GOMBINED CLAMP HANDLE AND WRETCH FOR HOSE. I No. 288,714. Patented Aug. 21, 1883.
TENS. Phalo-ljllsogmphun Washmgmm I) I.
' coupling as a wrench.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAFAYETTE KINZEL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
COMBINED CLAMP -HANDLE AND WRENCH FOR HOSE.
SPEGIFIC ATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,714, dated August 21, 1883 Application filed June 18,1883. (No model.)
tions of fire-hose, and whichwill also serve as a wrench to uncouple two or more sections of hose. It is dimcult to handle hose used with fire-engines when the same are under pressure of the pumping agency, and to carry the same up and down ladders and move them from place to place to accommodate the fire men.
My device is adapted to be used with one hand. My device grasps the hose readily andholds it, so that it will not slip upon thehose, allowing the use of it in going up anddown ladders and other places where it is difficult to employ both hands. My invention accomplishes this object more perfectly than devices hitherto employed. At the same time it is adapted to be used as. a wrench for uncoupling the joints without any change of the parts,
so that the clamp and wrench or spanner are one and the same device, and adapted at all tinies to either use, as occasion may require. At the same time its construction is such that the operator, when using it as a clamp, can handle the hose with convenience.
Figure 1 represents my improvement shown in relation to a section of hose and opened to span the same. Fig. 2 shows my improvement clamped round a section of hose. Fig. 3 is an elevation of my device secured to the Fig. 4 is asection on line a: m, Fig. 3.
A represents a section of ordinary hose.
B represents a hosecoupling.
G 0 represent studs or spurs cast on and with coupling B in the ordinary manner, to
,enable the wrench to be employed for turning the coupling.
D E represent circular jaws or tongs of a size and curvature to clasp or encircle the hose.
- E G represent shanks of the tongs, the limbs of which are united together by a rivet, a. V A b 0 represent links welded in the eye of shanks F G.
H indicates a handle, composed of a bar havingeyes at its ends for receiving the links I b 0, whereby the handle is connected with the I when the'device is used as awrench to uncouple sections of hose. lvhen'used as a clamp, the operator grasps the handle H and lifts or pulls upwardly, canting the jaws D E over and causing the front and rear edges of the jaws tov compress the hose slightly and prevent the slipping of the tool upon the hose, and gives the operator great leverage of-power to exert hisstrength upon the flexible handle H, enabling him to much more easily and conveniently move the hose. tain a new hold he simply slackens his hold, releases the jaws slightly, slips the tool back, and pulls on the handle H, as before described, all of which can be readily performed with one 'hand alone.
5 By reversely curving the shanks F G a short compact tool is provided, which can be readily In letting go to ob= carried in the pocket,'the links I) c permitting the handle to be folded down for portability. ,lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hose clamp and wrench composed of the circular jaws D and E, pivoted together,
and each having a perforation, d, and a shank provided with a link, and a handle having eyes at its ends, connected with the links, substantially as described.
2. The hose-clamp consisting, essentially,'of the circular jaws D E, pivoted together by rivet a, andhaving the reversely-curved shanks F G, connected by the handleH, hingedthereto, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto. set my hand. V
LAFAYETTE KINZEL.
