9 Claims.
This invention relates to cartons for receiving pieces of hollow ware such as a bowl of glass or other hollow article of a frangible material.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved carton whereby it can be manufactured at small cost and yet provide ample protection against injury or destruction of ware in handling or in transportation.
Another object of the invention is an improved construction of carton whereby packing material such for example as excelsior or sawdust is rendered unnecessary. Other objects will appear from the disclosure herein.
The invention is embodied in the construction 25 herein shown and described, the feature of novelty being pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating an example according to the invention- Figure 1 is a plan view of the prepared blank .7 with which'the carton is formed.
' Fig. 2 is a plan view illustrating a portion of the interior of the carton containing a bowl.
Fig. 3 is a side view with parts opened i1lustrating the manner in which the bowl engaging 5 tongues are applied.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view, on a smaller scale illustrating how the carton is sealed after the outer covering panels are closed.
Referring first to Fig. l the blank is formed 30 preferably from a strip of double faced corrugated paper board or any other suitable material such as required or permitted by the postal authorities or transporting companies, the said strip being of rectangular oblong form and die out to form the members substantially as shown. The full lines within the boundaries of the blank of the view said Fig. 1 illustrates die out lines and the broken lines indicate scoring or bending lines. Where the paper is thick these latter lines 40 should be depressed. I
The bending or hinging lines referred to define twelve panels of nearly equal form and dimensions there being three in each of the vertical or transverse rows, the plain rows alternating hinging lines preparatory to cause their engagement with the ware.
The panels 9, l0, II and I2 are destined to form the vertical walls of the carton, and when, in the process of forming the carton, the blank is 5 bent or closed on the transverse lines aa, b-b and c-c until the outer extremities of the panels 9 and I2 meet the said panels 9 to I2 inclusive constitute such vertical walls of the carton and are held in said position by an adhesive strip I3 10 of paper or cloth applied to the meeting margins only of the panels as indicated in Fig. 4.
When in the form brought by the operation described in the next preceding paragraphs the panels 6 and 8 with their tongues 5 and 8 are 1 suitably projected on their hinging lines and the said panels 6 and 8 are elevated to horizontal position as shown in Fig. 3 their said tongues 6* and 8 engage the exterior wall of the bowl near its bottom. After this the panels 5 and I with their tongues 5 and l are projected inward on their bending lines and the panels 5 and 1 turned downward on their hinging lines to cause said tongues to engage the interior wall of the bowl near its top.
When the panels 5 and 1 are closed the notches 5 and l in the free edges thereof coincide and form a convenient hole for the insertion of a finger of the hand to lift either of said panels.
The panels H and [8 when bent upward to horizontal position on their hinging lines form the two halves of the closing bottom of the carton; and likewise when the panels l5 and 16 are bent downward to horizontal position on their hinging lines these form the two halves of the top closure of the carton. The meeting lines of the said closed panels [1 and I8 and I5 and I6 respectively lie parallel to each other in the same vvertical plane so that upon the application of one or more strips IQ of adhesive paper to the meeting margins as indicated in Fig. 4 serve to seal and hold said closing panels together and in place to form the carton, ready for delivery.
It'will be noted that the panels I!) and 12 between the panels containing the ware engaging 5 tongues are shown as being a little narrower than the longitudinally contiguous panels 9 and I I, and that this difference promotes parallelism of the closing panels [5 and l! and I6 and I8, with the tongue panels when the said closing panels are 5 turned to lie over the tongued panels.
Because the tongued panels 5 and 6 and 1 and 8 when turned to position to engage their tongues with the ware, fit rather closely between the side walls, 9 and II, said panels serve to brace all the side walls against collapse after the members are secured together as in Fig. 4.
From the construction shown and described, it will be observed that the ware contained by the carton is held by the panels and tongues thereof from movement in any direction in relation to the carton; and because, as shown, the ware is held spaced from the main or lateral walls of the carton especially by the tongues engaging the ware externally (see Fig. 3) there is little or no danger of breakage in the ordinary handling and transportation of the package.
The material, form, size and number of the parts can be varied without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
l. A carton for containing a piece of hollow ware formed of a blank including a row of panels bent on bending lines to form the sides of the carton, panels bendably connected with opposed edges of alternate panels in the said row of wall forming panels, said last named panels contain ing tongues bendable therefrom to engage the interior and exterior sides of the wall of the ware between its top and bottom.
2. A carton for containing a piece of hollow ware formed of a blank including a row of pane-ls bent on bending lines to form the sides of the carton, panels bendably connected with opposed edges of alternate panels in the said row of wall forming panels, said last named panels containing tongues bendable therefrom to engage the interior and exterior sides of the wall of the ware between its top and bottom, said tongues in the upper panel of the carton being spaced from each other differently from the spacing of those in the lower panel.
3. A carton for containing a piece of hollow ware formed of a blank including a row of panels bent on bending lines to form the sides of the carton, panels bendably connected with opposed edges of alternate panels in the said row of wall forming panels, said last named panels containing tongues bendable therefrom to engage the i11- terior and exterior sides of the wall of the ware between its top and bottom and panels bendably connected with other alternate panels in said sides forming row constituting covers for said tongued panels.
