FIRE-PLACE GRATE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,813, dated August '7, 1883.

To all whom it may concern: Y

Be it known that I, STEWART IVATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barnesville, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Place Grates and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

B indicates the front grate, having the bottom 0 extending backward from its lower portion. The front grate maybe of ordinary form and construction.

D represents the back grate, which is cast with the top horizontal bar, 6, the bottom bar, 9, and the inclined bars h, extending downward and forward from the top bar, 6, and having the bends 7c and bottom offsets, Z, extending forward horizontally to the bottom bar, 9.

The top bar is formed with backwardly-projecting lugs 12, which serve as bearings to keep the top bar, 0, clear of the brick-wall backing sufficiently to provide for a rear draft, to prevent the bricks from burning. The bottom bar, 9, is also generally provided with lugs z,

which extend forward to engage the rear bar,

f, of the bottom 0 of the front grate, and

serve to keep the bars 9 and f separated. The bottom bar, 9, of the back grate is extended at its ends, to engage bearings of the side walls of the fire-place to support the back grate, as

indicated at s.

It is designed by means of this invention to dispense with fire-brick in the back wall of the fire-place,to widen the bottom of the grate toward the rear, and to provide a perfect draft through the rear portion of the coal-bed, as well asthrough its front portion. The draft of the chimney is improved and a brighter fire is provided.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

The cast-iron back grate consisting of the bottom bar, 9, extended at its ends to form bearings for the bottom grate, the top bar, 6, having backwardly-extending lugs, and the inclined back .bars, h, having forward extensions, Z, at their lower ends, substantially as specified.
