Description

March 25, 1958 J. E. HOWARD 2,827,718
SHELF EDGE SIGN ASSEMBLY Filed June 15, 1956 INVENTOR. JAMES E HOWARD BY ATTORNEYS United States Patent D i SHELF EDGE SIGN ASSEMBLY James Edward Howard, North lvliami, Fla. .Applicationflune 15,,1956,.Serial No. 591,642v #Cla'ims. "(C1, 40-10) This invention relates to improved shel'fiedge sign assemblies which facilitateexhibit .of and changing of price cards and the like.
The .primary object of the inventionisio providemore practical and eflicient devices of this .kind which exhibit cards in a more readable manner, which are simple in construction, and are composed'iof .a small number .-of simple-and easily assembled parts, which are readily :separable for changing cards.
Another object of the invention is to provide devices of this kind which have card holders which are separably mounted on shelf edge mounted strips, and transparent covers which are separably mounted on the card holders for changing cards, the card holders and the covers being removable as units from the strips.
Another object of the invention is to provide shelf edge sign assemblies of the character indicated, which can be made in attractive, rugged, and serviceable forms at relatively low cost, are easily installed, and are highly satisfactory for the purpose intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a shelf edge sign assembly of the present invention, mounted on the forward edge a shelf;
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of the novel shelf edge sign assembly of Figures 1 and 2; and
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view, on a reduced scale, similar to Figure 2, showing a modified form of shelf edge sign assembly.
Referring to the drawings in detail, and first to Figures 1 to 3, indicated generally at is a shelf having an upper surface 12, and a forward edge 14. Secured on the edge 14 of the shelf is a shelf edge sign assembly, indicated generally at 16, of the present invention.
The shelf edge sign assembly 16 comprises an elongated channel-shaped mounting strip, indicated generally at 18, which extends along the shelf edge 14, and which includes a forwardly declining flat web 20 having upper and lower longitudinally extending arcuate convex beads 22 and 24 which are continuations of the web 20, as clearly shown in Figure 2, said beads terminating in rearwardly extending and rearwardly converging flat upper and lower flanges 26 and 28, respectively, terminating at their rear edges in coplanar vertical abutment flanges 30 and 32, respectively, which are engageable against the shelf edge 14. The web 20 of the strip 18 has in its forward side a longitudinally extending groove 34, see Figure 2, traversed by suitable fastening elements, such as wood screws 36 which are threaded into the shelf edge 14 between the abutment flanges 30 and 32.
Indicated generally at 38 is an elongated card carrier 2,827,718 Patented .Mar. 25 .1958
which .comprises .a iflat web. 40 -havin g. on. itsaupper. .and :lower edges rearwardly .extending resilient .arcuate concave clip.flanges .42 and-44 whichareremovably engageable over the upper and lower beads 22 and 24 of-the :mountingstrip ;18. .Indicatedtgenerally. at.56.is; a .card, of :any suitable maventory-gprocedures. The card .56 -.is positioned .on the forward side. of.the.,plate 49-,of the=cardfholder 4.8.
.Indicated ,generally at,60.is .a transparent cover :having .a ,fiatswebifi2 having on: its :upper .and loweredges .upper and-lower. hook ,flanges 6.4 :and 66 removably engageable over the edge portions 52 and '54, respectively, of the card holder 48 to hold the card 56 in place thereon.
The cover 60 can be readily removed for exchanging cards in the event the goods on the shelf 10 are changed, and the carrier 38 together with the card and the cover, can be removed as a unit, when desired, from the strip 18.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figure 4, the mounting strip 18' includes a fiat web 20 terminating at its upper and lower edges in convex beads 22' and 24', respectively, which continue as rearwardly converging upper and lower flanges 26 and 28', respectively, which terminate in coplanar, vertically spaced abutment flanges 30' and 32', respectively. The forward side of the web 20' has therein a longitudinally extending groove 34, traversed by suitable fastening elements 36, a in the form of Figures 1 to 3. The strip 18' of Figure 4 is susceptible of being produced by extrusion methods, for example, whereas the strip 18 of Figures 1 to 3 is of sheet material and is preferably formed by means of bending, for example.
Indicated generally at 56 is a card positioned on the forward surface of the web 20 of the strip 18'. Removably secured in overlying relationship to the card 56' is a transparent cover, indicated generally at 60, which comprises a transparent flat web 62' and arcuate concave longitudinally extending clip flanges 64 and 66' on the upper and lower edges thereof and engaged over the beads 22' and 24', respectively. The form of the invention of Figure 4 eliminates the card holder 38 of the form of the invention of Figures 1 through 3.
It will be noted that the upper flanges 26 and 26 of the clips 18 and 18are shorter than the lower flanges 28 and 28, so that the cards are displayed in highly readable rearwardly inclined positions.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
