1 Claim. (Cl. 12S-28S) 'Ihis invention relates to baby panties.

Many garments for babies and small children have heretofore been proposed having an outer bifurcated garment with a waterproof lining but none of these has proven wholly satisfactory.

It is the principal object of the present invention to provide baby panties comprising an outer garment of textile fabric and an inner waterproof lining and in which the inner and outer components are combined in an improved manner.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide baby panties having an improved crotch construction.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide baby panties having inner and outer components, the outer component being made of exible relatively inelastic material, and of a predetermined size, and the inner garment having expansible leg openings to accommodate the leg of the child using the garment.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide baby panties suitable for training use which are of attractive appearance and with Which a suitable measure of protection is available.

Other objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims.

The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevational view of baby panties in accordance with the present invention, parts being broken away in order to show the details of construction;

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the garment shown in Fig. l;

Pig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevational view showing the crotch of the panty in partly opened condition; and

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken approximately on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.

It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawings herein are illustrative merely, and that various modications and changes can be made in the structure disclosed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.

The baby panty, in accordance with the present invention, preferably include an outer bifurcated garment portion and an inner bifurcated garment portion 11, suitably united as hereinafter explained.

The outer garment portion 10 can be of any desired exible relatively inelastic material and is preferably of washable textile fabric, woven or knitted, as desired, one suitable material being corduroy.

The inner garment portion 11 can be made of any desired flexible but not necessarily elastic sheet or web material, preferably waterproof, and for this purpose sheet rubber, natural or synthetic, synthetic plastic sheet material or resin impregnated textile fabric, of suitable strength, is preferably employed.

The outer garment portion 10 preferably includes a 2,839,1)58 Patented June 17, 1958 ICC 2 pair of similar front panel sections 13 and 14 connected along a front central vertical line of stitches at 15. A front waist band portion 16 extends along the top of the front panel sections 13 and 14 and is secured thereto along a line of stitches at 17.

One of the front panel sections, such as the panel section 13 may have a simulated pocket flap 18 secured thereto along the line of stitches at 17, with a button 19 secured thereto and to the panel section 13.

The outer garment portion 10 preferably also includes a pair of similar rear panel sections 20 and 21, which are joined to each other along a central vertical line of stitches 22. The rear panel sections 20 and 21 are joined to the front panel sections 13 and 14 along lines of stitches 23 and 24. Extending from the line of stitches at 23 to the line of stitches at 24, and along the upper margins of the rear panel sections 20 and 21, gathered along their upper part, a piece of elastic webbing 25, or the like, is preferably provided to resiliently urge the upper part of the rear panel sections 20 and 21 to gathered condition thereby to aid in holding the garment in position on the child.

The outer garment 10, heretofore described, is substantially conventional, with a waist opening at 26 and leg openings at 27 and 28.

The front panel sections 13 and 14 at their lower central marginal portions have an inwardly disposed upwardly facing transverse tab 29 which is preferably provided with a relatively inelastic strip of tape 30 or the like to which separable fastener elements 31 are secured.

The rear panel sections 20 and 21 at their lower central marginal portions have an outwardly disposed downwardly facing transverse tab 32 which is provided with a relatively inelastic strip of tape 33 or the like to which separable fastener elements 34 complemental to and engageable with the fastener elements 31 are secured for permitting opening, and closing, of the crotch as desired.

The outer garment portion 10 has the inner garment portion 11 completely contained therein. The inner garment portion 11 preferably comprises a front panel section 35 and a rear panel section 36, connected to each other along one side margin by a line of stitches 37 and along the other side margin by a line of stitches 33.

The rear panel section 36, at the top thereof, is connected to the upper margins of the rear panel sections 20 and 21 with its upper edge interposed between the elastic webbing 25 and these upper margins so as to be simultaneously gathered with the gathering of the upper margins of the rear panel sections 20 and 21.

The front panel section 35, at the top thereof, is connected to the upper margins of the front panel sections 13 and 14 with its upper margin joined interiorly at the junction of the waist band portion 16 and the front panel sections 13 and 14 and held by the same line of stitches 17.

The lower front central margin 40 of the front panel section 35 is preferably less in width than the combined width of the marginal portions which make up the tab 29 The lower rear central margin 42 of the rear panel section 36 is preferably less in width than the combined width of the marginal portions which make up the tab 32 (see Figs. 3 and 4), is joined thereto along a line of stitches43 and extends thereover and then therebelow and between the tape 33 and the remainder of the tab 32 where it is secured by a line of stitches 44.

The lower margins of the sections 35 and 36, between the ends of the tabs 29 and 32 preferably have elastic cords 45 therealong and gathered or contracted so as to (see Fig. 3) and is joined thereto along a line of stitchesi 3 provide for an initial contraction of the lower margins of the sections 35 and 36 with expansion or elongation, as required, to accommodate the leg of the child. In use, and with the crotch either open or closed, the garment can be positioned'on the child with the waist band portion 16 at the proper location. The crotch, if unfastened, can be closed by securing the fastening elements-31 and 34 together. Y
