SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,931, dated August 28, 1883.
Application filed June 13, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALLEN W. Swlr'r, of Elmira, in the county of Ohemung, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lubricators, of which the following, taken in connection with the ac companying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of lubricators which are designed chiefly for lubricating the valves and cylinders of steam-engines, and are rendered automatic in their operation by a gradual admission of water to the interior of the lubricant-cup, displacing therein a corresponding quantity of the lubricant, and forc ing the same through the lubricant-duct to the st eampipe, which latter carries the lubricant to the steam-chest and cylinder of the engine.
The object of my present invention is to provide a lubricator which shall be simple and less expensive in construction, and in some respects more efficient in its operation than those hitherto introduced to the trade; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of its I of the lubricant-cup.

The invention is fully illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of the lubricator and its connection with the steam-pipe, and Fig. 2 illustrates modifications of the details of its construction.

munieating with the aforesaid channel of the bolt 0, serves to draw off the surplus water in the cup A. To the top of the cap D is rigidly secured an arm, B, the free end of which is adapted to be connected to the steam-supply pipe S of the engine, and thus sustains the lubricator in its position.
Longitudinally through the supporting-arm B is extended the usual oil channel or duct, a, which communicates at one end with the steampipe S, and at the opposite end with the top portion of the interior of the lubricant-cup. The arm B is also provided with a short horizontal steam-chann el b, in the end, which taps the steanrpipe S, and with a vertical steamchannel, I)", extending through the opposite end of said arm in range with the center of the coupling-bolt G. Said channels I) and b are connected by a tube, 1), the intermediate portion of which is deflected and isolated from the arm 13, and thus surrounded by the external air, and is formed of thin metal, so as to more effectually expose to the cooling influence ofthe surrounding air the steam which enters said tube, thereby making the tube I) serve as a condenser of the steam, which enters from the steam-pipe S through the tube 6, and passes in a condensed state into the vertical duct 12 The upper extremity of the bolt 0 is provided with a central channel, b, which communicates at its upper end with the channel 11 and at its lower end with a lateral tube, a, inserted in the side of the hollow portion of the bolt. Said tube 0 is extended to the observation- 8 5 port 1', and terminates in proximity to the inner face of the glass cover of said port. The extremity of the tube 0, I prefer to provide with a highly-polished face, it, which, by its reflection of the light admitted through the glass of the port 4', renders the influx of condensed steam to the interior of the cup A more conspicuous, as specified in my prior patent of March 21, 1882. I do not, however, limit my present invention to any particular form 5 of the end or face of the water-tube c, as it may be either at right angles to the axis of the tube, as shown in Fig. 1 of the annexed drawings, or beveled or oblique to the axis of the tube, or inclined toward the glass plate in front of it, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. My invention therefore embraces the feature of the water-tube c with an inclined end or face as well as with any other suitable face, in combination with the metallic cup having a trans parent observation-port in front of said tube.
The lubricant is introduced in the cup A through a suitable inlet at the upper portion thereof,which inlet is provided with a screwstopper, H. The water which enters the lulbricant-cup A through the ducts 2), b b and-c descends to the bottom of the cup and displaces a corresponding quantity of oil,which is caused to ascend and pass through the duct to into the steam-pipe S, and thence to the steam-chest valve and cylinder of the engine,
where it becomes distributed over the valveseat. The ingress of water and egress of oil are controlled by suitable valves applied to the respective ducts or passages.
Having described my improvements, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a lubricator, of a tube extended from a steam-passage or steamspace to the lubricant-cup, and having its intermediate portion deflected and isolated, to form by its exposure to the air a condenser of the steam passing through it, substantially as set forth. I
2. The combination, with a lubricant-cup, of a lubricant-duct and a direct steam-duct, having in common one connection with the steam-pipe of the engine, and the intermediate portions of their lengths isolated from each 1 other, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combinatiomwith the lubricant-cup A, of the supporting-arm B, provided with the lubricantduct a, and with the short steamduct Z) and vertical duct 22 respectively, at opposite ends, and the'tube b, deflected and isolated from the arm 13, and intersecting the ducts b and b substantially as'shown and described.
4. The combination, with the cup A and steam-condensing ducts b b If, of the coupling-bolt 0, provided with the central channel, b and the tube 0, inserted in the side of the hollow portion of the bolt, substantially as described and shown.
5. In combination with the steam-condensing duct and its horizontal extension 0, the lubricant-cup composed of, metal and provided in front of the duct-extension c with an observation-port, 1', covered with a transparent plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In combination with the oil-cup of a lubricator, the port 0', covered by a glass plate, and the pipe or tube 0, having an inclined end or face, substantially as set forth.
