Description

May 20, 1958 T. w. STUA RD 2,835,422 HANGER ACCESSORY Filed March 30, 1955 INVENTOR. TRUMAN W. STUARD ATTORNEY 2 ,835,422 HANGER ACCESSORY Truman W. Stuard,La Jolla, Calif. Application March 39,1955, Serial No. 497,914
' Claims. 01. 223 92 This invention relates to hangers and particularly to a dress hanger accessory readilyattachable to a dresshanger to be employed for hanging dresses or other light garments.
Many dress hangers today are made of a plastic material. When a dress is hung on such a hanger, the dress easily slides to one side or the other and thus hangs unevenly. Not only does this greatly increase the likelihood of permanent distortion of the dress when hung for a long period of time in this uneven position, but further when the hanger is used to display dresses, in a shop, the undesired sagging'or distortions materially detractfrom the desired display effect.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a hanger accessory which can be easily attached to and replaced on a conventional dress hanger and which prevents undesired slippage of a dress hung thereon.
It is another object of this invention to provide a hanger accessory comprising a strip of elastic material having at least one surface which is resistant to the sliding of cloth, a hole at each end of said strip, the
- United States Patent 0 2,835,422 Patented May sory 4 is preferablyv constructed of white rubber or of any other suitable flexible or elastic materiall Referring now to Figs. 2 and 4 detailed views of the hanger accessory contemplated by' this invention are shown. Accessory strip 4 is constructed of a strip of white rubber having a comparatively thick reinforcing edge 11 extending around its entire edge. The lateral width of strip 4 between reinforcing edges 11 made slightly greater than the thickness'of the edge of the hanger. At one end of strip 4, just inboard of reinforcing edge 11, hole 5 is provided for insertion over prong 6 of hanger slot 2 in Fig. 2. Extending laterally across strip 4 in the vicinity of hole 5 are a plurality of raised ridges 10. At the otherend of strip 4,'one or more holes 7 or 8 are provided inboard of reinforcing edge 11, for insertion over prong'9 of hanger slot 3. The distance between hole 5 and hole 7 or 8 is less than the edge length of hanger 1 betweenslots 2 and 3. The edge length of hanger 1 between slots 2 and'3 is the length along the outer rim of the hanger from the base of prong 6 to the base of prong 9. Thus, when strip 4 is attached to hanger 1 by insertion over prongs 6 and 9, strip 4 is continuously maintained under tension to thereby prevent any slippage of the strip off the edge of the hanger. Further, since reinforcing edge ll'is placed under tension and is materially stronger than the center of strip 4, edge 11 is placed on each side of the edge of hanger 1 and thereby provides a tensile force acting toward the face of the hanger and preventing strip 4 from shifting oil the edge of the hanger.
Hanger accessories 4 are attached to hangerl as shown in Fig. 2. Reinforcing edge 11 around hole 5 of accessory strip '4 is placed in slot 2 over prong 6. The strip length of said strip between said holes being less than the edge lengthbetween two slots on said hanger, and a reinforced elastic edging extending along the entire edge of said strip.
i It is a further object of this invention to provide a hangeraccessory which supplies means for preventing slippage of a dress or other garment hung thereon.
It is another object of this invention to provide in combination with a dress hanger having a pair of slots spaced a predetermined distance apart along the edge at each end of said hanger, a hanger accessory comprising a strip of elastic material having two holes spaced less than said predetermined distance apart.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a typical dress hanger to which two of the hanger accessories contemplated by this invention have been attached.
Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the hanger of Fig. 1 showing the method of attachment of the hanger accessory contemplated by this invention.
Fig. 3 is a sectioned view of the hanger accessory contemplated by this invention taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the hanger accessory contemplated by this invention before it has been placed on the hanger.
Referring now to Fig. 1, dress hanger 1 has hanger accessories 4 attached to a pair of slots at each end thereof. Hanger 1 is constructed with a pair of slots and prongs at each end as is more clearly shown in Fig. 2. These slots are spaced a predetermined distance apart measured along the edge of hanger 1. Hanger 1 is preferably constructed of a plastic material having a metallic hook by means well-known to those skilled in the art and need not be further described here.
Hanger accesis then placed along the outer edge of hanger 1 making certain that reinforcing edges 11 are placed on opposite sides of the hanger lip or edge. (See Fig. 3.) Placing edge of hanger l, the reinforced edge 11 around hole 7 or hole 8 is next inserted in slot 3 over prong 9. It is t o be noted that the longitudinal tensions in strip 4 are predominantly in reinforced edges 11. Thus, as noted above, in addition to the natural tendency of the stretched center portion of strip 4 to act to maintain hanger accessory 4 in place, there is a strong tensile force exerted on each side of the lip of hanger 1 by. reinforced edges ll which make it very difiicult to accidentally slip the accessory off the hanger.
As noted above one of these accessory strips 4 is attached to each end of hanger 1. When the garment is then placed on the hanger, ridges 10 form a friction surface which prevents any slippage of the garment from its original position. Since ridges 10 are constructed of rubber and are made smooth, they do not in any way injure the garment even though the latter may be of the finest texture.
When a dress hanger is equipped with the above described accessories, there is comparatively little tendency.
for the garment to slip to one side or the other. It is to be noted that this accessory is readily attachable to presently available dress hangers and that it will maintain its position on the hanger without the necessity of providing a glue or other fasteningmeans to permanently attach the ridged material to the hanger. The accessories can be readily removed or replaced when soiled or otherwise damaged.
Although the invention has been described and illustrated in detail, it is to be clearly understood that the same is by way of illustration and example only and is not to be taken by way of limitation, the spirit and scope of this invention being limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination, a garment hanger havinga pair of slots forming hooks at each end in the edge thereof, one of each pair of said slots being a predetermined distance along the upper edge of said hanger from the end thereof, the other of each pair of said slots being a predetermined distance along the edge of said hanger from said first-named slot, and a strip of elastic material having at least one friction surface adapted to be stretched between the slots of each pair of said slots, said strip having holes at each end receiving said books, the unstretched distance between said holes being substantially less than the distance between the slots of each pair of said slots on saidhanger.
2. In combination, a garment hanger having a pair of slots forming hooks spaced a predetermined distance apart in the edge of said hanger at the ends thereof, at least one of each pair of said slots being on the upper surface of said hanger, said edge of said hanger being a predetermined thickness, and a strip of elastic material having at least one friction surface and having a reinforcing edging of comparatively thick elastic material, the width of said strip between said edging being greater than the thickness of said edge of said hanger, said strip further having holes receiving said hooks of said hanger, said holes being inboard of said reinforcing edging at each end of said strip, the unstretched distance between said holes being lessthan said predetermined distance between the slots of each pair of said slots on said hanger, one of said strips being attached to said garment hanger at each end thereof by insertion of the reinforced edging around said holes into each pair of slots whereby said reinforcing edging on said strip provides a tensile force maintaining said strip on the edge of said hanger.
