11 Claims. (Cl. 229-43) The: present invention relates tocartons having a constricted portion or neck and which maybe utilized for packaging bottles or the like. IMore'particu'larly the invention relates to such cartons which have a separate top adapted to be retained in place by the construction of the constricted portionof the carton.

Referring now to Fig. 1 a carton is shown having a cartonbodyll and a carton cover 12. The carton body 1"1-may be provided with a bottom '13 of :any desired construction. The carton may be formed of papencardboard, :.plastic or other suitable material.

Extending from the .top ofthe carton body 11 are four tabs 14. The tabs .14 aTe'ShOWnitO :beof :an ornamental crown-like shape "but it :will :bennderstood .zthat other :ornamental zshapes may :be utilized for the .tabs 14;or.-the tabs 14 .may be constructed ofwplainrectangular or trapezoidal shape, or in some cases, .the tabs :mayijbe omitted altogether.

Near the top of each side .of thenartonbody: there are oblique fold lines 15. The fold lines ;15 facilitate the inward folding of the top portions of-the .edges ofcarton ibody 11 to form inwardly extending tabs .22 as indicated .in Fig. '2, for example.

To further facilitate :the inward folding of ctzhe .top edges of the carton I slots :16 may be provided in 'Lthe vertical edges of ,the ;.car,ton. The desirability of the 2,837,264 Patented June 3, 1958 slots 16 will be determined to some-extent by .the weight of the stock utilized to form the carton and in some cases the slots 16 may be dispensed with. The slots 16 could of course be replaced .by intermittent perforations. The fold lines 16 may likewise be formed in any desired. manner such as by creasing, perforating, or in any other manner marking or weakening the carton structure. .Fold line 17 may alsobe provided at the .base of the tabs 14 if desired.

The cover 12 (for the carton may consist of a square top '18 having flaps '19 extending from each side thereof. The flaps 19 are provided with end portions 21. having diverging edges. The, flaps 19 shown have an outline generally in the shape of an'hourglass and are formed by cutting triangular notches outo'f each side .ofthe flap 19. It should be understood that the .flaps 19 are not limited to this particularshape althoughit .is preferred that the end .section 21 .of the .flaps '19:have diverging edges for reasons which willbeexplained below.

.In Fig. .2,.the cover 12 is.shown in place .in the carton b0dy 11. It will be .understoodthat the cover will .normally be .put in place after the contents have been placed in the carton. The upper portion .22 of the edges of thecarton body .11 willnormally be pressed inward after the cover 12 has .been inserted in the-carton body '11. From Fig. .2 it will .be noted that the bottomportion-Zl ofthe flap 19.is -.shapedto fit between the. inwardly {6X- tending tabs'22, and due toits divergent shape the end section 21 of the flap '19; prevents. removal of :the cover 12 once the inwardly extending flaps22 have been pressed into place.

Normally a tie :23 will :be placed around the top :of the .carton bodyll as shown in Fig.4. -Tieingofthe tie 23 compresses the sides of the carton body .11 and-:of the cover 12 to form a carton having a constricted section or neck at the top portion thereof. The carton shown is particularly adapted for the packaging ofbottles or the like and in Fig. 4 it will be seen that :a :bottle such as 25 is rigidly secured within the carton due to the inward extension of the flaps 22.

,By comparing ,Fig. 4 to Fig. -3 showing the carton before the tie is placedthereon, it will :benoted that the compression of the sidescauses thetop ofthe1carton to be lowered by an amount indicatedat 24 in Fig. 4. This lowering of the carton :top also causes the contents to be more snugly secured 'withinwthe carton and hence less likely to be :damaged.

It may be noted from Fig. 4 that a two piece carton is provided which may be secured by a tie such as 23 in such a fashion that the top of the carton cannot be opened without damaging the carton itself or releasing the tie 23. The carton is therefore tamper-proofto the extent that :any tampering with the contents of the carton will be evidenced by'damage to the tie 23 or to the carton itself.

It should likewise be noted that a carton according 'the use of an ornamental tie such as a ribbon, bowxor the like in .the place or in addition to tie 23. The tie 23 of course need not be hand-tied on the carton but may be glued, pressed or snapped on the carton by hand or by machine if desired.- A ribbon, a cord or elastic band may be used for the tie 23 and thus the term tie is to be construed to include any suitable means for securing the top of the carton body 11.

The particular carton shown by way of illustration is adapted especially for use in packaging bottles and thus the constricted section is placed at the top of the carton. It should be appreciated, however, that a carton having a constricted section in the .centralportion could also 'be E constructed in accordance with the present invention or that if desired the body 11 with its inwardly forming tabs 22 could be shortened to foi'rn the top of a carton while the tabs 19 could be placed at the top of an elongated carton body thereby reversing the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 through 4.

Obviously the invention is not limited to square or foursided cartons, but may be adapted to cartons with three, five or other numbers of sides as well.

It will be appreciated that many other modifications may be made within the scope of the invention. The scope of the invention is therefore not to be construed to be limited to the particular embodiment shown byway of illustration, but is to be limited solely by the appended claims.

What is claimed is. g

1. A two piece carton adapted to be formed into a packagehaving a constricted section comprising a first piece having at least 3 sides-and a bottom, each said side having two oblique fold lines, each said fold line running from a point on the top of'said side to, a point on a respective edge of said side, said fold lines serving to facilitate inward folding of the portions of said first piece delineated by said fold lines, and a second piece comprising a multisided fiat section and flaps extending from the sides of said section, said flaps having divergent edges near the end thereof, said second piece being adapted to be placed with said flapsextending into said first piece and retainedtherein when fthe portions of said first piece delineated by said fold lines are folded inward.

