Description

(No Model.)
J. R. HIGGINS.
CHIMNEY FLUE STOPPBR.
No. 282,726. Patented-Aug. '7, 1883.
PATENT JONATHAN R, HIGGINS, o r LIMA, oHIo.
CHlMNEY-FLUE STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,726, dated August '7, 1883.
. Application filed May 26, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J R. HIGGINS, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Flue Stoppers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to stoppers for the flues of chimneys, and it is an improvement upon my invention relating to the same, reference beinghad to Letters Patent of the United States No. 182,667, the same bearing date September 26, 187 6 5 and it consists in inserting a soot and dust arresting-cushion upon that portion of the stopper bearing upon the inner wall of the room in which it is applied.
The stopper being molded of plaster-ofparis in artistic design, my invention further consists in so constructing the stopper as to economize in'the amount of material required for the same. i
In the practical application of my former invention, hereinbefore referred to, I have found that one great objection to flue-stoppers heretofore in use is that they admit of the passage of soot and dust into the room where they are used. The object of my present improvement is to provide a flue-stopper that will avoid this objection.
Figure 1 is a cross-section of the stopper, represented in position in a broken section of a chimney. Fig. 2 is an. inside or bottom plan view of the stopper.
The same letters are used in referring to identical parts in the drawings.
The flue-stopperA is constructed, preferably, of plaster-ofparis. Centrallylocated in the same, a little beneath the outer surface, is the block a, of Wood or metal, within the body of the plaster, for the purpose of receiving the screw to, by means of which the porcelain or other ornamental knob a is attached to the stopper.
The cushion Bis formed of some suitable textile fabric or leather, the edges of which are for the purpose of reducing the amount of plaster required for the construction of the stopper, and consequently the cost of the same, I form them with the deep circular de-.
pression or cavity D.
In order to secure the attachment of this stopper to the chimney-flue E, I employ three springs, F, which are held in their position by means of the metallic insertions 6. These insertions e are substantially the same as employed in my Letters Patent. These springs are formed of steel or other suitable metal, the angles or curves in which are long or easy to avoid the danger of fracture, especially in construction. In practice I have found great difficulty in getting these springs made cheap enough to warrant the manufacture of the stoppers, and this form greatly facilitates the construction of the same. These springs are constructed so as to freely insert in and romove from the metallic insertions e of the stop per, which are molded in and cast into the stopper. A
A loosely-twisted textile substance, I), may be inserted between the cushion B and the stopper to render the cushion more certain to accomplish its object.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and useful in stoppers for chimney-flue stoppers, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is
1. The chimney-flue stopper A, provided with the soot and dust arresting cushion B, constructed and arranged as described.
2. In a stopper for chimney-flues, the cover or stopper A, provided with the soot and dust arresting cushion B, the\circular cavity D,
and the long-angled removable springs F, as
and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JONATHAN R. HIGGINS.
