4 Claims. (Cl. 194-92) This invention relates to a coin or token controlled device for actuating a closure member such as are used on lockers and the like whereby, upon payment of an indicated amount, access to the interior of the locker through actuation of the closure member can be obtained. s
The primary object o f the present invention resides in the provision of a coin controlled device in which the number of coins necessary to be inserted to open a locker can be easily controlled by the utilization of movable slug members which are held in a position so as to be retained against unauthorized removal.
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a coin controlled device which employs a key of any suitable shape which mustbe inserted before the device can be actuated.
An additional feature of the invention lies in the novel These, together with the various ancillary objects and Y features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this invention, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way lof example only, wherein:

Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional detail view as taken along the plane of line 3--3 of Figure l illustrating the construction lof the slide and guide;
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional detail view as taken along the plane of line 4-4 of Figure l illustrating the construction of the lslide and guide with a slug positioned in place;
Figure 5 is a partial plan view showing the device with the slide in a closed position, and with parts of the device being broken away to show other parts in section for greater detail;
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional detail view as taken along the plane of line 6-6 in Figure 1; and
Figure 7 is a side elevational View of a locker employ ing the present invention.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar part-s throughout the various views, the reference numeral 10 is used to generally designate a locker which is adapted ICC to employ the actuation device 12 comprising the present invention. The locker 10 may be formed yof any suitable material and may be arranged with others of similar construction in vvertically stacked piers antlv in suitable rows thereof as may be desired. Tne locker 10 is pro vided with an opening closed by a front door 14 having a handle 16. The door is hingedat its lower edge as at 18 and permits entry into the central recess 20 thereof in which various articles of-clothing, merchandise, and
the like may be stored. A partition 22 is provided in the locker 10 and separates the actuation mechanism 12 from the main recess 20. Y
Secured to the front wall 24 of the locker 10 is a deten support 26 having a detent 28 vertically slidablyr mounted therein and restrained in its movement by means of a fastener 30 which extends through a threaded bore 32 in the detent holder 26 and engages in a slot 34 lin the detent 28. The detent 28V has a portion 36 of reduced crosssectional area forming a stud and also forming a shoulder 38 against which a coil spring 40 bears, the coil spring 40 also bearing against the surface 42 ofthe partition 22. The stud 36` extends through an aperture 44 in the partition 22 and also through an aperture 46 in aY latch member 48 carried by Vthe door 14. Hence, when the detent'28 is held in a depressed position withthe stud 36 extending through the latch member 48, it is not-possible to open the door 14. e
In order to hold the detent 28 in a depressed position, there' is provided a control lever 50 which Vis pivotally .mounted as at 5,2 on a bracket 54 attached to the side 'wall56 of the locker 10.
The lever 50 has a cam 57 on the end thereof engageable by an element 200 on a slide 58 slidablymounted in a guide 60, the guide 60 being secured in the front wall 24 `of the locker and extending through 'a suitable opening formed'therein.
The guide 60 is `of substantially channel shape, see Figures 3 and 4, and includes a bottom 62 havingV sides 64 and 66 rising therefrom. Extending Yinwardly towards each other from the upper portions of the sides 64 'and 66 are flanges 68 and 70 which-'form in conjunction with the slide 58 a comparatively closefiit.k
The slide 58 is provided withaplurality of apertures as at 72, 74, 76 and 78 therethrough. A ls'o, vthere is formed in the slide 60 suitable recesses as at 80,52, 84, 86, 88, 'and 92, 94 which communicate with the apertures formed in the slide; The apertures l'72, 74, 76 and 78 are designed to receive coins or tokens therein and it is noted that slugs, as at 96, can bepositioned in the apertures and associated recesses'when the, slide is in its actuated and inner position in a manner so that because of the overlying position of theanges- 68 yand 70, it is not possible to remove the slugs from the slide, thus preventing the insertion of coins in those particular apertures with which the slugs are associa/ted.V
A further aperture having associated recesses 10 and 104 is provided in the slide 58 for reception of a key casing 106 having a suitable opening 108 therein for receiving a key 110 of any desired conguration. Because of the removability of the casing 106, the shape of the key for the locker can be changed as may be desired.
An operating handle 112 may be provided for the slide 58.
Mounted on a shaft 114 carried by table studs 116 is akeeper 118 forming stop means for preventing actuation of the slide 58 unless either coins, tokens or slugs are in position, as well as the key 110. The stop means 118 includes a projecting portion 112 that is designed to slide over the key, coins and slugs when they are in position but to abut against the inner peripheral surfaces defined by the respective apertures such as the surface 120, see Figure 2, when the coins or slugs are not in position.

A coin controlled device for actuating closure means comprising a channel-shaped guide, said guide including a bottom plate having upwardly extending sides, flanges extending inwardly towards each other from the upper part of said sides, a slide movably positioned in said guide, said slide having a plurality of apertures therethrough, said slide having recesses therein communicating with said apertures, said flanges overlying said recesses, a casing received in .one of said apertures and the recesses communicating therewith, said anges overlying Vsaid casing, an opening in said casing, and a key receivable Iin said opening, a pivotally mounted control lever, a closure detent, said control lever being engageable with said closure detent, said slide being engageable with said control lever.

A coin controlled device for actuating closure means comprising a channel-shaped guide, said guide including a bottom plate having upwardly extending sides, anges extending inwardly towards each other from the upper part of said sides, a slide movably positioned in said guide, said slide having a plurality of aperturesl therethrough, said slide having recesses therein communicating with said apertures, said anges overlying said recesses, a casing received in one of said apertures and the recesses communicating therewith, said flanges overlying said casing, an opening in said casing, and a key receivable in saidopening, a pivotally mounted control lever, a closure detent, said control lever being engageable with said closure detent, said slide being engageable with said control lever, and stop means engageable with said slide for limiting movementof saidslide in said guide unless said aperturehas been filled.
