Description

May 13, 1958 Filed March 28, 1955 IN V EN TOR. Joe 1 06C), Jk.
A7- romvE Y5 wed Se s M r 2,834,333 TURNING DEVICE FOR DIAMOND TOOL Joe Loecy, Jr., Chardon, Ohio Application March 28, 1955, Serial No. 497,227 2 Claims. Cl. 125-39 This invention relates to the art of diamond turners for use in the dressing of grinding wheels and the like.
As is well-known, it was the practice for the operator to intermittently turn the diamond tool in either direction by hand so as to present fresh portions of the diamond surface to theiwork and thus prevent'uneven wear upon the same, the purpose of course being to prolong the life of usefulness of the diamond. Then I developed and have been producing devices with automatically operated means for turning the diamond nib as it is withdrawn from the work in its.back and forth travel; that is, the diamond nib is turned in only one direction so as to always ensure the presentation of a fresh surface portion thereof to the work. But I find that certain conditions and circumstances forbid the use of such automatic devices in some instances and I realize too that his desirable, in the turning of the diamond tool by hand, to provide means for effecting such turning in only one direction so as to prevent the presentation of the same surface portion of the diamond to the work at all times.
Accordingly, the object of my present invention is to devise a diamond turner that may be manipulated by hand and yet may be effective in turning the diamond in only one direction.
A further object is to devise a hand-manipulated.
diamond turner that is of simple construction and hence comparatively inexpensive and that can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable price.
A still further object is to devise a diamond turner of this type that is of a unitary assembly and can be marketed and handled in a convenient manner and can be very readily installed in a machine for use.
Another object consists in the provision of the particular form of structure, as herein disclosed, that makes possible the present improvement as herein noted.
Other objects will appear from the following description and claims when considered together with the accompanying drawing.
Fig. l is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating my present form of device, this view corresponding to line 1--1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a view corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
It is to be understood that the present form of disclosure is merely for the purpose of illustration and that there might be devised various modifications thereof without departing from the spirit of my present invention as herein set forth and claimed.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, the cylindrical housing 1 may be mounted by means of the shank portion 1a upon the machine that is-indicated in only a general way by reference letter M. Within the housing 1 there is rotatably adjustably and coaxially mounted the transfer ring 2 which surrounds the tool holder for rotatable adjustment thereof about the longitudinal axis of the device. This tool holder comprises the holding body part 3 and the nib 4 with the diamond point 5, the nib 4 being held by set screw within the body part 3, The body part 3 has its inner end provided with an 2,834,333 Patented May 13, 19 58 ice ' annular flange portion 3a that is arranged between the base of the housing 1 and the outer annular bearing member 6 which may have its inner portion held by frictional engagement within the housing 1. The spring disk 7 has engagement between the central part of the base of the housing 1 and an annular shoulder provided at the inner end of the tool holder so as to maintain the same in the desired position to which set in the manner to be described below; and I have provided the washer 8 between the outer side of the flange portion 3a of the tool holder and the opposite inner face of the bearing member 6. The bearing member 6 may have a lubricating opening therethrough to the tool holder and this opening has the removable screw-threaded grease-fitting 9. a
Around the outside of the housing 1 the cover ring 10 is mounted for rotatable adjustment thereabout. The outer edges of the cover ring 10 have annular shoulder portions for engagement with the annular corners of the housing 1 and the bearing member 6. The radially extending handle 11 has removable screw-threaded engagement in the enlarged portion of the cover ring 10 and has its inner end formed as a plain projection 12 that extends through the arcuate aperture 13 in the wall of the housing 1 so as to have engagement in the recess 14 in the transfer ring 2. With this arrangement, turning of the handle 11 and the cover ring 19 will cause corresponding turning movement of the transfer ring 2 while the housing 1 remains stationary, such turning movement of the cover ring 10 being permitted back and forth to the extent of the arcuate aperture 13.
Between the annular flange portion 3a of the tool holder and the transfer ring 2 I have provided one-way clutch means so that only the turning of the transfer ring 2 in one direction will effect turning of the holder 3 and its nib 4. This clutch means comprises a plurality of rollers 15, each of which is positioned in a recess 16 in the outer surface of the flange 3a of the tool holder and each of which has a coil spring 17 seated in a recess in the wall of the recess 16, this spring in each instance tending to normally force its roller 15 outwardly towards frictional wedging engagement between the inner surface of the transfer ring 2 and the opposite side of the recess 16. Upon turning of the transfer ring 2 in one direction, counter-clockwise as viewed in Fig. 2 of the present drawing, there will be effected binding or wedging engagement of the rollers 15 between the tool holder and the transfer ring so that the tool holder will be turned then and then only with the transfer ring 2 as a unitand consequently there will be a turning of the diamond. But, upon turning of the transfer ring 2 in the other direction, clockwise as viewed in Fig. 2 hereof, it will slip over the rollers 15, as permitted by the springs 16, and there will be no tuming of the tool holder. As a result, there will be a turning of the tool holder in only one direction and consequently there will be presented different surface portions of the diamond to the work and the life of usefulness of the diamond will be prolonged.
It is believed that the practical advantages of my present form of device will be apparent to those who are familiar with the art to which this invention relates.
What I claim isi 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of an interiorly cylindrical housing having a central base portion, an oscillatable annular transfer ring co-axially arranged within said housing with respect to the longitudinal axis thereof, a tool holder rotatably and co-axially mounted within said ring and having a recess at the rear end thereof, means of one-way clutch connection between said transfer ring and said tool holder for effecting oneway rotary movement of said toolholder, a spring disk having frictional engagement between said central base portion of said housing and the recessed rear end of said tool holder for holding said tool holder in position to which adjusted, a cover ring surrounding and oscillatable about said housing, a removable handle extending radially outwardly from said cover ring for manipulation thereof and having an inward projection therethrough, the wall of said housing having an arcuate aperture through which said projection extends, and said transfer ring having a recess to receive the inner end of said projection for operative engagement therewith for manipulation of said one-way clutch means.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of an interiorly cylindrical housing having a central base portion, an oscillatable annular transfer ring co-axially arranged Within said housing with respect to the longitudinal axis thereof, a tool holder rotatably and co-axially mounted within said ring, means of one-way clutch con- I 4 nection between said transfer ring and said tool holder for effecting one-way rotary movement of said tool holder, a spring disk co-axially disposed with respect to the longitudinal axis and having frictional engagement between said central base portion of said housing and the rear end of said tool holder for holding said tool holder in position to which adjusted, and means for rotary manipulation of said transfer ring for operation of said clutch means.
