LUBRIGATINGOIL CUP. 110.257,611. Patented May 9,1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. RAMSEY, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE'HALF TO AUGUST TEGELER, OF SAME PLACE.
LUBRICATING OIL-CUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,611, dated May 9, 1882.
Application filed November 1, 1880.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM W. RAMSEY, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State ot' Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lubricating` Oil- Cups, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in lubricatn g oil-cups, as hereinafter described and speciicall y claimed.
My invention pertains to that class ot1 lubri cators which are attached to the supply-pipe ot a steam-en gine, and by which the oil is automatically fed into thepsteam, and is thereby conveyed to the valves aiid piston `ot" the engine.
The accompanying drawings are made apart of my speciiication, in which like letters of ret'- erence designate like parts.
Figure l is a front elevation of the lubricating oilcup. Fig. 2 is a crosssection on the line :v rv, Fig. l. Fig. 3-is a central longitudinal section of the same.
A represent-s a cylindrical vessel serving as a reservoir for the oil. B is a. glass tube, sup ported at the top and bottom by pipes attached to the side of the reservoir, and through which the oil is supplied to` the same, and within which the amount ot' oil is discovered in the same. The nut H closes the oritice at the top and the plug I closes the orifice at the bottom of the glasstnbe, and through the latter the oil is withdrawn from the reservoirl To the top ot` the reservoir is attached the stop-cock T, used to give vent while filling or drawing oft' the contents. To the lower end ofthe reservoir is screwed the part O, the left end of which supports the stop-cock K andthe right end the glass tube Gand plug P. At the center of the part O is attached the oil-tube'S,
which extends to near the top of the reservoir, and is centrally situated `relative to said reservoir. The oritice of this tube is continuous to the plug, and that portion within the part O is closed by the stopcock K, which serves the double purpose of arresting the iiow of oil if the visible feedtube becomes broken and regulates the ow of the oil to the steam-pipe.'
plug- (No model.)
end supports the stop-cock J, which closes the orifice U, the office being to close this orifice only when either ot' the glass tubes breaks. The
pipe-extension G' terminates in a thread, by
which attachment is made to the induction steam-pipe ot' an engine. Of this extension a part extends downward to embrace the upper end ot' the visible feed-tube. At a right angle to this part is a rear extension, which supports the stop-cock M. This stop cock closes the orifice leading to the visible feed-tube C, and is used to prevent the escape ot' steam while filling and in case ot breakage.
The steampipes E and F screw into the part G, and the orifice in said part is continuous from the end ot' one to thc other. The outer end of the pipe F turns up to prevent the oil being carried into the condensing-chamber D.
The operation is thus described: The stopcocks J and M being closed, the reservoir A is iilled with oil. These cocks are now opened. The steam entering the condensing-chamber D, water forms therein, and liowing into the reservoir causes the oil to liow into the oil-tubo C, thence to collect in drops on the point of the plug P, and thence ascend in drops through the visible feed-tube 0,10 enter the pipe-extensioh G and be carried to the valve and piston of a. steam-engine to effect their lubrication.
Having fully described my invention, whatv I desire to secure by Letters Patent is The herein-described steam-actuated lubricator, consisting ot' the metal oil-receptacle A and steam-condensing chamber D, from which steam-pipe connection E F extends, the glass indicator-tubes B and G, arranged at the side of the oil-receptacle, with which they are connected, the pipes R, S, O, and G', having connecting-ducts, as specilied, and the valves J K M, located as shown, the whole being constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner set forth.
WILLIAM W. RAMSEY.
