CURVED WALLET Filed June 8, 1956 United States Patent CURVED WALLET Elmer D. Silha, Chicago, Ill. Application June 8, 1956, Serial No. 590,213
2 Claims. (Cl. 150-38) My invention relates to a wallet which is curved to fit the hip of a user.
It is among the objects of my invention to provide such a curved wallet which is particularly adapted to be worn on the hip of a user, and which will defy disfiguretion and retain its original neat appearance. My wallet will have longer life and be more comfortable in the back or hip pocket of the user.
My wallet, when folded in normal position for use, fits the curve of the hip of the user. It does not bulge like a flat wallet to attract attention with its awkward bulk. Being curved, my wallet remains neat in appearance. It is not conspicuous and does not attract unfavorable attention. It is never twisted out of shape. In addition it is more comfortable for the wearer to use.
My invention also comprises such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear, and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of my invention, yet it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is an inside face view of my curved wallet; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of my curved wallet in open position and Fig. 3 in closed position; Fig. 4 is a front elevational view in folded position; Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view of line 5-5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is an elevational view partly broken away to show the metal ribs; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of my metal ribs.
The embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a wallet 10 having an outside front cover 11 and an inside cover 12 attached together at their marginal edges on the top 13, bottom 14 and spaced sides 15 and 16 by suitable means such as threads, when the covers are leather or the like, or crimping when the covers are plastic. A flap 17 is suitably attached to the inside cover at its sides 18 and 19 to sides 15 and 16 of the inside cover and at its bottom 20 to the bottom 14 of the inside cover 12. The flap 17 has an open top 21 to permit the reception and withdrawal of bills, when the wallet is in open position. In closed position the wallet is folded inwardly at its middle 22.
A pair of spaced curved metal ribs 23 and 24 are positioned between the outside and inside covers 11 and 12 and extend from the side 15 to a point short of the middle 22. Another pair of spaced ribs 25 and 26 are positioned between the outside and inside covers 11 and 2,835,300 Patented May 20, 1958 12 and extend from the side 16 to a point short of the middle 22. Rib 23 is spaced from rib 24 by stitching or crimping 28. The ribs do not occupy all of the space between the covers either lengthwise or sidewise.
As the wallet appears in open position, ribs 23 and 24 are curved upwardly and are convex and ribs 25 and 26 are curved downwardly and are concave. When the wallet is folded on middle 22, the curves of the ribs are such that they nest and the wallet is in closed position for insertion into the hip pocket of theuser, so that the concave surface of the wallet engages and fits against the convex curve of the user.
Said ribs are of stilf metal such :as steel, and are resistant to ordinary pressure in use and will remain in their original curved position.
The ribs have a plurality of spaced holes 29 in them to lighten them. The ribs are spaced with space between them as heretofore stated :and also on the sides and ends of them, to provide sufiicient curving without added weight or unnecessary stiffness to the wallet.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A curved wallet comprising an outer cover, an inner cover attached at its top, bottom and spaced sides to like portions of said outer cover, a flap attached to the spaced sides and bottom of said inner cover and having an open top for the reception and withdrawal of bills, said wallet foldable inwardly upon itself at its middle for closed position, a pair of spaced convex metal members positioned within said covers and extending from one end to a point short of the middle and another pair of spaced concave metal members positioned within said covers and extending from the other end to a point short of the middle, said convex and said concave metal members adapted to nest upon the wallet being folded inwardly upon itself at its middle into closed position, so that when the closed wallet is positioned in the hip pocket of the user, its concave surface engages with and fits the convex curve of the hip of the user.
2. A curved wallet comprising an outer cover and an inner cover attached at their marginal edges, and a flap attached at its sides and bottom to said inner cover and having :an open top forming an elongated bill retaining pocket portion, said wallet foldable inwardly upon itself at its middle for closed position, a stiff concave member positioned within said covers and extending from one end to a point short of the middle, a stilf convex member positioned within said covers and extending from the opposite end to a point short of the middle, said concave and said convex members adapted to nest upon the wallet being folded inwardly upon itself at its middle to closed position, so that when said closed wallet is positioned in the hip pocket of the user, its concave surface engages with and fits the convex curve of the hip of the user.
