S. C. SMITH WINDOW SHADE Filed May 20, 1937 grwc wfm 554/089 0 SM/777:
Patented Sept. 27, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WINDOW SHADE Senora O. Smith, Hamburg, Pa. Application May 20, 1937, Serial No. 143,787
1 Claim. (Cl. 156-10) This invention relates to a window shade, and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a shade which is adapted to be disposed over a light opening and wherein means are provided for detachably securing the shade to the window frame.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a shade of this kind which may be entirely removed when desired or which, when preferred, can have a portion released to effect only a partial shade for the window light.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shade of this kind which can be readily made from canvas, twill or other lightweight fabric and wherein means are provided for detachably securing the shade in desired position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved window shade whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating a shade constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position, the shade being partially open;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in elevation ofthe lower free corner portion of the shade and associated frame with said corner portion of the shade un-- attached.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, my improved shade is shown of a type or style to be applied to a window of an automobile but it is to be understood that it is my purpose to provide shades embodying the features of the present invention which can be applied with equal facility and to the same advantage upon other kinds of windows.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, F denotes a window frame defining a central light which, as shown in the drawing, has disposed thereover a pane I of glass. This frame F tions or members of and pane I may be of any design preferred and can be constructed as desir Suitably secured to and extending along the rear faces of the upper one end and bottom porthe frame F, as indicated at 2, is a flexible member 3 Ma width to overlie and extend across the outer faces of said portions or members as is particularly illustrated in Figure 2. The outer or free marginal portion of this strip 3 is provided with a series of devices 4 1 to interlock in a conventional manner with complemental locking devices 5 arranged along marginal portions 'of the shade B. As disclosed in' the drawing, however, one end of the shade S is free of the devices 5 as is the associated end portion or member of the frame F.
Coacting with the devices 4 and 5 is an operator or slider 6 operating in a well known manner to effect desired interlocking of the devices 4 and 5 upon movement of 6 in one direction and Permitting release 'between the members 4 and 5 when the operator or slider 6 is moved in the opposite direction. The slider 6 can be moved entirely free of the shade S so that when desired said shade may be entirely removed or, as is particularly illustrated in Figure 1, the operator or slider 6 may be' moved or adjusted to a desired position to allow a corner portion of the shade S to drop down whenit is desired to effect only a partial shading of the light of the frame F.
The shade S may be made out of any desired fabric such as twill or canvas, said fabric being, however, preferably of a light weight which permits it to be readily folded when removed for storage in one of the pockets generally provided in the body of an automobile or otherwise as may be preferred.
When the shade S is connected to the frame F to entirely close the light through the frame F,.or 40 if a free upper corner portion is partially open as illustrated in Figure 1, it will be noted that the shade S will coact with the pane I within the frame F to provide a pocket which, if desired, can be used to temporarily hold small articles although of course this is only an incidental feature.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a window shade constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing the operator or slider from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:-
In combination with a frame for an automobile, window, a relatively narrow flexible strip secured to and extending along the inner faces of 10 three sides of said frame and freely extending across and beyond the outer edge faces of said sides of the frame, a shade member, interengaging locking devices carried by the projecting edge of said strip and three sides of said shade, and a. slider for said locking devices movable from an upper locked position to a lower released position whereby a predetermined fragmentary portion of said shade may be folded downwardly to released and opened position. v
