating the protecting shield and for retaining the protecting shield in an outwardly extended position.

Figure 7 is a view looking upwardly showing a section through the stem of the umbrella and taken on line 7--7 of Fig. 6, also showing the mounting of the ribs of the umbrella on the stem or handle.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved protecting shield for windows of umbrellas of this invention includes an annular strip of material 10 carried by arms 11 having U-shaped inner ends, the inner ends being pivotally mounted by pins 12 on ribs 13 of an umbrella having a covering 14, and sections 15 vof the inner ends being pivotally connected with pins 16 to arms 17 pivotally mounted in cars 18 on a sliding collar 19 positioned on the handle 20 of the umbrella and, as illustrated in Fig. 3 the shield 10 is adapted to extend outwardly over transparent sections 21 providing windows in the cover 14 and positioned between the ribs 13.

As illustrated in Fig. 2 the protective shield includes a plurality of trapezoidal sections, joined on the ribs of the umbrella and positioned with upper edges thereof connected to the material or cover 14 with stitches 23 and with the ribs 11 positioned on the conventional ribs of the umbrella. As shown in Fig. 5 springs 22 urge the protecting shield outwardly to the extended position with the umbrella in the open position. With the inner section 15 of the U-shaped portions of the arms 10 connected to the rods 17, the protecting shield is adapted to fold to a nested position over the transparent sections 2?. as the collar 19 slides downwardly on the handle and as the collar slides upwardly, with the umbrella in the open position the sections of the shield 10 extend outwardly as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. 7

With the sections of the protecting shield provided and mounted as illustrated and described the shield is actuated, somewhat similar to the umbrella with the rods 17 on the sliding collar 19 drawing the sections of the shield to closed positions as the umbrella is closed, as illustrated in Fig. 4, wherein the collar 19 sliding downwardly upon the handle 20 draws the inner ends or sections 15 inwardly from the position shown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Fig. 4 whereby the shield is drawn to a closed position over the windows 21.' It will also be noted that with the cover of the umbrella extended, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the collar 19 may be drawn downwardly to close the windows with the rod 17 drawing the sections 15 downwardly wherein the sections forming the protecting shield 10 are drawn downwardly against the outer surfaces of the sections of transparent 'mate'rial. opened and closed as desired.

In an umbrella, the combination which comprises a handle, a plurality of ribs pivotally mounted on the handle and positioned to eiitend therefrom, a cover having openings therethrough mounted on the ribs, panels of transparent material mounted in the cover and positioned over each of the openings thereof, a continuous protecting shield having upper and lower edges positioned with the upper edge connected to the cover, ribs having U-shaped ends with long outer arms and short inner shield'and with theshort-arms'extended inside of the umbrella, means pivotally mounting the U-shaped ends of the ribs on ribs of the umbrella, and rods pivotally connected to the short arms of the ribs of the shield, and positioned with the opposite ends connected to a collar slidably mounted on the handle of the umbrella.