A carton adapted to be formed into a package having a constricted section comprising a carton body having at least three sides and a bottom, each said side having two oblique fold lines, each said fold line running from a point on the top of said side to a point on a respective edge of said side, saidfold lines serving to facilitate in-,

ward folding of the portions of said carton body delineated by said fold lines, and a carton cover comprising a multi-sided top and flaps extending from the sides of said top, said flaps having divergent edges near the end thereof, whereby the carton cover may be placed with said flaps extending into said carton body and will be retained therein when the top corners of said carton body are folded inward.

A carton adapted to-be formed into a package having a constricted section comprising a carton body having four sides and'a bottom, each said side having two oblique fold lines, each said fold line running from a point on the top of said side to a point on a respective edge of said carton body formed by .the junction of two of said sides, said fold lines serving to facilitate inward folding of the portions of said carton body delineated by said fold lines, and a carton cover comprising a four sided top and a flap extendingfrom each side of said top, each said fiap having divergent edges near the end thereof, whereby the carton cover may be placed with said flaps extending into said carton body and will be retained therein when the top corners of said carton body are folded inward.

A carton adapted to be formed into a package having a constricted section comprising a carton body having four sides and a bottom, each said side having two oblique fold lines, each said fold line running from a point on the top of said side to a point on a respective edge of said carton body formed by the junction of two of said sides, each of the, corners of saidcarton body having a slot therein near the top edge. thereof to facilitate inward folding of the portions of said carton body delineated by said fold lines, and a carton cover comprising a four sided top and a flap extending from each side of said top, each said flap having divergent edges near the end thereof, whereby the carton cover may be placed with said flaps extending into said carton body and will be retained therein when the top corners of said carton body are folded inward.

A carton adapted to be formed into a package having a constricted section comprising a carton body having four sides and a bottom, each said side having two oblique fold lines, each said fold line running from a point on the top of said side to a point on a respective edge of said carton body formed by the junction of two of said sides, each of the corners of said carton body having a slot therein near the top edge thereof to facilitate inward folding of the portions of said carton body delineated by said fold lines, said carton body further having a tab extending from the top of each side of said body, and a carton cover comprising a four sided top and a fiap extending from each side of said top, each said flap having divergent edges near the end thereof, whereby the carton cover may be placed with said flaps extending into said carton body and will be retained therein when the top of the corners of said carton body are folded inward.

A carton forming a package having a constricted section comprising a carton body having at least three sides and a bottom, the top portion of each cornenof said carton-body being folded inward, a carton-coveron the top of said carton body, said cover comprising a multi-sided top and a flap extending downwardly from each side of said top into said carton body, each .said

flap having an end withdiverging edges which engage the inwardly folded portions of said carton. .body to retain said cover on said carton body.

A carton forming a package having a constricted" section comprising a carton body having at least three sides and a bottom, the top portion of each corner ofsaid carton body being folded inward, a carton cover on thetop of said carton body, said cover comprising a multisided top and a flap extending downwardly from each side of said top into said carton body, each said flap having an end with diverging edges which engage the inwardly folded portions of said carton body to retain said cover on said carton body, and a tie placed around the top portion of said carton body to compress the sides of said body near the top of said carton.

8. A carton forming a package having a constricted section comprising a carton body having at least three sides and a bottom, each said side having two oblique fold lines, each said fold line running from a point on the top of said side to a point on a respective edge of said carton body formed by the junction of two of said sides, the top portion of each corner of said carton body being folded inward, a carton cover on the top of said carton body, said cover comprising a multi-sided top and a flap extending downwardly from each side of said top into said carton body, each said fiap having an end with diverging edges which engage the inwardly folded portions of said carton body to retain said cover on said carton body.

A carton forming a package having a constricted section comprising a carton body having four sides and a bottom, each said side having two oblique fold lines, each said fold line running from a point on the top of said side to a point on a respective edge of said carton body formed by the junction of two of said sides, the top portion of each corner: of said carton body being folded inward, a carton cover on the top of said carton body, said cover comprising a four sidedtop and a flap extending downwardly from each side of said topinto said carton body, each said flap having an end with diverging edges which engages inwardly folded portions of said carton body to retain said cover on said carton body, and a tie placed around the top portion of said carton body to compress the sides of said body and the flaps of said top near the top of said carton. A carton forming a package having a constricted section comprising a carton body having four sides and a bottom, each said side having two oblique fold lines, each said fold line running from a point on the top of said side to a point on a respective edge of said carton body formed by the junction of two of said sides, the top portion of each corner of said carton body-being folded inward, said carton body further having a tab extending from the top of each side of said body, a carton cover on the top of said carton body, said cover comprising a four-sided top and a flap extending downwardly from each side of said top into said carton body, each said flap having an end with diverging edges which engages the inwardly folded portions of said carton body to retain said cover on said carton body, and a tie placed around the top portion of said carton body to compress the sides of said body near the top of said carton.

11. A carton forming a package having a constricted section comprising a carton body having four sides and a bottom, each said side having two oblique fold lines, each said fold line running from a point on the top of said side to a point on a respective edge of said carton body formed by the junction of two of said sides, each of the corners of said carton body having a slot therein near the top thereof, the top portion of each said corner being folded inward, said carton body further having a tab extending from the top of each side of said body, a carton cover on the top of said carton body, said cover comprising a four sided top and a flap extending downwardly from each side of said top into said carton body, said flaps having ends with diverging edges which engage the inwardly folded portions of said carton body to retain said cover on said carton body, and a tie placed around the top portion of said carton body to compress the sides of said body near the top of said carton.
