(ModeL) Y A. SAHLSTROM.
LAMP CHIMNEY CLEANER. No. 282,782. Patented Aug. '7, 1883.
INVENTOR MJM WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST SAHLSTROM, oF's'rooKnoL'M, WISCONSIN.
LAMP-CHIMNEY CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,782, dated August 7, 1883.
Application filed March 19,1883. (ModcL) piece of paper to be introduced into alampchimney for cleaning it.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whichsimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of my improved lamp-chimney cleaner. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View of the same on the line m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective View ofa modification of the plates to be held on the end of the stick. tudinal elevations of other modifications of the said plates. c
A stick, A, is provided at one end with two longitudinal slits or cuts crossing each other at right angles, and which extend the length of a tapered part, B, at the end ofthe stick. The eX- treme end 0 of the stick is made conical, as shown. Rectangularly-bent plates D, or plates bent in a similar manner, have their edges rounded or curved, as shown, and the said plates are placed in the above-mentioned slits in such a manner that they. project radially from the tapered part of the stick. After the plates D have been inserted a ring, E, is driven over the conical end 0 of the stick, and holds the ends of the stick together and the plates Figs. 4 and 5 show longi-- D in place. I have shown two angular plates,- D, in the stick, but one plate, or more than two plates, can be used. The curved edges of the plates D can be toothed, as shown in Fig. 3, or may be bent to have waved edges, as shown in Fig.4; or the teeth can be bent to be diagonal to the edge, as shown at a, Fig. 5. The handle part of the stick A can be ribbed trans versely, or may be left smooth. A rag or piece of cloth or paper is wrapped one or more times around the plates D, which are then introduced into the chimney, the inner surface of which is rubbed and cleaned by means of the said rag or paper.
If chimneys of small diameter, into which the plates D cannot be introduced, are to be cleaned," the rag or paper is'wrapped around the ridged part A of the handle, and the same is introduced into the chimney.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to use a wiper formed of flannel and buckskin 011 a wire frame, or of paper or flexible material wrapped about the stick and held by a thinlble, or of rubber strips secured to a holder of any suitable kind; but
WVhatI do claim as new and of my invention 1s The stick A, having the cross-slotted part B, with the conical top 0, in combination with the bent plates D and drive-ring E, as shown and described.
