PATENT OFFICE.
' HARRY J. VALENTINE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE COLUM- BIAN HARDWARE COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
FACE-PLATE FOR REGISTERS.
$PEGIFIGATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 748,669, dated January 5, 1904. Original application filed May 20. 1902, Serial No. 108,18. Divided and this application filed May 26, 1903- derial To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. VALENTINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Face-Plates for Registers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to face-plates for registers for hot-air furnaces or for ventilation; and the object of the same is to provide a face-plate for the purpose named which will be composed of sheet metal entirely and which will be strong and durable.
A further object of the invention is to render it possible to impart any desired ornamentation and so construct the same that the outer surface will be flush, or substantially flush, or level throughout.
A further object is to provide a face-plate which will .be light in weight as well as strong.
To these ends my invention consists of certain features of construction to be hereinafter described and then claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved face-plate, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Referring to the drawings, the frame of the face-plate a may be of any suitable form, and its sides are connected by means of bars b. The entire face-plate is preferably made of one piece of sheet metal, and the bars shown are made into the simplest form of grillwork or ornamental work of which the face-plate under this invention is susceptible.
In making the face-plate I first start with a plain sheet of metal in which slots are cut. The portions between these slots are then turned bodily edgewise relatively to the plane of the frame a, forming twists 0 adjacent the frame, so that the outer edges of, the bars I) will be flush or substantially flush with the supporting ends (1 of the bars and with the .outer surface of the frame. To state the case somewhat dilferently, the planes of the end portions 1 of the bars are located to one side of the axes of the bars, so that the outer edges (No model.)
of the bars are flush or substantially flush with the outer surface of the said ends. Not only is this a simple way to produce faceplates for registers, but it enables a variety of ornamentation to be produced and besides the twists formed at the ends of the bars produce an ornamental effect in themselves,
while at the same time the bars are strengthened against flexure in any direction.
This application is a division of my original application, filed May 20, 1902, Serial N 0. 108,148, as well as of a later application, filed July 12, 1902, Serial No. 115,371.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A face-plate for registers, the same comprising a sheet-metal frame, and bars connecting the sides of the frame, turned bodily edgewise relatively to the frame, the planes of the end portions of the bars being located to one side of the axes of the bars, and the outer edges of the bars being flush with the outer surface of the frame, substantially as described.
2. A face-plate for registers, the same comprising a flat sheet-metal frame, and transverse bars turned bodily edgewise relatively thereto, the planes of the end portions of the bars being located to one side of the axes of the bars, and the outer edges of the bars being flush with the outer surface of the frame, substantiallyas described.
3. A face-plate for registers, the same comprising a flat sheet-metal frame, and integral transverse bars turned bodily edgewise relatively thereto, the outer edges of the bars being substantially flush with the outer surface of the frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRY J. VALENTINE.
