3 Claims.
The object of the present invention is to provide an inexpensive sturdy bottle carton by means of which a plurality, for example, six, liquid-containing bottles may be packaged and carried by means of a handle device adapted as a latching element for the folded carton panels, and this being accomplished by die-cutting a-sheet of cardboard without any waste of importance.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic plan view showing three of the cartons placed together to denote the relative position of the cartons in packing them for shipment of bottles in bulk.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention, showing the position of the 20 carton elements as the bottles are inserted therein Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view, showing the upper portion of an embodiment of the invention, witha modified form of latch or locking element.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that the device enables the packing of a plurality of bottles in superposed horizontal rows as indicated in Figure 1. The necks oi the bottles may extend outwardly through openings in an end panel of the structure and the folded panels enclose the bottles and provide an overlying handle for conveniently carrying the package. 1
The blank shown in Figure 3 comprises a base panel I having at each end a lip lac provided with a fold line at kw. At one side of panel I is a multi-panel section scored along the lines a and b to form a central substantially triangular panel 2 at the sides of which are the wings 3 and 33:.
Each wing is formed with a hand hole at t. At the'side of base panel l opposite panel 2 is a multi-panel structure scored on the lines a to define a central substantially triangular panel 5 at the sides of which are the wings t, tr. Wing t is formed with a hand hole at l and wing Ex is cut in U-shaped formation to provide a handle latch foldable on the scored line b as later to be described.
In using the device, the lips extending from the sides of panel I may be folded upwardly, and then somewhat inwardly along the lines lzczc and thereupon panel 2 may be folded upwardly on the scored line 0. The wings may then be bent inwardly a slight distance so that the partially folded structure will lie in the position of Figure 55 4. Thereupon, three bottles may be moved forwardly upon panel I so that the necks thereof will project through the lowermost row of neckreceiving apertures, which apertures are indicated at 9. The first row of bottles will afiord support for the succeeding two bottles to form a 5 second row, and the final bottle of the half-dozen when placed over between the two underlying bottles.- The necks of the bottles will then be projected as. in the manner shown in Figure 1. When theibottles are thus stacked the substantially triangular panel 5 is folded upward along the line d and the wings are inwardly bent so that all of the handle holes 4 are brought into I mutual contact. At this point, the handle latch Ill carried by wing 6.1, which wing lies over wing 15 3:2, as shown in Figure 1, will be pressed through the hand holes andswung upwardly into latching position. Due to the fact that the handle latch III has its major length at its central longitudinal line, it will be securely held in position when it is pressed through the hand hole of the panel wing 5. In addition to this locking characteristic, the handle latch serves as a covering face for the hand hole cut into each of the lips h and enables carrying the package without 25 the latter cutting into the fingers. The handle elements above the hand holes are indicated at h.
A modification of the handle lip is shown in Figure 5 at like, it being wedge-shape in formation and secured to the abutting handle lips by a staple II.
The bottles are indicated by the numeral 52 and their caps at 523:. The bottle-containing packages when shipped in bulk may be alternately reversed as shown in Figure 2 and the capped bottles of a lower layer of cartons will give adequate support for an overlaying layer of filled cartons as will be readily understood. In abutting the cartons the handle lips may be folded upon one face of the carton, as shown in Figure 2, in 4 each case.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
I 1. A carrying carton for bottles comprising a k sheet of cardboard or the like formed w th a cenmany disposed base panel and each side thereof formed with a multi-panel structure scored to define a central substantially triangular panel and a panel wing extending from each side there- 59 of, each panel wing being formed with an outing adapted to enter the hand hole cuts of the 55 remaining three wings and to serve as a latching lip to hold the carton in closed position, one of the triangular panels being formed with rows of apertures to receive the necks of bottles contained within the carton.
2. A carrying carton for bottles comprising a sheet of cardboard or the like, formed with a centrally disposed base panel having laterally projected lips, and at each side of the base panel formed with a multi-panel structure scored to define a central substantially triangular panel and a panel wing extending from each side thereof, one of the triangular panels being formed with rows of apertures to receive the necks of bottles contained within the carton, the lips being adapted for movement within the wings of the triangular panels, thereby closing the carton 3. A carrying carton for bottles constructed in accordance with claim 2,12: which the plurality of wings which extend from the sides or the central substantially triangular panels are formed with outwardly projecting handle members adapted to contact and to be mutually held together for maintaining the carton in closed position.
