OVERCOLLAR FOR OVERCOAT Filed March 9, 1956 V I INVENTOR. Harm cm L,Zzmm ermmz BY M W/WW r ATTORNEK9 United States PatentQ This invention: relatesv to detachable vovercollars for overcoats, ,topcoats and: similar, articles of apparel...
An object of the invention is to provide a. novel; and
improved, detachable overcollar adapted to be removably secured tothe inside neck portion. of an overcoat or the like so. as ,to-overlie the regular collar of said coat, said detachable collar being convertible into a hat or. hood, in conjunction with the regular coat collar, by detaching'it from the said neck portion and fastening it to the free edge of the regular coat collar.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved overcollar in accordance with the above, which does not require any alteration of the regular coat or collar thereof, except the incorporation of cooperable fastening elements by which the overcollar may be secured in its different operative positions.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved detachable overcollar as above characterized, which is extremely simple in its construction and economical to fabricate.
A feature of the invention resides in the provision of an improved overcollar of the above type, which may be easily and quickly adapted or converted to its uses as either an auxiliary collar or a hat or hood. 7
Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of an improved overcollar in accordance with the foregoing, which may be faced with fur or other collarfacing material, thereby to provide a fur or other distinctive collar on an overcoat which otherwise is provided only with the usual or ordinary collar.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the drawings accompanying this specification, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever possible in the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a top view of the improved collar of the present invention, shown in flat position with the several pieces or components thereof superposed one on the Other.
Fig. 2 is a view like Fig. 1 but of the reverse or underside of the overcollar.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the overcollar used as a. hat.
Fig. 4 is a front view of the overcollar, shown attached to an overcoat and folded or rolled over the regular coat collar thereof.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the overcollar attached to the free edge of the regular coat collar and extended or unfolded so as to constitute a hood, for covering the head of the wearer.
and 11 are arranged in superposed relationship as shown, and are secured together along one set of corresponding convex edges 12 in any suitable manner, as for example by stitches or other fastening means.
Patented May 20, 1958 ice As. clearly sceninFig. 2, the. under piece 11 isv smaller than the,top-..-or outer piece 10, and has end edges 13 and 14. which fall. short .ofv the end edges 15 and 16 of the larger piece.
For the purpose of securing the overcollar in various positions on an-overcoat, the larger or top piece 10 is provided with releasable fastening-means, which may be advantageously inthe form of button holes 17 (shown herein as three in number).
Referring.;to-Fig. 4, there is illustrated an overcoat 18 having buttons 19 secured inside theneck portion of the usual collar, 'saidbuttons. beingso disposed that they may be passed through thebutton-holcs 17 to secure the overcollar to theinside of the neck portion of the coat. When so secured, the overcollar may be folded or rolled downward so thatthe, piece 10 is exposed, as shown in Fig; 4,; thereby giving-the appearance of an ordinary collal' of a coat.
Further, in accordancewiththeinvention, the regular coatcollar of the coat 1'8,indicated at 20 in Fig. 5, may be provided on its underside with buttons 21 arranged to be-.-receivedinthe button holes 17 of the piece 10, thereby to enable the latter to be releasably attached to the free edge ofthe collar 20, as shown. With this arrangement, the overcollar may advantageously constitute a hood, for disposition about the head of the wearer of the coat.
Further, in accordance with the invention, the free edge 23 of the piece 11 is provided with cooperable fastener means, as for example mating zipper elements, thereby to enable one-half of said edge to be releasably attached to the other half, thereby to close over the top of the hood as illustrated in Fig. 5.
For the purpose of holding the pieces 10 and 11 in their normal, superposed relationship when the overcollar is worn as a collar, separable fastening means 25, as for example, snap fasteners or the like, may be provided on the pieces 10 .and 11, thereby to secure the free edge portions of the piece 11 to the adjoining surface portions of the piece 10, as shown in Fig, 2.
For the purposes of the invention a fabric facing 26 may be provided on the piece 10 in such a way as to be exposed when the overcollar is constituted as a collar, as seen in Fig. 4.
It will be readily understood that, by the present invention, I have provided a novel and improved detachable overcollar for overcoats, topcoats and the like, which overcollar is extremely simple, economical in construction, and adapted to constitute either an additional collar for the overcoat, or else in conjunction with the regular collar of the overcoat, a hat or hood which may be dis posed about the head of the wearer of the overcoat. The detachable overcollar may be easily and quickly converted from one use to the other, and may be easily arranged by virtue of the snap fasteners, zipper elements, and buttons and button holes.
Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of the claims, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
I-claim:
1. The combination of an overcoat having a permanently attached collar on which there is a free edge pro vided with separable fastening means, and having other separable fastening means inside its neck portion; a detachable overcollar for said overcoat, comprising a pair of segmental-shaped pieces of material disposed in superposed relation; means securing together one pair of corresponding edges of said pieces of material, along a fold line, the opposite edges of said pieces of material being juxtaposed to each other; fastening means carried by one of said pieces of material, adjacent the said opposite edge thereof, for engagement with the said other fastening means in the overcoat neck portion or with the fastening means on the free edge of the collar, to secure said piece either inside of the regularcoollar of the overcoat or else to the said free edge of the'regular collar; .and separable, cooperable fastening means on the said opposite edge of the other piece of material, for detachably securing the two halves of said opposite edge together in coextensive relationship.
2. The invention as defined in claim 1, in which the said one piece is wider than the said other piece and is provided with .a collar facing suitable for being exposed to View when the pieces are superposed and folded in the form of a collar.
3. The invention as defined in claim 2 in which the collar facing comprises fabric.
4. The invention as defined in claim 1, in which the fastener means on the first piece comprises button holes.
5. The invention as defined in claim 1, in which the separable fastener means on the said opposite edge of the second piece comprises zipper elements.
- 6. The invention as defined in claim 1, in which there are separable cooperable fasteners adjacent the said opposite edge of the second piece and the adjoining portions of the first piece, to temporarily hold said pieces in superposed relationship.
7. In combination, an overcoat having a permanent collar on which there is a free edge, said collar being provided with separable fastening means on its underside adjacent the free edge thereof, and having like, separable fastening means on the inside of the neck portion; a detachable overcollar for said overcoat, comprising a pair of segmental-shaped pieces of material disposed in superposed relation; means securing together one pair of corresponding edges of said pieces of material, along a fold line, the opposite edges of said pieces of material being juxtaposed to each other; fastener means carried by one of said pieces of material, adjacent to the said opposite edge thereof, for engagement with the separable fastening means of the overcoat to secure said piece either inside of the regular collar of the overcoat or else to the free edge of said collar, said one piece having at one side and on part only of its surface a collar-type facing providing added thickness to the piece; and separable, cooperable fastening means on the said opposite edge of the other piece of material, for detachably securing the two halves of said opposite opposite edge together in coextensive relationship.
